Interesting considering all the talk lately is that dusty has been keen to stay and even extend his contract.
“ he is more open than ever” it’s a perfect sentence that says absolutely nothing

That video certainly made it sound like Dusty is very open to moving here. Maybe the whole narrative of him wanting to stay was how he felt before he knew Cotch and Riewoldt were retiring and he thought he might be able to compete in another finals series or two but now it's become obvious that the Tigers are going to be entering a rebuilding phase and he doesn't want to be a part of a bottom 4 team in the last years of his career. It's also possible that Richmond have privately told him that they are rebuilding and would potentially be open to trading him while he has some market value? I don't think we'd do a straight swap of pick 4 for Dusty but I wouldn't be surprised if we traded that pick for Dusty + something else like an early second rounder or another player Dimma has a good relationship with.

Anyway. If it wasn't already confirmed, I think that video puts it beyond a shadow of a doubt that our next head coach will be Damien Hardwick.

I'm sure he is. His close mates have all retired, the coach for most of his career has moved, etc.

But for a guy for whom loyalty has always been a big deal, the choice between spending his entire career at one club or moving for the last 1 or 2 years will most likely go with staying with the club that has supported him through some tough times.

Good time to move for Dusty, all his mates are retiring, surely hes not gonna be having beers with Nank the Tank at kittens?

I almost choked on my dinner when you mentioned pick 4, even as part of a trade.

We should be pushing the Sam Mitchell type pick in the 50’s, he is just as likely to hang up the boots as he is to play 2 more years

Look. If I was running the club I certainly wouldn't be trading pick 4 for Dusty but this club has done some unexpected things in the past like trading pick 2 for Weller so I can't 100% rule it out unfortunately. A 32 year old Dusty clearly isn't worth pick 4 but a rebuilding Richmond side will be looking to get as much as they possibly can from that potential trade and would be eyeing off pick 4. We virtually have no use for pick 4 anyway with Walter's bid guaranteed to come in the first 2 selections so why not try to flip it for Dusty and something else we can use? Maybe we could convince them to give us their 2024 first rounder because it looks like we're going to need it with Lombard looking like a probable top 10 pick next year.

Back on topic. Are we expecting the Hardwick announcement on Monday morning?

100% agree, We have been spoilt with first round picks over the years and it seems to of numbed us to their actual value. I can tell you that not one other club would entertain pick 4 for Dusty as part of a deal that didn’t include another gun player, not one, and as such it should tell us any such deal would be a repeat of the idiocy of Bowes and 7 or 2 for Weller as you have mentioned

I would say to anyone contemplating any such deal Haven’t we been a laughing stock enough and secondly I have a bridge I would like to sell you

Fair enough. I'm not necessarily suggesting I want to do it, just that it may be what our recruiters are contemplating. Either way, I think we're trading pick 4 because it really has no value to us this year. IF we can convince a genuine superstar to request a trade to us then I'd part with pick 4 but it just seems so unlikely in my mind that I'm thinking about other ways to use it. There's always the option to trade up and get ahead of the Walter bid.

It’s a crap shoot

I think a better option is we spilt pick 4 and go after the dogs 2X first rounders then use 1 for points and the other to get Liam Henry ( or similar) from Freo

Of course this assumes a quality player want to come, get out there and start earning your money Dimma

I'd be in favour of that as well. Liam Henry would be a great addition and potentially plugs a hole in our list. Could the same mechanism be used to secure Dusty? Wouldn't surprise me even if people don't agree with him being worth a late first rounder. One thing is for sure and that is we're definitely trading pick 4. Like you suggested, this is where Dimma needs to step up and make some phone calls over the next few weeks to ensure we get maximum return for pick 4.

Firstly, I really doubt Dusty will go anywhere, but regardless...

I doubt we'll be going into the draft with pick 4. We'll trade it out for points, with maybe a player or two in the mix. I suppose in theory Dusty could be part of that.

What value he has though will have a LOT to do with how much of his salary Richmond will be paying. We gave away pick 7 to dump Bowes salary, and Dusty would be carrying a LOT more than that. If Richmond were to pay as much of his salary as the AFL allows, then in theory I suppose pick 4 would be in the mix....I can't see it happening though. If nothing else, we really need those points....So I suppose the question would be how much of his salary would we be able to cover?

Dusty is an absolute superstar who worships the ground dimma walks on, having someone like that will improve standards in the club and set the example of buy in. I don't want to become richmond 2.0, I think there's a chance players resent that but having dusty for a couple of years in the forward line lacing out our key fwds would be nice. A player like that just makes you want to be better and makes you walk taller. The trouble is, is our window in 2 years? The club must believe it is to sack Dew when they did by not making finals this year. I'm not sure. I still hold concern over Sam Collins, Dave Swallow, Brandon Ellis, Nick Holman and I see the criticism of Pendels atm and I think if any of those journos cared enough for this club the same questions would be asked of the senior leaders at our club. If I put my tin hat on, I think the reason the afl media don't ask questions of these guys is because they are quite happy to watch us suffer down the bottom.

We wouldn't be getting peak 2017 dusty but I agree that he would make others around him so much better. He doesn't actually tackle but the pressure he puts a defence under just from his presence is huge. Would be massive for Humphrey who aspires to be that similar player and takes the best defender away from those guys. We are forever critical of our delivery into the forward 50 and he's just about the best in the comp at that.

IF Dusty wants to come, you make it happen. IMO him in this side single-handedly wins us at least 2 more games this season.

The Gary Ablett trade is probably the closest precedence we have for a trade like this? So pick 19-ish? Splitting our pick with the Bulldogs gets us there, which I would be reluctantly comfortable paying.

In saying that though, I don’t really get why Dusty would want to make the move at this stage, and if anyone is going to know what he is thinking, it’s certainly not Mitch Cleary lol.
