Yep. Toovey and Goldsack should definitely be the O'Bree and Lockyer of 2016.
If they're not it's an indictment on our youth really.

Guys like Broomhead Marsh Aish Ramsay Oxley have all been in the system a few years now and need to step up.
Yeah this is the thing. We shouldn't need them. Either of them. I'd say our defence is actually the one area of the ground where we have some pretty damn good depth. Marsh, Ramsay, Sinclair, Willams, Langdon, Frost, Reid, Brown, Toovey, Goldsack, Maynard, Oxley plsu what will most likely be cameos from Pendlebury/Sidebottom etc and seriously, there is no reason why Toovey and Goldsack should be able to get games.

You can add Scharenberg to the list if he wasn't injured too.

Sorry to get on one of my hobby horses but I really hate this line of thinking. O'Bree and Tarks both entered 2010 season in their 30's. Toovs and Goldy are 28 still just in their prime footy time.

Now I dont have any problem if the younger players overtake them and they play VFL. I do have a problem with the idea 2 proven premiership players are designated as being a slight on the team if they get games

Its a truth in footy that sometimes younger better players come onto lists ans dislodge older players. It's also a truth that established players can have form fluctuations over seasons and they can be a likely to reach new levels as not recover old form when 28yo. Sometimes a player, especially a solid team player not a star, a player like Toovey, can lose a bit of confidence and belief for a while especially in the seasons following a major injury. Sometimes its terminal, sometimes they improve.

Tarks is a good example. Career best form in 2003 when he did an ACL. Came back but struggled for a while. It was around 2007 or 8, when he was in his later 20's that he had a blinder of a season, was spoken about for AA and if he didnt make the squad he came very close. Toovs could be that guy in 2016. He doesn't have to be but we should give him a chance before writing his epithath.

My view is not all the youngsters will realise the potential we see in them and not all the older players are on a downward spiral. Don't anticipate outcomes, sit back and let the younger and older players go at it and selcet the 22 on form alone.

Gone Critical. Remember this is your opinion only and not fact. You often write things like this and it sounds like you are dismissing everyone elses opinion. For what its worth my opinion is that toovey still has a few good years left in him....as a lockdown backman he has been one of our best for the past 8 years. Goldsack has never convinced me he is genuine AFL quality.....he seems to have some alright attributes but no serious weapons. But thats just my opinion

I must admit that as much as I am looking forward to this season, I am feeling very nervous.

Looks like we have traded well, Reid is fit, fixture not too bad and if we can improve at least 20% more on last year, we should play finals. However having followed the Pies for a very, very, very long time don't want to get my hopes up too much. In fact am not even bragging to my friends who follow opposition teams.

Just want to get through the season without any serious injuries, a game plan for winning and defending, to see what we can achieve with a view to bringing in more flags.

Fair enough. For what its worth I agree this is only my opinion and I dont want to present it as any more than that. I just don't go with the view that its not possible that Toovs or Goldy or Blair may have very good seasons in 2016 and still keep some of the younger players out.

I reckon these stories are bullshit most of the time. He probably got shitfaced watching the superbowl and tripped over a coffee table.
If Balme said it was his dog, it very likely wasn't his dog. You throw the frisbee. The dog catches it, returns it. Repeat. Where is the conflict point? Maybe he tried to take a hanger on his dog?

I agree and I thought this was how it was supposed to work - its the competition for spots week in week out that will set the tempo for how each individual responds to the exacting requirements of an elite team environment. Over the last couple of years we have blooded a few kids each season to give them a taste and hopefully inspire them to step up even higher the following season. Players form and injury will be a week to week assessment along with who we and where we are playing and the coaching staff now have a talented and more experienced pool to work with and get the best out of. If Tooves and Goldsack are playing, they will have earned their spot in front of some pretty exciting talent coming through.

God knows. Broke it playing backyard cricket? Run over by a car? There's a million ways but getting your finger stuck in the ground throwing a frisbee to a dog sounds far fetched.

So why make up an Stupid Excuse?

To me it actually sound so dumb that you couldn't make it up! Surely if they were covering it up they'd come up with a better story than this lol.

Toovey and Goldsack might be slight younger, however Goldsack has chronic knee problems that is hampering him and Toovey permanently lost something after his knee reco... Both their positions are ripe for the taking, and should be taken, assuming our young defenders continue to improve

SEN reporting that Jeremy Howe played a T20 game last Tuesday.. Interesting when he has a hot spot in the foot.. Also he bats up the order and in the chase he was listed at 10 and did not bat.. Broken finger playing frisbee or broken finger on the cricket field... hmmmm....
