Collingwood and Richmond - who has the greater supporter base

Just a reminder: Terms like “Minnowmond”, “Shrinkingwood”, “Dwindlewood” and the like belong on the bay, not the main board. Same goes for referring to either team as a minnow, when clearly neither fits that description.

Richmond seem to have more true supporters but Collingwood, have plenty of bandwagoners. Listening to their home crowd on Friday night, it seemed that few there understood the rules of the game. They just booed everything, right, wrong and indifferent. Probably just the place to be seen on a Fri night in Melbourne. They are the Man U of the AFL.

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I barely ever saw anyone local or at school in a Collingwood jumper. I remember because I thought it was unusual when I’d see a Pies fan, like a Footscray fan. It was always Richmond/Hawks/Essendon.

These days all I see is Collingwood. Like a disease, they’re everywhere

Im curious where you grew up. In my primary school Pies were the most supported team followed by Carlton and Essendon.

In my primary school the most popular clubs were bulldogs, Geelong and collingwood in the 80’s to early 90’s.

In high school it was either Essendon or Collingwood and that was in the mid to late 90’s. Then you had a few Geelong and Bulldogs fans. One thing was That there wasn’t many Richmond fans.

Some of this has to be geographical though, i went to school in the northern burbs. The Tigers and Bulldogs basically didnt exist.

Not surprising in the mid to late 90's. Growing up in the 70's and 80's it was all Richmond, pies, and Carlton .

Different years, areas, schools, etc will see teams fluctuate in support unless rusted on from family.
Footy day dress up at my kids school in northern suburbs "break up for school holidays" In one of my kids classes 14 of 22 being in Richmond colours.
Over 800 kids, walking around mostly saw pies, tiges, bombers and blues and some hawks. No doubt different areas will see different levels of support.

growing up in the south eastern suburbs, i will admit that there was a very niche following of richmond supprters but you knew who they were where as the collingwood supporters there was a few people who knew what football was but also this following of other collingwood supporters who didnt know a thing about football at all. some grew up to learn and love the game while others still only come out of the woodwork when it seem convenient.

but somehow richmond supporters were always labelled the bandwagoner?!

My school in the northern suburbs had as many Tigers as Pie fans.

I think it’s the 4 peat thing that gets Pies fans onboard and they have not experienced the lows of Richmond so get more bandwagonners.

Even their QF with Pendles 300th was only 1k more.

Which begs the question are Pies a minnow club or is Pendles that boring a player? I think it’s both.
Tigers are clearly unmatched as bandwagon fans who only come out when the going is good.

32K and 38K to MCG home games in R9 and R10.

Can they get back to sub 20K home crowds if they are shite again in 2025?

Pies are massive. Tiges are massive. Are they more massive than the Pies? Probably not. They’re both magnificent clubs, with phenomenal supporter bases that make going to our games really great fun.

Do you seriously think when I’m sitting at the G and there’s 80 or 90k predominantly Tiger ferals going feral as we’re taking down a meek Giants or a powerful Cats, or celebrating Cotch, Shedda, Jack or Dusty’s respective 300th, or securing our third flag in almost as many years, that I’m contemplating “oh but Collingwood might have a few more supporters”? Not a chance, it’s irrelevant.

Why set yourselves up to have your team demeaned by comparing them to other juggernauts?

Seriously, getting caught up in this rubbish would be like dwelling negatively on the fact that you’re dating Charlize Theron just because Margo Robbie exists.

Theron is better than Margo

We are 17th.. and got 92,000 to a Saturday twilight fixture. How many people turned up to Sidebottom's 300th game?

Couldnt even tell you when Sidey's 300th was, Pie fans dont need a special occassion to rock up.

Tigers are unrivalled in terms of bandwagon fair weather fans.

Hilarious that Richmond fans are using this as an example of them not being bandwagoners. They couldn't get more than 33k when they played Freo or 40k when they played the dogs at the MCG a few weeks ago and somehow all of them glory hunting Dusty's 300th is an example of them not jumping on the bandwagon.

It is often the case that funerals draw big crowds. Can't begrudge the tiges fans wanting to have one final celebration in memory of what used to be. They've got a horrid future ahead.

Funny thing is most think that of the pies as it wont be long before the pies bandwagon brigade drop off like flies and return to these type crowds> 2022 mind you was a Prelim year lol. Might even go back to 20K like in 2016 on Friday night footy V Freo :tearsofjoy:
2022 V Crows 36K (G)
25K v Eagles (Marvel)
28K V Suns (G)
30K V GWS (G)

What's pies excuse then in 2022 with your sub 30 crowds, short memory it seems.

How about this dozy lol lol lol

Yeah the way you treat your ex players Treloar, Grundy your bandwagoners wouldn't turn up for any milestone. So that's a mute point. Dont include pendles 300 which was a final

Richmond as the home team has the biggest and 3rd biggest non-public holiday crowds ever. I dont see Collingwood here ohh thats right you need anzac day or a public holiday to hit 90K

Rd 14 2024 = Richmond vs Hawthorn (92,311)
Rd 20 2000 = Carlton vs Essendon (91,571)
Rd 1 2018 = Richmond vs Carlton (90,151)
