Because nice guys come last. To survive in this caper, McRae needs to be ruthless and I think he is. Clearly he didn't like what the delisted players brought.

I realise he is only part of the decision making process of who gets delisted and who comes to the club, but I'd imagine his voice would carry a fair bit of weight in the conversation. The Brown name is like Collingwood royalty but it counted for naught this week - not that I am opposed to the decision that was made I might add.
If Eddie was still prez, he would have insisted we keep the Brown Bros on the list because their dad is Collingwood royalty.
Their delisting is a clear signal that TANSTAAFL. They've had enough time to show something and haven't.
The Daicos Bros, on the other hand, will end up Collingwood royalty like their dad.

Regarding mcstay. He’s a KPP that can play back, forward or Ruck. He’s been regular 22 in a top 4 team and it’s one of the best lists in the comp. You are kidding yourself if you think he’s worth 450k.

So let’s say he’s valued at 500-550k. And we’ve offered there abouts. You have to also factor in he’s costing us nothing in a trade. That’s worth $ in itself.

Look at other reported deals, Taranto at 750k for 7, then factor in they ALSO pay their first rounder. What’s the actual value of that then?

Adel are reportedly offering 800k for a small forward, who ginni has bettered in scoring. Then factor in Gold Coast ALSO want 2 firsts. What’s the actual value of that then?

Im coming around to the deal.

For all those that don’t want McStay, how else do we improve CHF position? McKay? Sure. Good luck.

I think the problem people have (including me at the moment) is whether he will actually improve us at the CHF position.

Out of all of the talls at the Lions over the past half-decade McStay has always been the one running under the narrative of never having been able to put it all together, despite his physical attributes and application on the training track (or at least in the weight room) being elite.

A contract for $600k+ per year over 5 years is a lot to commit to someone who sits in that basket imo.

Who knows, he could pan out to be the dependable 30-40 goal rock we've been in dire need of at CHF since Trav departed, but there's a lot of risk here in this and it could go the other way quite easily.

I agree - I see him as a very good fit for our game style - very versatile - he is mobile / quick for a big man, is a strong tackler / pressure acts, can take a good grab and kick goals - but almost the most exciting aspect is his field kicking into forward fifty which is excellent. Having a link up mark b/w defence and attack who can deliver effectively inside fifty is worth goals to other forwards - he rarely wastes it!......I think this is a really good signing (assuming it gets done). Looking forward to seeing him in action in the team!

And try to evade a tackler or even dish out a handball every now and then instead of sitting down in their lap trying to draw a free every time.

Kid has talent and goal sense, doesn't need to keep going back to that particular club in his bag quite so often, although I wouldn't remove it altogether as it's still a good weapon late in a quarter and especially in a late game scramble inside our F50 when tacklers tend to get a bit more sloppy with their technique due to fatigue.

IN: Fiorini and Frampton, Hayes and Hill, McStay and Mitchell ... sounds like a children's book that explores pairs.

OUT: Brown, Brown, Chugg, Grundy, Henry, McMahon, Madgen, Poulter and one more player?
Would rather see Kelly go than The Madge. Can't conceive of life without him! Won't need to offload another player though, as we can "up-rookie" one as part of our mandated three 'ins', according to AFL list rules.

We've basically been playing without a CHF. I recon we would have to be the worst team for giving up marks around our defensive forward flanks and often that's been no option, or Cox not being consistent. He's like a Cloke type, with poorer marking but better kicking.

Brissie board ain’t fussed about losing him but seems to be universally well regarded as a person and professional. Hopefully we can get the best out of him as he has the physical attributes we need

The concern about McStay is not that it doesn't make sense to get him, it's that it follows the pattern of prioritizing perceived playing list needs without considering how we are robbing Peter to pay Paul. It's not like our salary cap issues just materialize out of thin air.

We thought Grundy was an indispensable part of our list and we got our pants pulled down because of it.

We thought Mayne would be a handy addition to the team. He ultimately was. But we were so oddly determined to get him that we paid too much. McStay smells of this.

I'm not convinced that we've learned our lesson that even if we want a player, we need to walk away when the asking price seems out of proportion to their actual worth.

That could be it. We only need to take 2 picks. I hope I am wrong but we may go a 3rd pick in the draft instead of Mitchell.

Surely Leppa would have a solid understanding what we would be bringing in with Dan.

If he can ply his trade and help us get an extra 10% out of the others around him, it seems like a good fit.

He would also be another desperately needed outlet mark for kick ins.
Something Grundy was only so-so at.

I think Team Fly have a collective strategy of what they want to bring in and what they are happy to move on from, from what we have seen this year I am happy to see what can be done this and next trade periods.
