From the Port Board:

"Can confirm today, that from a source Collingwood are right in the hunt for Essendon Restricted Free Agent Darcy Parish. Pies are looking to top up on mature ages while they can develop younger types. Pies have also had conversations with Ben McKays management."

McKay’s not had a great season and the points made about his availability over the years are valid.

However if we are keen, I could see North not going into a bidding war and letting him walk for a compo pick. In that sense he may be a target that is gettable for us.

That's straight from the Twitter account PieSource, which seems to me to be a highly speculative account that pretends to be 'in the know'.

I'd love an explanation about what this means: Pies are looking to top up on mature ages while they can develop younger types.

Is Ben McKay any good or is it that his brother is and he looks exactly like him?:straining:

Call it the De Koning effect.

Seems self explanatory to me? Not so good to a fringe younger player though, you’re going to have to prove it in the VFL and make the most of injuries and suspensions in seniors when they happen… no “fifty senior games then see what you’ve got”!

I don’t think anyone on here can give you an accurate assessment of his game because of injury and sheer weight of ineptitude at that club for the past 5 years. At his best (v us last year) he’s just shy of elite, but that’s as rare as a Carlton finals appearance. Value wise if he gets his body right it’s a cheaper play than HH with a potentially similar output.

There was talk in media last year that Ben McKay was on the way to being the best contested mark and best key defender in the game.

That talk has died down this year.

so the "while they can develop younger types" clause applies to clubs who are developing their younger types in the VFL, but wouldn't apply to clubs who are developing their younger players in the AFL. Or is it a meaningless clause that applies to every club?

I would take it to mean that we have younger types we like, they are not high-draft-capital, ready-to-go players like Daicos, they’re going to need some time to see if they pan out. Which is true; we have essentially no top-15 selections outside of the current best 22 and this is not necessarily the case at every club.

Meanwhile, we feel we can improve our best 22 with mature players acquired through FA etc.

He looked like Glenn Jakovich and Chris Langford combined against the Pies at the G last year but that is not a level he has maintained for extended periods

I think they were up against Schache in the ruck. Their involvement after the ruck contest is really good to see, but I wouldn't take too much from the hitouts - not reflective of how they go against proper rucks.
No, but it was good they were going against someone closer to their age bracket rather than being smashed by a 30 year old.

PIES TO TARGET 'ONE OR TWO'

COLLINGWOOD will take a targeted approach to this year's Trade Period, with the club not expecting to be as prolific as last off-season when the Pies brought in four new recruits.

Speaking to AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable this week, Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine said the club would continue creating a balance within its list and would adopt a needs-based approach to its targets.

It follows a similar model to last October when the Pies looked to fill specific positional requirements in defence (Billy Frampton), attack (Dan McStay and Bobby Hill) and midfield (Tom Mitchell).
The club also brought through multiple top-30 selections at the draft in Ed Allan (pick No.19) and Jakob Ryan (pick No.28), with the Pies keen to continue blending youth with mature additions.

"I wouldn't envisage four players, no. We were targeted last year, we'll be just as targeted this year. But it wouldn't be the quantum of four players, I wouldn't have thought. Maybe one or two," Hine told Gettable.

"We're just mindful of the Ed Allans and the Jakob Ryans of the world. We want to create the opportunity for them, but also continue to create some balance within the list in terms of our mature-age players.

"Obviously, Scott (Pendlebury) is closer to the end and Steele (Sidebottom) is closer to the end. It's just about being able to address all of those areas."

I think you're giving it too much credit. The blog is trying to paraphrase this from Dekka's public interview yesterday and pretending it's from a secret source : "We're just mindful of the Ed Allans and the Jakob Ryans of the world. We want to create the opportunity for them, but also continue to create some balance within the list in terms of our mature-age players." Dekka was suggesting adding mature agers was something that can inhibit the development of youngsters by not allowing them enough senior opportunities. The blogger was trying to suggest they complemented each other.

Apparently not into PARISH as he ready bto sign extension with the Bombers we are saving our crackers for a bigger fish or two

Well, there’s worse things you can do than give too much credit. Boo hoo… sobs uncontrollably

This may be from some dodgy twitter account.

Scout on Extreme Black N White mentioned earlier this year that we're interested in Parish but nothing serious at that point in time.

Whether interested means - if he's keen and available vs we're calling his manager fortnightly 🤷🏼‍♂️
