Not buying that one.

GWS were never in the hunt. Pickering and Sydney were in talks the week after the Hawks lost the GF to them.
He was.

As for GWS,

(There's more if you Google it).

Logan McDonald's (OOC 2024) name has popped up as speculation in the Draft, Trading, Free Agency thread, we should be having a massive crack if there is any chance he may consider getting out of Sydney.
Can't imagine they'll let him go with Buddy on his last year.

Bailey Williams from the Dogs is RFA, 25 years old and getting better numbers than anyone else I've heard us linked to, be a jet out of that backline with our gameplan and free up the chosen one to move to midfield permanently.

Markov is already doing that role and no thanks to another HBF, we also have Ryan

J Daicos 2029
Moore 2028
De Goey 2027
McStay 2027
Crisp 2026
Allan 2026
Mitchell 2025
Mihocek 2025
Elliott 2025
N Daicos 2025
Quaynor 2025
Maynard 2025
Cameron 2025
Frampton 2025
Noble 2025
Hill 2025
Adams 2024
Lipinski 2024
Hoskin-Elliott 2024
Murphy 2024
Ginnivan 2024
Kreuger 2024
McInnes 2024
McCreery 2024
Macrea 2024
Ryan 2024
Richards 2024
Pendlebury 2024
Sidebottom 2024
Howe 2024
Dean 2024 A Rookie

Cox 2023
Harrison 2023
Draper 2023
Ruscoe 2023
Bianco 2023
Kelly 2023
Markov 2023 A Rookie
Steene 2023 A Rookie
Carmichael 2023 A Rookie
Johnson 2023 A Rookie
Begg 2023 A Rookie
Murley 2023 A Rookie
Wilson 2023 B Rookie
So none this year (2023) we have to really worry about, mostly VFL players in development. Cox & Markov not going anywhere. Johnson a wait and see. A couple of the others probably delist. Majority would stay, I'd imagine.

Will give you the Ablett one.

As for GWS?

Pickering was in talks with Sydney by January. Sydney was always Buddy’s first preference. GWS was only the fallback if he couldn’t get to the Swans. That’s straight from Pickering mouth.

I don't know why the SSP window is a window, rather than being all year round? Let clubs fill their list spots that way, whenever they want to.

I think you might find that it's because the SSP screws over (state) feeder leagues enough as it is, without it being a season-long thing.

Any talk about "compensation" for poaching players later on in the season who have been making an impact wouldn't be worth diddily squat to state league clubs in the midst of their own (thus far competitive / successful) seasons and who, let's not forget, also have their own fan base and sponsors to keep happy.

We really would be looking at season-derailing stuff for some of the affected state league clubs if the AFL could poach players at any point during the season and the AFL would want to avoid that at all costs.

Maybe not this year, but if he’s open to a move in 2024 we should be in his ear.

You have taught me something. It's interesting to think how GWS would be if they acquired Buddy. Maybe more relevant, possibly with a premiership and if all went well, a famous sporting moment.

Nah, the swans saved them from themselves, albeit temporarily. Could you imagine how badly their cap would have exploded with him on the books? Even without him there they’ve blown it up several times.

Good point. Probably have lost one or more of Whitfield, Coniglio, Greene, etc - their lot of stars who are achieving success.

I think adding a back flanker is pretty likely. Nick wont play it next year. I'll be surprised if Bianco and Ruscoe are still with us - it'll be a need, particularly the way we want to move the ball.

I heard Chris Grant on sen today say the Dogs have 18 players out of contract at the end of the year...!

We'd only have a couple wouldn't we?
Year to year clubs have roughly 40% of their playing list off contract so 18 right now is not unusual, but across the league it’s probably on the higher side. For instance we had 29 coming off contract last year from memory.

Their list is at an unusual stage where they have the talent to compete, but a number guys on the fringe with senior experience that could be done in Crozier, McLean, Bruce, Garcia, Hannan and Khamis. Bevo’s revolving door selection policy has left them with about 35 guys they can pick with senior exposure the last 10 are just a bit thin.

GEELONG youngster Max Holmes has become a target for rival clubs after his fantastic start to the year, despite the impressive midfielder still being contracted at the Cats for next season.
Would be great for us, poor guy just misses his family and it’s a pretty long trip down to Geelong. You’d think a second round pick would be enough

I posted on the 19th of May about Max Holmes as I had heard from a connected cats vfl man.

He’s under contract so might not be this year but next.
