Unlike other years I don’t see too many obvious past-the-post he won’t be here next year retirements and delistings that can be confidently predicted. They will obviously happen as they do every year but almost every player on the list has an argument to stay on. With a lot of youth needing time/ injury luck, and with most of our over 30,s player delivering high quality football, combined with very few passengers/ dead wood in the mid 20,s age bracket… the turnover will be a difficult decision. Especially so if afl and vfl teams keep playing as well as they have started the seasons.

Yup agree with this.
Need to make 3 minimum.

Whether that is delist\re-rookie etc, time will tell.

But i can't see us making any calls before trade week as that will dilute the value of our picks if we can't use them!
So i expect not much news (apart from any retirements) until after trade week is done......seems the way of the new regime is to give nothing away (which is great!).
Think some players will be on a 'wait and see' list to see how that week pans out.

Plenty of water to go under the bridge between now and then!

Thankyou..I know solid cheap option who just needs a chance.

Can't understand how ppl can't see this

They won’t see it until even Hellen Keller would notice it

But the Dunn, Crisp, Roughead, Lipinkski, Kreuger etc etc ‘struggling to establish themselves player’ pick ups… are the canny low expenditure pick ups clubs need to nail

Imagine if the pies had of taken young Allir Allir when you first suggested? 🤷‍♂️

Yep....ppl need open their minds and eyes...

pablo disco bar you’re right

Khamis for Footscray looks good in the VFL… great leap, good speed, sharp kick

Better than a few of the mid sized defender options we have currently

I think we have to sit tight and watch some of the season unfold before assessing trade targets.

Khamis is that in between height sort of third tall type that we have in Howe and Maynard with Ruscoe also capable. Also talk of Henry or Johnson being able to play that role although I consider them both forwards.

We need to replace Howe in future years, Maynard may go into the midfield which makes him more attractive, particularly if Ruscoe doesn’t come on.

However, if Maynard stays back and Ruscoe develops then there may not be a need.

I reckon we’ll know more by mid year.

I'm very surprised that Tom Highmore can't make the Saints best 22 atm. He's out of contract and we were keen the year he was drafted. He's way too good for VFL. He'd be a perfect intercept third tall for us and is big enough to provide key defensive cover in a pinch. Also fits in that mid 20s age braket we need to bolster. I'd be watching that closely if I were the Pies recruiters.

Khamis, highmore etc…

Better prospects out there than Murphy or Wilson down back.

Liked ruscoe down back last year… but don’t want to put all our eggs in that basket

The quality of depth in defence (and up front) is an issue at Collingwood…

Teams like hawthorn that have Hartigan, Callow, Kosi as VFL depth… are clearly drafting 190cm + players better than we are

IMO we need an elite (A grade) big game player, inside mid with a big body. Taranto fits this mould.

History says you need a top 5 pick to get these sorts of guys.
If we were contending now then I'd agree, he's unlikely to be at his best when we're contending for a premiership and for us to win a premiership we'll need at least one highly rated KPF - and KPFs are significantly harder to get than an A grade mid.

I really like the thought of Highmore. From what I’ve seen a little better at intercept than Khamis or at least we’ve seen more of it at AFL level.

Battle going back may have squeezed him out but that’s the type of trade we should be looking at if we need to replace Howe and upgrade on Murphy, Ruscoe etc

I'm not sure that having half a dozen mediocre kpfs is such a great thing.

It's yet to be seen if they're mediocre. At least the Hawks are making an effort to develop key forwards. It's better than having none like we currently do. We have Kelly and McMahon back. Begg in the ruck. Wilson as a third tall forward. Our list profile for key forwards is desperate.

I still think ash Johnson is the perfect intercept defender

Mitchell has had a cracking fortnight and Gunston is probably still very good but nearing the end - they're the two that mean they're in a good position right now. Also having a swag of vfl standard kpfs is a bit irrelevant, but yes maybe they'll come through which puts them in a better position than us regarding kpfs. Not sure if I'd want 6 on the list who can't ruck though.

Better too many than too few.

Hopefully… but Johnson’s yet to feature there, then there’s only Ruscoe developing as a mid sized defender… then the known and insufficient quantity that is Murphy, Wilson, Madgen (slightly bigger)

So they either have to pluck a ready to go young state league defender like Highmore out of the MSD

Or target an out of contract defender at another club at years end

But something needs to be done about the poor defensive depth once our 1st defenders are out and Howe and Roughead need replacements at some point

Is the issue not so much that we don’t have developing KPF’s, it’s that you don’t like or rate those we have relative to Hawthorns? Genuine question. I’d have thought Johnson, Begg, McMahon, and Kelly is a solid group of developing KPF’s.
