Another two busts in the first round from Hine (Macrae and Henry) and Wright is looking like Ned Guy 2.0 more every day (Richmond gets both Taranto and Hopper?), Hawthorn knew he was past it.
Using 2 year performance to write off first round draft picks, makes virtually every club recruiter look useless.
Bit it’s your absurd criteria that’s flawed.

You want Grundy as a effectively a straight swap for Logue?

I haven't really thought through the particulars but a quality best 22 key defender gets me excited. I rate Logue very highly, the bloke never loses a contest. He'd be a great foil for Moore and goes alright when he switches forward.

I wonder if some Adelaide supporters were as cocksure that losing Gunston was no big deal.

If we can extend ourselves contractually to give a 30yo Elliott a 3 year deal we can afford to do the same for a talented 20yo forward in Henry.

I can quite easily see us regretting losing him season on season for the next 10 years and for what? 100K extra now x 2 seasons?

Not worth taking that risk when the savings to pay for it could be easily obtained by removing both Brown brothers (as one example) and replacing them with a couple of national draft selections on minimum chips.
They weren't that bad off really. Adelaide turned the Gunston pick (24) into Jenkins and Kerridge, who were both serviceable players. Surprisingly, despite playing well in one of the greatest sides in the modern era, Gunston has only had one AA selection (2018) and his one B and F win was when they finished 15th.

Ruckmen are crash-and-bash work horses. They should NEVER be the highest paid players. It ought to be a Golden Rule of list management. We choked.

The elite money should be reserved only for match-winning key forwards and Brownlow-worthy midfielders. No exceptions.

Except unlike other Ruckman Grundy gets taps and midfielder stats.
Two for one.

Are the salary cap pressures actually real or the club leaking that we have cap issues to soften the blow to resign players.
Sorry Ollie, we’d love to give you $x but unfortunately due to our cap issues we can only offer you $y.
The players as a collective group are not going to openly discuss with each other every fine detail and keep their own spreadsheet.

Unders for Grundy.
On that basis Freo should take Grundy instead of Jackson.
And GW would get smashed for the deal.

I’ll be enjoying the Richmond train wreck coming around the corner.
It will be interesting to see how they go without match winner Martin and criminally underrated mids in Edwards and Lambert. Combined with a rapidly declining Cotchin and regularly injured Prestia, that's basically their entire premiership midfield gone.

You can go back further with Hine and his record is pretty poor overall. Mid season draft his strike rate is good on slightly older players - Noble, Johnson.

That is on Hine and Ned Guy. Not blaming GW for that.

Looks like we are into Fiorini

Please let this be true.
Clearance and contested beast at VFL level.

Think of him as a younger Taylor Adams.
Yes there are some kicking issues but he could be a real asset.

Collingwood has expressed interest in Gold Coast midfielder Brayden Fiorini as a cut-price recruit who could bolster its midfield without breaking the bank like Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell.
The Pies have missed out on GWS midfielder Tim Taranto, who is set to join Richmond on a seven-year deal but are still keen to continue adding to an exciting midfield with a blend of youth and experience.

Fiorini has a lucrative contract through to the end of the 2023 season that is believed to be worth more than $500,000 in its last year.

The Pies interest is preliminary but any club that secured him might be able to broker a new deal in the same manner of Gold Coast cast-offs Peter Wright and Will Brodie.

Brodie’s $600,000 wage was converted into a two-year deal at about half that rate in a fresh start at Fremantle that helped the Dockers cash in with a favourite pick swap and revitalised his career.

Brayden Fiorini's VFL stats in 2022

Disposals: 36.1
Inside-50: 6.3
Contested possessions: 16
Marks: 4.1
Ground ball gets: 9.9
Intercepts: 3.1
Clearances: 9
Score involvements: 9.4
Tackles: 7.7
Ranking points: 162

The Suns were not shattered to lose midfielder Hugh Greenwood to North Melbourne because they believed Fiorini, a No. 20 selection in the 2015 draft, would fill his spot.

As it turned out he played only 14 games this year as Touk Miller, Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell played huge midfield minutes but the Suns also found Alex Davies and Elijah Hollands in breakout seasons.

Mid-sized forward Alex Sexton is in the last year of a contract also worth over $500,000 next year with his six-goal haul in round 23 opening up the prospect he could have rival suitors.

Collingwood is likely to bring Nick Daicos into the centre square for more midfield opportunities next year with his brother Josh playing a brilliant season on the wing.

Captain Scott Pendlebury is contracted for next year and turns 35 in January but remains his consistent and brilliant self.

The Pies will secure GWS forward Bobby Hill, Brisbane free agent Dan McStay and are keen on Adelaide’s Billy Frampton as they prepared for Brodie Grundy to depart, most likely to Melbourne.

Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell is keen to explore what a fresh start would look like and while he is due over $700,000 next year the Hawks might contribute some of that wage if it secured them a reasonable pick.

But the attraction of Fiorini would be securing him for a modest wage below the competition average and likely a late pick given it would clear cap space for the Suns.

So if Grundy does in fact leave his last game in B&W would have been the ANZAC day game this year.

A game in which I recall quite vividly that he kicked a clutch last quarter goal, showed a heap of emotion and gave it the old tug at the jumper over the heart trick.

Could be worse… At least his last game wouldn’t be the one against the lions where he had 6 kicks at 0% efficiency.

Convince me......Macrae and Callum Brown are also brilliant at VFL level. Macrae i still believe in.

Fiorini will be 26 next season.

Seems like we are going further and further down our shopping list.

Weird thing about Fiorini, is that I remember him being legitimately good 2 years or so ago. And then just clearly. It rated. Given Lyons and Brody, I think there might be some weird stuff there.

Macrae and Brown are both very solid at VFL level. Fiorini averages about 10 more disposals a game than either of them and ridiculous clearance numbers. He’d be worth it as a low risk potentially high reward type.

All the Henry talk here is giving me deja vu of the Scharenberg kind. Every 2 years it seemed like 90% of the board were convinced he was going home and then he’d sign on again. Everyone losing their minds despite the fact that absolutely no genuine media is willing to report that he actually wants out…

Neither are nearly as good as Fiorini in the VFL, and Fiorini has also played a significant amount good level AFL football
