Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith flies back into Melbourne this weekend after a brief European summer sojourn with Collingwood’s draft hand putting it behind the eight ball in securing him.
Industry sources still believe Geelong has the desire to add a pacy, mature-aged mid and the Surf Coast lifestyle that could attract a player who has spoken about dealing with the intense Melbourne football bubble.

Smith already has a strong connection with the Cotton On brand, which is why cheeky rivals say a move down Princes Highway is almost a done deal.

But any additional services agreement funding at Geelong would be heavily scrutinised by the AFL and would have to stack up from a commercial point of view.

The Magpies’ only selection in the first two rounds of this year’s draft is Hawthorn’s second rounder, which could end up drifting into the 40s.

They could give up a future first-rounder but the Pies are known to be keen on key talls including Victoria’s Whitlock twins in the draft.

Hawthorn remains in the mix and could satisfy the Bulldogs’ desire for a first-round pick, which is currently No. 6.

While the Bulldogs would prefer to keep the 23-year-old next year and beyond, their confidence levels have plummeted the longer the season has rolled on.

The Cats are considered the clubhouse leader, given their need for a midfielder refresh, though he is not the engine-room bull that coach Chris Scott has been craving.

The Dogs continue to chase West Coast intercept marker Tom Barrass, which the Herald Sun revealed in April, with their chase for another key back continuing.

Any first round selection they secure for Smith would be critical given they gave up their 2024 first-rounder to bring in Tasmanian first round pick Ryley Sanders last November

While Barrass knocked back offers from clubs such as Sydney last year, it is believed that he is open to considering what a fresh start would look like.

The Dogs have effectively begun planning for life after Smith, with Ed Richards moving into the midfield while others such as Harvey Gallagher have spent some time in there alongside the likes of Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore.

This wont come as a surprise, but on Mid-week Tackle, it was mentioned we have cooled on Bailey Smith.
I wonder if this means we already have another player who’s agreed to a deal behind closed doors?

"We" didn't "get rid" of Adams. He wanted out.
Yes. Because he could see the writing on the wall. He was already effectively pushed out of our midfield. Would he have lasted in his forward role with the likes of Harrison and Richards breathing down his neck this year? Maybe, but it would have been a big gamble for him to stay instead of getting a lucrative deal to play in his preferred position.

Well yeah! I know! He chose a better offer.

I was responding to the suggestion that we somehow forced him out or didn't want him on the list anymore. Not true. It was all his choice.

Doesn't sound like we want to part with any picks.
So maybe a FA? Prob the way to go
We are keen on one of the whitlock boys in the draft

I know you were. Him seeing the writing on the wall was alluding to the fact that he was being pushed out, albeit not forcefully. He might not have been getting forced out of the club, but he probably felt was on the verge of being pushed out of the 22, which for a player of his calibre is pretty much the same thing.

Not sure how we’d make that work. They both seem to be rated well before our first selection.

Yeah, that's the challenge. Somehow have to trade up. Or hope one of them slip. They'll bring in trading 2 years in advance, whether that can help us in this regard, I'm not sure.

Not that I wish the guy ill, he was a great player for us after all. Cant help but wonder whether those groin issues are going to flare up when it counts Hope not for his sake

He would have played all this year if he stayed. I don't think it was clear cut he was going to be forced out at all. And his spot at the Swans is anything but secure! I think the reasons were deeper and more personal.

Tay feeling that there was a chance of losing his spot with us no doubt contributed to his decision, as did a longer contract offer.

But at the time and from hearing him speak subsequently, it seems like the main reason was that missing the gf just sort of broke him and he felt he needed a fresh start. That's the distinct impression I get anyway.. I know the club didn't want him gone.
Anyway. Looking like it will turn out to be an inspired choice from him. I'll be very happy to see him raise the cup with Sydney as long as it's not against us.

FMD - where do I even begin w this?!

Would not be shocked if Trac wants out after how poorly his injury was handled. A lot of stories mentioning his parents are fuming at Melbourne.

Would love him at the Pies, he’s a great guy and a real professional considering what he’s gone through

When he was listing the people that have supported him I was waiting for "the club", but nah. Was quite telling.

Will be interesting to see what the Swans do when Luke Parker is available again.

There's a distinct possibility that Tay could be the first player in history to play all year at one club only to tragically miss the GF, then moves to another club the next year only for the same scenario to play out. That would suck!

Surely they didnt mean 40's.. unless there is gonna be like 10+ FA compo/academy/FS bids before then..
