The Age reporting Sidebottom to play on in 2025

Anyone got the full story for us that can’t access?

Overall, I’m not surprised.
He should be staying on in 2025.
If anything his experience for our younger players will be invaluable.

Only if we can't have Petracca

Trac is a pipe-dream. They desperately want to keep him and will demand a King’s ransom in picks to get him. By contrast, I reckon Dees are sick of Clarry and he’s sick of them. Both club and player need a fresh start.

There’s a deal to be done there for a club willing to take the risk. Given our weak draft hand, I reckon this is the sort of risk/return deal we need to go looking for.

Imagine if Oliver could get back near his best? He’d be a big upgrade on Mitchell. The Daicos bros and DeGoey would feast on his clearances.

Massimo is a hilarious one, love the constant melts from Dons fans seeing him succeed at the Hawks
Part of the reason I’m so keen for Eyre to succeed is because I want to see them melt over him too 😆

The issue here is he has offers north of $800k in front of him per season.

The other concern is …Fly doesn’t give away midfield mins to players he doesn’t trust or as he says numerous times “set them up to fail”.

Next season we will still have a midfield that will contain Naicos, JDG, Mitchell, Crisp, Penldes, Jaicos and possibly even Sidebottom still.

The only player in the current market up for grabs that would command instant midfield minutes as it stands based on the above is Bailey Smith.

Have you seen him play. Would slot in ahead of all those aging players bar Nick and Jordy. $800k must be front loaded, if we can keep trade value low I would push button on this trade

Next year seems to be where a bit turnover will happen so very light this year.

I think this is a huge risk and big mistake.

Hawthorn showed the way be allowing star Premiership players Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Gunston, etc to move to other clubs for the last year or two of their careers, which created spaces and opportunities for the youngsters that they restocked with. Now look at them.

There’s no such thing as a low value trade for an $800k player.

I think this is fine on the proviso that he spends most of the year in the ressies as a depth option

1 more season, 1 more crack and most will retire end of next year. If the kids are good enough they will take their spots.

mitchell and hodge changed clubs in 2016 and 17. has nothing to do with their kids coming on now.

This makes perfect sense, lets us evaluate in 2025 where the list stands. If we arent right up the top then start a rebuild + shedding some older guys with a full compliment of draft picks. We only have pick 30, 45 and 48 at the moment in this years draft it didnt make sense to really start this off season with such limited ability to bring in young players imo

If we have re-signed our veterans it is doubtful we have salary cap space to be signing up solid senior talent. Releasing moderate VFL players doesn’t improve the budget a great deal.

The salary cap is wide open, This has nothing to do with it. These players are needed.

Howe wouldn't have gone on if Murphy didn't retire.
Sidebottom off half back and wing still serves.
Pendles is Pendles.

Geelong kept veterens and stayed successful..

This isn't a "huge risk", these players going on won't be why we struggle or don't struggle next season.

Mitchell and Lewis left hawks 8 years ago, Hodge 7 years ago, i dont think it has that much relevance to their team in 2024

At

Does that mean Finlay stays?

In terms of Trac, once the season is over all he needs to do is publicly state he wants to join Collingwood and it will happen. Would be a massive PR disaster for Melbourne to hold a player who has been through what Trac has against his will.

My only worry is that the Hawks will swoop.
You can't trade someone if the clubs don't have currency. He's got a 5 year deal, he's not gonna sit it out..

I don't know if he only wants to go Collingwood.

I just know the issues the family had, they haven't got over what happened to Petracca,

The Dees doctors, club officials, coaches to not reach out to Trac after he left the ground that day for 24 hours is pretty disgraceful.
Extremely weird club.

So will nobody be retiring this season???

If not, the oldest team in the league is going to be even older, slower and more injury-prone in 2025 than we were this year.

I don’t think this is a good idea.
Reported that all of our current 9 x 30+ year olds will play on next year with Sidebottom being offered a contract for next year. This is quite poor

9. MELBOURNE 2014

Draft picks: Christian Petracca, Angus Brayshaw, Alex Neal-Bullen, Billy Stretch, Oscar McDonald, Aaron vandenBerg, Mitchell White

8. PORT ADELAIDE 2000

Draft picks: Shaun Burgoyne, Kane Cornes, Allan Murray, Domenic Cassisi, Chris Hall, Ben Hollande, Steven Brosnan

7. WEST COAST 2010

Draft picks: Andrew Gaff, Jack Darling, Scott Lycett, Jacob Brennan, Anton Hamp, Jeremy McGovern

6. SYDNEY 2002

Draft picks: Jarrad McVeigh, Sean Dempster, Josh Thewlis, Nick Malceski, Craig Bolton, Heath James, Paul Bevan, James Meiklejohn, Ryan Crawford, Declan O'Mahoney

5. WEST COAST 2001

4. RICHMOND 2009

Draft picks: Dustin Martin, Ben Griffiths, David Astbury, Matt Dea, Troy Taylor, Jeromey Webberley, Ben Nason,Dylan Grimes, Robert Hicks, Pat Contin

3. HAWTHORN 2001

2. HAWTHORN 2004

1. GEELONG 2001

Draft picks: Jimmy Bartel, James Kelly, Charlie Gardiner, Steve Johnson, Gary Ablett, Henry Playfair, Matthew McCarthy, David Johnson, Aaron Lord, Andrew Carrazzo, Will Slade, Adam Chatfield

Two aspects which stand out: first Collingwood is missing and second the three teams that managed to create a dynasty are all in the top 10.

In addition to live in reality one usually requires a sense of humility; an attribute you seem to be in want of.
How good was 2001! Geelong, Hawthorn and West Coast all cleaned up. Can it really be true that all of Ablett Jnr, Bartel, James Kelly, Stevie J, Hodge, Campbell Brown, Sam Mitchell and Chris Judd came from that one draft? Extraordinary!

Agreed. Imagine the hole when nearly all of those nine players retire within the space of 13 months (end of 2025 to end of 2026 seasons).

Retaining all of those players indicates that our club hierarchy thinks we're a chance of going deep in Finals next year. I reckon they're deluded.

I hope nobody on here whinges next season about a lack of foot speed, lack of two-way running and torn hammies/calves, or blames our fitness and conditioning staff for any of those things.

I guess this makes sense, i was expecting Steele to retire this year. But maybe it's Billy, we have Shooter and Richards (if he resigns with us). Maybe Mitchell, depends on how his foot is, but since we don't have another inside mid, i can see him playing.

I really hope some of our young players have a massive, i mean huge pre season, esp Finn and Reef, i have high hopes for them, but my hope is running out, esp with Finn.

If our young players don't stand up next year, we could be looking at a massive cliff at the end of next year.

For those thinking that Melbourne would shed Petracca if he wanted out, despite him having 5 years left on contract, on top of facilitating a deal for Neale-Bullen and possibly losing Oliver, how do you think Melbourne sells this to their members and other players such as Gawn, Pickett, May, Lever, Van Rooyen, Fritsch etc.?

There would surely have to be contingencies put in place before agreeing to gut 2/3 of a dominant Premiership winning midfield, as draft picks aren’t a short term solution.

Instead, isn’t it easier to sell change to players on long term deals and to replace the coaching and medical staff?

In my view maybe Oliver leaves, but only if Melbourne extract full price which might be a few high draft picks or a pick and an established mid who’s ready to play starting midfield from first bounce next season.

It would be nice if we could get senior games into them.
