Lol, some of the hysteria over Stringer is silly. 8 less tackles than McCreery for the year and a 10 tackle game. Played every game and kicked 42 goals. He is exactly what we need and that's why Fly is interested

Is there a stat for how many times he burns a teammate in a better position than him? Thats my biggest query on him. He seems to me to be very selfish. Very talented no doubt, but he strikes me as a guy who puts in a lot harder when the glory is on the line.

You heard it hear first. Stringer to Pies, Richards to Port and noble to GC. I'm prepared to put my reputation as a high school drop out on the line. I will even move to Frankston if it doesn't happen.

If all we get for Richards and Noble is Stringer, that is not a good deal for us.

They were reporting on MMM tonight that reports they are hearing already that Sam Darcy's contract next year will be in the realm $18-20m over 10 years. If that is close to being true I assume they will try and move on both Macrae & Daniel this year. They are hamstrung regarding offloading salary for picks because their first pick is late 2nd round

Our issue will be list spots. So think we maybe take 1 in the trade. Then 3 in the draft this year.
Then when there are more list spots available next year with retirements, go FA/Trade heavy.

Only a thought, but with all the talk of Stringer why hasn’t Brown’s name come up? He has all the physical traits of Stringer, none of the baggage and seems to be out of favour at the Giants. His season never got going again after he cleaned up McCartin and he would be a better fit for our list profile.

Agree with you about Allan and Di Mattia and despite your assessment of my recent posts, have been relentlessly positive about both - and Harrison too. No idea about McGuane but his old man was a favourite of mine.

Personally, I think guys like Parker are traps. They do nothing to lower our age profile, are injury risks once they get into their 30’s and by commanding Best 22 spots actually stifle the development of younger players. So I don’t think the pay-off is real, despite being gettable and nominally cheap. It just kicks the real problem down the road for a bit longer.

We got lucky to get a Premiership in Mitchell’s first year but his injuries this year highlight the risks in having too many of such age. If we get Parker now, he’ll be exiting the team at about the same time as numerous others, which makes the hole even bigger.

Hopefully we get good trade deals on both Noble and Richards because players aged in their mid-20’s are the backbone of most teams and we can’t afford to lose two good ones on the cheap.

I’m also frustrated about Grundy, Macrae, Poulter and McInnes - four guys we drafted in first two rounds who have all left cheaply or been busts. That’s a lousy outcome on four important selections. And Stephenson, of course, is even worse. Those five should all be driving our team forward and instead are a big fat zero. Those fails plus our age profile are largely why I think we’re in trouble.

Anyway, it’s a good discussion. Lots of short- versus long-term trade-off decisions to be made, with big consequences. Interesting times.

Holy shit, I had no idea. That was an awful decision.

I cant remember who it was on Mike Sheehan's show on Fox years ago who highlighted this. We had greed on $$$ and terms. The committee then felt that it was too much money for Quinlan who they felt was getting on 26/27 and tried to reduce $$$. Quinlan said no on principle. He then went to Fitzroy where he played 189 games, kicked 576 goals and won a Brownlow. 12 months later we paid a fortune for Allan Edwards a CHF who had done his knee during the year and was NQR. He played 30 odd games for us over 5 years

If it helps, stringer had 8 less tackles than McCreery for the year. I find it hard to believe that stringer doesn't apply pressure or he wouldn't get a game

Stringer is a terrific tackler in close, those who say he doesn’t tackle don’t watch the game.
He is however an awful chaser and runs forward of the footy a bit.

Naughton is also an elite defender, which is what he was drafted as. He came 4th in their B&F playing key defence in his first year. Honestly I’m surprised the dogs haven’t shifted him back there already at this point.

Has to be his call. They have a weakness in defence and he'd solve it immediately. The perfect attacking, intercept defender type that are one of the most important in the comp. They'd be a much better team with Naughton in defence.
