I think that tipping Collingwood will bounce back is a big assumption. With the competition so even and our list only getting older along with limited youth coming through, there’s every chance we’ll finish as low, or lower than we did this year.

I think any club with a pick around the 10-15 mark would consider a swap for our future first, because at best it will translate to another top 10 pick, and at worst it will be a downgrade of a pick or two which isn’t horrible if a club is keen to move that pick forward.

Considering we carried up to 17 injured players, no continuity for most of them and we still just missed the 8, I'm completely opposite and think we'll well and truly be back up there next year. Even a fit and firing JDG alone will improve us out of site. The top 4 sides this year all have their fair share of holes that need to be fixed. We'll be backing ourselves to win it again next year and a decent run with injuries is all we need to be back up there. This year has seen a pretty average top 4 and there's no guarantee any of them will be back up there next year.

I don’t expect us to have an injury free season, but as long as the right players stay injury free we should be fine

Even with all our injuries we still probably should have made it. A lot of our losses came down to selection and match day coaching

You flip flop with the best of them at times! On the one hand a marginal upgrade in Rioli is needing 6 + and we should be so lucky to receive 20 for a guy you’ve suggested will be a loss next year because of his line breaking? Choose a lane. Hardwick is on record that players are what they’re after and they have one over the line with two years to run on a contract at Collingwood.

None of that is to suggest that I disagree with your take on what the loss of Noble means for the list. I just don’t believe anyone that rates him should be dancing in the streets over a pick that could push out to 27 (Aschroft, Kaku, Lombard, Marshall and perhaps Tauru get bids plus Battle compensation and maybe Perryman).

I don't mind a flip flop - both the footwear and the action, but I don't think I've flip flopped on this one.

I think you might have imagined me saying what tigers should get for Rioli. All I've said is that he's a better player than Noble, but I agree with the sentiment that 6 by itself seems too much to start with - let alone talk about more.

I do think Noble is a loss, but you don't get anything if the bloke isn't a loss. Like all trades of experienced players for draft picks it hurts your chances next year, but improves your chances for the future. A next year loss became pretty inevitable when Noble requested a trade, so it's about getting what we can for the future.

And from what we're hearing about the depth of the draft, an end of first round pick would be well and truly in the first round next year. It's the equivalent of a future first for Little Johnny Noble. **** yeah.

Carlton is attempting to secure Gold Coast’s No. 12 draft pick to make a play at Port Adelaide All Australian Dan Houston as the Blues and North Melbourne haggle over the departing star.
North Melbourne has offered up a trade that would include its future first-rounder, which in the past five seasons has either been the first or second selection.

Clubs asking about Houston have been told the Blues and Roos are the strong front-runners despite him examining his options in recent weeks.

Carlton wants to keep its No. 11 draft pick to secure a young talent in a bumper 2024 national draft crop so is attempting to secure another first-round pick.

The Blues would offer up a future first-rounder to Gold Coast for their No. 12 pick, and then would on-trade that selection to the Power for Houston.

Quite clearly the Power would prefer a Roos selection that will surely be in the top five draft selections even if North Melbourne makes some improvement next year.

Gold Coast might accept a future first-rounder for Jack Lukosius, who chose Port Adelaide as his club of choice on Tuesday.

The fact North Melbourne is a contender is a feather in their cap given he must believe they are a chance to make a strong improvement in quick time given he is 27 and might have only four or five more seasons at his peak.

The Suns have picks six, 12, 20 and 26 and the Tigers will ask for more than their No. 6 draft pick for Daniel Rioli, who is contracted.

While the Suns will push back hard they will have to use pick six in some way in a trade for Rioli.

Collingwood is asking for a first-rounder for half back John Noble but will have to be satisfied with pick 20, which will filter back a handful of spots after NGA and father-son bids.

Eyre and Dean are interesting in terms of our list. Other than Keane, there's been no link to us and a KPD, but surely we have to be chasing at least one, if neither of them are signed yet.

I’m comfortable not chasing Houston if the cost is anything more than just one first round.

We played Josh in that role in the last few weeks of the season to good effect and I rate Parker there as well with another preseason. I’d also be looking to take Bice from Werribee if we can to fill Noble’s role.

If we bring Perryman in as I hope we can also move Crisp back to a back flank or wing or Perryman if he doesn’t work out as a mid.

In short, I’d prioritize Perryman over Houston given the cost difference and try to use Noble and Richards trade to get back into the draft.

The bigger need for me from a back 6 perspective is a full back to replace Murphy. I don’t think Frampton is the solution and you can’t rely on Dean or Eyre at this stage but I don’t know what that solution is.

I agree with you on all of that. With where our list is at, I don't think we can really afford to go all in on the short term with a guy like Houston. Better to hedge our bets with a guy like Perryman for free and keep the draft capital for players of the future.
