But it all comes down to whether you want to keep a player who wants to be somewhere else. That's why players on contract are let go.
Yes...that's the issue...do clubs match an offer, purely to enable them to trade & receive a better deal?
I'm sure the AFL introduced the matching scenario to enable clubs to defend & retain their talent, however if clubs simply match, then trade, the AFL will move to close that loophole. They will change the rule, if you match, you must retain that player & can only trade that player in the future (not in this years trade period).
As you say, if the player wishes to depart, then no point matching & forcing the player to stay.

Therefore, the Crows may not match in this instance.

What would everyone think of us offering Jarrad Grant from the doggies a contract? Is apparently testing the free agent waters. I think his best footy is quality, obviously can go missing a fair bit but I think could be worth a punt. Wouldn't have to give anything up for him and doubt he would cost to much but could be a handy 3rd forward for us.

no thanks unless rookie

If Geelong have to trade for Danger, are we likely to be in the market for Henderson? If so, what do you think he is worth?

2nd rounder would not pay 1st, has not shown enough

The boys club is already big enough at our club...

he is friends yes. but don't see the boys club, assistant at geelong for a far time and head coach at Adelaide.
so be able to say no to bucks and bring good experience to the club

I'm happy to take Aish if available but with Crisp and De Goey developing this year, Sidebottom, Broomhead and Greenwood back to full fitness and Treloar in I think our midfield is OK.

The more pressing concern for me is forward so if Freeman or Witts go, I would be putting energy into finding a key forward to partner with Cloke and Moore, which allows Ben Reid, fitness permitting, to play back with Brown and Marsh.

Just not sure on the options out there - looks like Kreuzer, Sam Reid or Vickery but they don't excite.

Josh Jenkins? Difficult to get, especially if the Crows match the Dangerfield offer. Maybe look at 3 way trade with Aish, Seedsman and picks?

Scott Lycett? Can play forward and ruck and could be looking for opportunities? Only if Witts leaves I'd suspect.

Aaron Black? Swap with Seedsman?

The other one I'd consider, subject to medical, is Nathan Vardy at Geelong. If Crows match the Dangerfield offer, they may need to find another pick - Witts to Dogs, Pick to Cats for Danger trade and Vardy to Pies.

Sigh.

Sidebottom in the top 5 at the club, type of person all clubs want, wont traded.
if its a pretend trade, 2st rounder at least including a top 5 one 1st not enough

Doubt Sando will be considered as an assistant.
I think you're wrong. He'll be at the pies next year if an assistant leaves and I'm all for it. Hawks got Ratten as an ex-senior coach and they love him.

Ask around why he really got the flick, see what you find out as my info. could be wrong.

It's Danger for a compo pick in the mid teens
Vs
Danger for a pick in the top 8 and I dare say another high pick or decent player.
This is the deal for the Crows perspective. It's not about trying to keep a player that wants to leave, it's about getting the best return possible for a player looking to leave.

If Crows match the offer, Geelong definitely trade for him. Minimum is a 1st round pick upgrade from compo pick 14 to top 10 before bidding. Side effect of denying an opponent a free 1st rounder.
