Potentially an unpopular opinion but I'd like to see Josh Daicos in the middle a little bit on Friday night, especially with Sidey back on a wing. Daicos had stints in the middle last year and did well and I think we may need some x-factor in there amongst Adams, Mitchell, Pendlebury with Naicos and JDG out

He’s had rotations into the guts this year and I think that’s how he should be used, given an occasional run there as a change up.

Pack mark as distinct from contested mark. There’s no stat for that, but there is definitely a difference.
He also holds his ground better at throw ins than Cox, despite not having a great leap.

A pack mark by its very name is a contested mark and Cameron ranks behind Moore, Cox, and McStay, and only just pips Johnson and Mihocek by a bees dick.

Cox. Reef. Allan and Carmichael are in the squad at the captains run

That accurately sums up who we rate at the moment.

Cox - still a possibility to return, particularly if we're beaten in the ruck against Brisbane.
Reef - Forward-mid, probably starts to step up next year.
Allan - an outside chance for a late debut, possibly next week.
Carmichael - the versatile option forward.

Curious to see the difference in both teams approach since round 4.
In round 4, the bris forwards just cheated their arses off and kicked heaps of goals by Bris winning the 'swarm'.

One particular one sticks in my mind.
Zorko playing on Nick.
Zorko just sat back and didn't follow nick.
Crisp drops a chest mark....which if he takes it, nick will receive the handball as he was perfectly positioned...most likely has a shot or at least gives our fwds a good look on the lead.
Ball bounces out of crisps hands to lions....bomb it forward to zorko who is alone....goal.

I recall it because if was lauded in the media as a blueprint way to beat us.

Well....if relying on the oppo to drop chest marks is considered a solid tactic....all power to them!

So i'm interested to see how much Bris go with this flat out "win and contest swarm and fwds don't follow to the contest" vs a balance.
Interested to see our balance in response (HBF don't charge to the contest, knowing the fwds will just sag off).

The Lions have been a very good kicking side in recent times, which has allowed them to break through our first line of defence. Allowing guys like Cameron to cheat out the back for easy goals.

This is what i'm most curious to see tomorrow night. What have we implemented to counteract this issue. The Lions are just going atm and even with our outs we should be seeing ourselves as a real chance of winning.

Just to intrude one last time!

I remember watching round 4 and thinking for the first quarter we were going to get smacked. Pies had lightning fast transition, good corridor use, and players free everywhere once they got to 50.

I agree we got plenty of goals out the back. But Fagan also spoke that night of making a tweak - getting our wings and backs to actually push up and be with their pies opponent, rather than be scared and hang back not wanting to get overrun. For a period of the match this caused a lot of turnovers in bad areas for the pies. Indeed despite no collingwood ruckman and all this 6/6/6 infringements collingwood actually had more score from clearances, but we had much higher score from turnover.

I rate McRae highly and i suspect he will adjust this time around. Fagan from my point if view is not a very good match day coach so it was a rare win for him on the night. I suspect he will just go in with the same plan so we could get caught napping tactically if Fly has changed things up

Do you think the pies have had any major gameplan changes since round 4? I know there has been endless discussion on your key stats being brilliant rounds 1-10 and not so great since. Cats match might have been a turning point

No Excuses to not perform we are on top 2 weeks out from Finals, win seals top spot a loss puts us in Jeopardy to drop 2 second if we lose next week. Beat lions at marvel with our outs and knowing we are getting all these guys back will be a massive Physiological edge. Need to Keep winning near so this is our last game away from the MCG. GO PIES !!!! Pies by 21pts and McStay kicks 4

That's about right I think. Coxy still has to be a chance for mine. I don't subscribe to the theory that it's all on our mids for the centre bounces. Yes we need to find something there but Cameron barely got off the ground in the first half last week and I reckon someone had a word at half time because he attacked it totally different in the 3rd qtr against Geelong. But if he's going to continue standing flat footed at centre bounce he's going to get smacked and I would rather have the few geniunely great taps that Coxy gets. If Coxy can bring it around the ground (which depends on the week unfortunately) I think he serves us better based on Cameron's current form. Neither option gives a predictable week in , week out result unfortunately.............Frampton was possibly giving a more consistent level of output when he was in the ruck.

I agree with you mostly here

My issue is our persistence or stubbornness to stick with our game. Maybe I'm just not seeing it but I feel like we never tweak to suit an opponent on the day?

To me, this is the perfect opportunity to do to Brisbane what most teams to do us. Play a slightly different way to suit the opponent we're playing. Despite playing in Melbourne, we seem to be the hunter/underdog this week.

Let's use it

Interesting that Reef, Allan & Carmichael all there but not Macrae? (Or Bianco.)

So it’s fair to conclude that Cox won’t be the sub coz we’d be horribly unbalanced if we had to bring him on to replace a small running player early in the game.

The other three all offer different characteristics. I’d love to see what Allan can do surrounded by AFL-level team-mates but Reef looks the percentage play.

I'd bet it will be Reef.
We havent had any evidence Fly will debut kids as subs, so that rules out Allan.
Between Reef and Carmichael.

I reckon the team will look something like this.

Maynard. Frampton. IQ
Noble. Murphy. Markov
Sidebottom. Pendlebury. Daicos
Beau. Mihocek. Howe
Ginni. McStay. Elliott
Cameron. Crisp. Mitchell
Adams. Ryan. WHE. Lippa
Sub: Reef (or Carmichael, but I think Reef)

Carmy dislocated his thumb in the VFL last week so I find it interesting he's a potential in.
Agree Allan not likely.

So Cox or Reef.
Yeah, surprised about Carmy given his finger, and he was playing more forward in match sim, which I assumed was because of his finger.
I dont think they'll make Cox sub.
I'll go with Reef.

I think it will be Crisp to give us someone who can break from a back - Josh tended to play the defensive side sweeper role that Pendles plays when he played mid last year. I do think he's a solid mid though.

I wouldn't assume that Cox won't be sub. If we don't play him or Krugeur in the 22, we'll be going in with one less tall in the 22 than we have been. So subbing him in wouldn't make us horribly unbalanced - it'd just bring it back to the balance of the 22 that we've gone with heaps of times this year.

I reckon the team will look something like this.

Maynard. Frampton. IQ
Noble. Murphy. Markov
Sidebottom. Pendlebury. Daicos
Beau. Mihocek. Howe

Cameron. Crisp. Mitchell

Despite missing our three best players, it’s still a pretty good line-up. Could possibly snatch the win, if they all play close to their abilities and work together effectively.
