I'm sorry but this game is a training drill that means nothing. We're clearly resting players. Don't show all our cards and work on the essentials.

I'm sure those exact words will be part of Fly's pre-game address.

The club is giving sore players a week to recover from their niggles, JDG might have played if it was a granny; but that doesn't mean they won't coach to win Friday night.

Do you think the game means zip to Ryan?

Geezus. Our three best players out, and Bobby, after he played arguably, his best game. And after he and Ginni put on some sort of show. Was really looking forward to the encore.

Good luck to young Ryan. Hope he gets a decent haircut before the game, but that’s just a whine on my part.

Feeling a bit flat now about our prospects for tomorrow night. We’re good but not so good as to overcome the loss of so much talent.☹️

Wade has his work cut out for September.

It's disappointing but at least a chance for some other players to get some game time. I don't care so much if we win or not, just whether we play well.

I would have rested one of Mitchell or Adams myself. But this debate has been going on for weeks and our coaches are obviously waiting for the pre-finals bye.

We have a lot of players who wouldn’t be guaranteed of selection for the first final so hoping that brings out the best in everyone this weekend. With 4 big outs and Cox, Johnson etc waiting in the wings I’m hoping that we see a really motivated group run out tomorrow night.

Fly has been super consistent with debutants since he took over.
1. They start.
2. They play more than 1 game.

So i'm expecting Ryan to play vs dons as well (unless he has an all time first game mare!)

Excited to see what we do this week tbh.
Feel like its a pre-season game, such is my low care factor on a win.

Just want no injuries and to see the method we go with.
Learnt enough from last weeks game to know where we sit.

I think the club will see this as a challenge as opposed to the doom and gloom on here!
I seriously doubt that Ryan will be retained on principle at this stage of the season if we have best 22 players returning next week. I’d wager that the communication to him would firmly be that this is a taste of senior footy as reward for his form this year, with a view to preparing him for next year.
Nobody, including Ryan himself would be expecting him to be playing multiple weeks if we have Jordy and Hill returning.

Agree, what a ridiculous comment to make (not you)

A win is a must, a poor defeat will be demoralising and unacceptable. Yeah they have a full squad and we have 4-5 top liners out but at home we should still be ultra competitive, anything les is not up to standard regardless of situation.

This bullshit that we won’t go hard / training drill blah blah blah is grade 5 talk!

Re the pre-finals bye, I expect that this is very much looked forward to by the players, and factored into training and rehab regimes.

When we met McCreery at the sponsors’ function a few weeks ago, even he confirmed with us that there was a break before the finals. I thought it funny at the time, and probably just him making ‘footy’ talk with us, but interesting nonetheless.

I suspect that Crisp will be playing midfield with Jordy and Nick out - so that we've got someone who can burst from stoppage. So it'd be pretty routine to slide Ryan out and Crisp into defence when Jordy returns. But if he plays well, all he'll need is an injury to a defender to get back in. I think it's a genuine opportunity for him.

For the life of me I don’t see what Cameron brings to the table that has him clearly elevated above Cox in the pecking order. No doubt Cox has had some absolute stinkers but he has also dominated matches and caused mayhem and panic within opposition sides. IMO Cox’s upside is so much higher than Cameron’s and he has shown himself to be a big game performer on multiple occasions. I really don’t get it. Anyway…..moving on.

Coz has been totally ineffectual around teh ground . hitouts are overated as most ruckmen are ( except maybe Gawn - but he does his best work around the ground) Cameron is an effective workhorse .. brings the ball to ground.. it i s the mids that need to step up .........

Whilst my personal view is aligned to yours.....the attitude and consistency of behavior at the Pies over the past 18 months says otherwise.

They have been very consistent with their wording (and actions).
"Patterns of behavior."
"Setting up for success."
"Won't play debutants as the sub."

There is no way in this world that the coaches have had an open conversation to him that its "this week only as a taste".
The words will be positive and "you've earned this spot. So its yours to keep if you do what the team needs."

Severely doubt Hill is playing next week.
Not 9-10 days after 'awareness' with basically game not on the line.
Suspect they'll leave Jordy out, or pull someone else for a break and keep Ryan in.

Even if next week he becomes the sub, it will still fulfill the mantra of more than one game for a debutant (which i'm a firm believer in btw).

Time will tell I guess.

Ryan for Moore. Frampton covering Moores position anyway, but to maintain Howe up forward
Sidebottom for DeGoey
Cox for Hill - Given we have played a lot of the year and last year with two rucks, this would make the lineup feel very familiar. Although it seems like a swap of a tall for a small, difference is Ginnivan would be starting and Howe having another go up forward and Cox as a resting tall forward will add their dimensions up forward
MacCrae as sub - Id rather he start on the ground and have Carmichael sub instead of Coxs inclusion, but its late in the year to unsettle the side that much

Most teams have a couple players out, so this is still a pretty strong line up

Seems like we would be having 6 permanent forwards, with Cox and WHE to rotate in rather than rotating mids. Our mids, especially Mitchell, Adams and Lipinski might thrive being on the ball more

Too much doom and gloom in here. Get up and about team. We're top of the table for a reason.

Debuting the Greek Freak, Sidey to return and Ginni into the 22. Missing some stars but that's ok, we've got plenty of coverage out there. Lippa and Crispy to be more prominent through the midfield, and we can see what Frampton has to offer in a full game as a KPD. McStay and Checkers to continue building their cohesion up forward.

Pumped for tomorrow, bring it.

Without having seen Jen’s training report I think you nailed it until the last one. McInnes was dominant v Geelong last week as a forward and offers more at ground level to compensate for the loss of Hill. Cox is done in 2023 without injury or a further dip in output from Cameron. Ryan would then release Crisp into the middle so we effectively have the same defensive group as v Geelong in terms of numbers as well as a similar midfield group.

As I posted earlier in the week I’d look to swing Pendles back as well for more experience on that line rather than compromise the forward third with the role Howe is likely to have keeping Andrews accountable.

Reef played purely in the midfield in match sim.
Carmy was forward, pinch hit mid.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Reef sub though. I'm gonna head down to the captains run to see if who is out there and get a sense who the choices for sub are. I doubt its a ruck like Cox, or johnson. It'll be a a mid, or utility.

There's the difference between you and me. I only care if we win. I don't want us to play well and lose, then feel like I have wasted 2 and a half hours of my life watching a piece of bloated leather being chased up and down an oval by 36 demented blokes. Only losers accept losing. If you are good enough to play well, you are good enough to win.

I doubt De Goey and Hill will be back before the first final

Yeah, but another difference might be the difference between thinking short term and long term -- or reading their relationship differently at least.

I want to win the Premiership. Everything else is secondary from now on.

To do that we have to have our best players in the best shape possible.

That means that decisions about this weekend are subordinated to this long-term goal.

EG: We might suffer a touch this week by not playing DeGoey, who would likely play if it was a final. But it's right to let him heal for these bigger battles down the track.

Only losers don't want to plan more than one week ahead.

Now, it's fair to argue that winning this week is essential to winning later. But you would have to make that argument, not talk about your personal feelings.

Cox. Reef. Allan and Carmichael are in the squad at the captains run

I reckon Reef will be the sub. He had a very good game in the VFL last week.

Yes, McInnes getting another crack would be great too. It would definitely suggest Cox is done for 2023 and probably the same for Ash Johnson

I’d prefer Carmichael to be the sub personally. I thought he played well considering his thumb and I don’t think we get enough from McInness as the sub. He’s not a runner and he’s low possession which doesn’t feel a great mix for a guy that’s hopefully being asked to impact late. I do think you’ll be right.
