Just to intrude one last time!

I remember watching round 4 and thinking for the first quarter we were going to get smacked. Pies had lightning fast transition, good corridor use, and players free everywhere once they got to 50.

I agree we got plenty of goals out the back. But Fagan also spoke that night of making a tweak - getting our wings and backs to actually push up and be with their pies opponent, rather than be scared and hang back not wanting to get overrun. For a period of the match this caused a lot of turnovers in bad areas for the pies. Indeed despite no collingwood ruckman and all this 6/6/6 infringements collingwood actually had more score from clearances, but we had much higher score from turnover.

I rate McRae highly and i suspect he will adjust this time around. Fagan from my point if view is not a very good match day coach so it was a rare win for him on the night. I suspect he will just go in with the same plan so we could get caught napping tactically if Fly has changed things up

Do you think the pies have had any major gameplan changes since round 4? I know there has been endless discussion on your key stats being brilliant rounds 1-10 and not so great since. Cats match might have been a turning point
I think we have been evolving throughout the year.
Teams have found ways to combat our game plan, so we need to have ways to combat their actions.

I dont think this week will be much different, for the last few weeks it is about learning and trying new things, for when situations occur during finals.

Happy with reef potentially being sub.

Macrae not being named emergency… after the season he’s had… and his performance in the VFL last week (25 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances) says to me that there is something about him that they are not keen on (kicking inside 50?)

More and more I reckon Macrae will be elsewhere next year

Mcrae Reef and Allan are our future over net few years - they aint going anywhere .. tradesdeslitings etc more likely from Rusoce Bianco Draper and the likes

Yeah, surprised about Carmy given his finger, and he was playing more forward in match sim, which I assumed was because of his finger.
I dont think they'll make Cox sub.
I'll go with Reef.
Reef kicked 4 goals in wet conditions last week, so I agree that he'll be "da man".

I seriously doubt that Ryan will be retained on principle at this stage of the season if we have best 22 players returning next week. I’d wager that the communication to him would firmly be that this is a taste of senior footy as reward for his form this year, with a view to preparing him for next year.
Nobody, including Ryan himself would be expecting him to be playing multiple weeks if we have Jordy and Hill returning.
I like it. Give him a taste of what ought to be some pretty high octane footy in preparation for (hopefully) more time next year.

I agree with you mostly here

My issue is our persistence or stubbornness to stick with our game. Maybe I'm just not seeing it but I feel like we never tweak to suit an opponent on the day?

To me, this is the perfect opportunity to do to Brisbane what most teams to do us. Play a slightly different way to suit the opponent we're playing. Despite playing in Melbourne, we seem to be the hunter/underdog this week.

Let's use it

I see what you're getting at and i'm sure there are slight tweaks depending on who we play.

However, i believe we stick to the way we like to play more often than not, and adjust the tempo when required. This creates and sustains a level of predictability amongst teammates, who know exactly what each other will do during certain moments in a game.

Where the Lions tend to get us is in a 15 min patch where they pile on 5-6 quick goals, and they go on to win by 20-30 points. They're a very good kicking side and have pierced through our midfield zone at ease over the past few years.

What i want to see tomorrow night is a really strong defensive effort across the entire ground for 4 quarters. The Lions are just going atm and if we put the heat on then i can see us being too strong at the end of the game. Their final quarters have been quite ordinary of late. We might be missing some stars but we can still put in a performance worthy of being the top side in the comp.

I think WHE is much loved within the 4 walls and the group will be pretty keen to put in a good effort for him in his 200th
He’s won me over this year. I can’t fathom some of the calls early in the changes thread that he was under pressure. The Sunday Footy show ran footage of how we turned it around v Geelong in the 2nd Q and he was in everything!

He was really good last week. His strengths are clearly his running ability and his marking. He needs to be flying for and impacting as many aerial contests as possible. In a season as tight as this, it's these types of players that can be the difference between winning a flag and bowing out in a prelim.

Coz has been totally ineffectual around teh ground . hitouts are overated as most ruckmen are ( except maybe Gawn - but he does his best work around the ground) Cameron is an effective workhorse .. brings the ball to ground.. it i s the mids that need to step up .........
Against Gawn I’m taking Cox every time at Ruck contests. Gawn has far more trouble with Cox than Cameron.

I’d love it be Maynard. He’ll run through walls for his team-mates. In an injury-depleted, backs-to-the-wall desperate battle, he’s the guy I want leading the charge.

I think they'll rotate it, but who it'll be tomorrow, one of Adams or Maynard I reckon.
