Is the best way to integrate JUH in the senior system by playing him as the concussion sub (if it goes ahead)?

Bear in mind he can still play in the 2s if there isn't a concussion. But it would be a great way of taking the pressure off him during a debut game or at very least involve him in match day preparation and all the other things that go on during an AFL game.

You'd probably expect he would only have to play 2-3 quarters at most as well.

The concussion sub could be a major factor this year, especially when injuries can have a massive bearing on the result of the game.

I reckon sitting on the pine not knowing if you are going to get a gig or not would be very very tough mentally for a kid, then if you have to, come on and perform

True but he doesn't have the gas tank to be at a senior level yet. Not to mention he does have the x factor that could win us a game if something like that does occur.

Will be very interesting to see how teams approach it.

Nah, too much uncertainty. Plus, given the main question mark on him is his tank, if there is a sub in the first 10 minutes of the game, he is no chance to run out the game.

I like the thinking, but we're in the comp to win, not to develop JUH. If he's not ready to play AFL he plays VFL.

Our concussion sub should be a fit, versatile, and above all mature running player who can deal with the uncertainty and we have confidence can play at the level. JJ or Duryea would be fantastic 23rd men.

I think the problem is when the VFL game is before the AFL one, the sub will probably play 1-2 quarters of the VFL so they're not cooked. JUH would be better off getting full time minutes into his legs. Honestly whoever the sub is will miss out on some valuable development time if they're young so that's a downer.

Also a small would be a more versatile option than a tall. JJ or Roarke will probably be subs when not in the AFL side cause they could cover someone on every line.

who is going to be 23rd Man for the game ? R Smith

Wood? He might be a good option. Experienced player who could do it but probably doesn't have the match fitness to run out a full game?

I hate the process about how this rule comes into play 24hr before the first game, but it does give good thought for discussion I suppose.

I wouldn’t be starting an injury prone player as the injury sub. Imagine he comes on and does a hammy. Wood is the type you need an injury sub for.

Not many team selections above include Scott or McNeill. I'd be confident that at least one of these players will be selected; they've both featured in the 2 practice games for a reason. Obviously, they are at least in consideration based on Bev's planning for Round 1 so no surprises if either is selected.

I don’t have either in my preferred team, but would accept if 1 of them is provided it is leaving out a Bailey Dale or VDM (due to injury/knock concern) instead of a JJ.

I’d be slightly worried if both are selected though.

I don't mind this sub rule, its bloody annoying when a player goes down early and we are down a rotation
Esp with the reduced Cap, the sub could be really important

Be interesting to see how clubs manage this with VFL games on the same day

IMO it's naïve to think club medical staff don't have at least some bias towards the club. We've seen them make some strange decisions in the past, plus they are not infallible. They make mistakes. I think a rule like this just opens up exploitation.

Not a fan.

The 12 day mandatory period mitigates this a fair bit though.

Is there a minimum unavailability for the player if they come off injured and are subbed out now? I know it’s 12 days for a suspected concussion but for this rule to be rock solid, there needs to be at least a 12 day no play situation for any sort of subbed injury.

Can see Roarke being placed as our sub a lot. Same with Jong. Both versatile and match fit. Could play half a VFL game and I’d be comfortable that either could still come in for three quarters and perform.

Hate the idea of Marra being used in that role. He’s not flexible positionally and his fitness is currently garbage. He’d get much better gains from running out an entire VFL game.
