Perhaps it’s just pre-season nerves but I’m struggling to see how we’re gonna stay within 4-5 goals of that Cats line-up, especially with Lippa and Ginni missing.

If nothing else, I hope the whiney little mummy’s boy has a humiliating debut in the blue & white hoops. That would be a win in my book.

One thing i know... if whoever lines up on ollie henry gives him a hug immediately prior to the first bounce we can put a line through our season.
I don't think that will be the case. I think there is a lot more bad blood in this situation compared to the treloar one.

Geez, I hope you're wrong, can't see how the Cat's have improved since the Semi final (likely to have no Selwood, Hawkins, Duncan, J Henry) and they have recruited on opportunity rather than need. Whilst we have bolstered the area's of need (McStay, Titch, Frampton, Hill) and have more natural improvement in our list than the Cats (due to age profile). We lost the Semi because Rohan played out of his skin and we got smashed in the centre clearance, hopefully Titch and a fit Adams will help there, and the law of averages will help with Rohan (that is, average players tend to have average games). I won't be devastated if we lose, but I'm confident that we can win (as long as we don't continually bomb the ball long out of our D50 in the hope of a contested mark - that's suicide against the Cats - we need run and carry out of the back-line and through the middle, not Hail Mary long bombs!) - Go Pies, can't wait for the real stuff to start.

Unpopular opinion. It's not like-for-like but Murph has shown a lot more than IQ in the pre-season. IQ is faster, more agile and built like a rigid exterior portaloo however ball in hand he's been fumbly and a bit slow in his decision-making. Murph seems more considered and confident if a little slower. Given we're at the start of the season and we have the opportunity to wrench a couple of Ws in our favour, I'd be happier with IQ as a sub tbh.

Happy to be pilloried but I know what I see.

Think IQ was just slightly off against the Hawks. Possibly trying to do too much at times.

I'd back him in to bounce back and improve on last year. All reports about his fitness etc. have been great this off season. In fact if you had to put someone down as one most likely to improve based off their pre-season, you'd have to nominate him.

This post pretty much summarises my confusion around the way the media has written us off all pre-season. Thinking we over-performed and can't simply "over-perform" again, despite actually improving our list.

And also the Cats recruiting, spot on again. Suddenly Bowes became a superstar overnight despite not being in the Suns best 22 most weeks. Henry, who knows which way he'll go. Bruhn likewise. Potential only at the moment. And Clark from the Falcons, anyone would think he was a #1 prospect that slid all the way to them at their gifted selection. He got drafted to his projected pick range.

All in all, like you said they'll be missing a couple to injury and retirement. And they're older. Why should they improve? I'm backing us in to improve.

I was reliably informed in the lead-up to the 2022 trade period by a few posters on BF that Ollie wouldn't get a run in the Cats forward line. Not good enough to displace any of the incumbents. Would be playing VFL in 2023 if he got a trade there. On that basis, I'm therefore not expecting to see him next Friday night unless the cameras pan to the Cats players in the stand supporting the senior team.

I’m not sold on Frampton, I could be but I need him to do something convincing. Geelong will give us a better read.

I still have a feeling Murphy will improve on last year, could be some confused feelings rumbling away with last nights Vindaloo.
That’s right just because he’s tall and can kick doesn’t mean he’s going to be of use as a defender. I haven’t been overly impressed from what I’ve seen, but happy to be patient. He couldn’t get a game at Adelaide

I’m really keen to see how we’ll structure up. Defensively and in the midfield.

I wouldn’t be surprised for this game that we went in with Frampton and Murphy. On paper it seems too big, but Murphy can play small and we still keep our mobility. Intriguing…..

I’m a little more concerned with the midfield balance. I’m struggling to understand how Mitchell and Adams can exist along with Sidey. You can add Pendles in there also, but he has shape shifting abilities still, so can be excused. Our balance is off. It’s what I’d call a glacially moving entity. We are reverting to moving at the speed of dark….

Nick has been added and along with DeGoey and Crisp for some speed uptake. But we have a need……a need for more speed…..
Is there a Goose and Maverick amongst our group. Or maybe we can capture some speed by using the sum of our parts to create it.

I think I’ve read somewhere, RamBeau has a little speed. Maybe we can repurpose it for a greater good. And there is also a myth that has been circulating that the New Kid on the Block Allan may possess some speed. Or there’s this bloke that resembles Sonic’s nemesis, Doctor Eggman.

Can’t wait to see how Fly and Co. will solve our dilemma.

pendles is now a HBF, Sidey is a HFF, Tay is a forward pocket, and all including Mitch are slow. So it'll be up to the first 4 players to keep up with opposition midfields, with Mitch a handy addition to help with clearances & link up play.

& I wouldnt use past years as comfort when our star players are clearly on the decline. By that thinking you must also expect Pendles to be "matching the top echelon" of players in 10 years time. Theres a reason none of those second grouping of mids made the AA 40 squad last year....
Tay playing fwd does not preclude midfield minutes any more than Elliot, who goes in there regularly.
BNE: Lyon, Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Berry are their main mids.
We have, JDG, Mitchell, Adams, Crisp, Lipinski (injury free)- with Daicox x2, Sidey, Pendles, McCreery, Elliot, Carmicheal and even Maynard and Hill as rotations. Then McCrae Harrison, and Arlo developing.
As too your AA comment - we had 2 mids in the 44, Jaicos and Crislp, BNE had McCluggage and Neale.

So I'm not sure the circumstances are as dire as you suggest.

Doggies might be back in contention in 2023. Liam Jones is what they have needed for years. A tall key defender. They have always been one short down there.

If I were Bevo, I'd consider moving Naughton back and playing Darcy, Lobb and Ugly Hagen forward. That would be an amazing spine with Liam Jones.

Sorry mate, I can’t stop dancing in the graveyard.… it’s me not you….
He should have had himself buried at sea. Then he would have happily had you dance on his grave.

On another matter, Markov getting a game ahead of Murphy or McInnes in a couple of these projected teams makes the latter two players look third rate.

WHE is seemingly considered the front runner to replace Lipinski but should that be the case?

A lot of positivity has surrounded McInnes this preseason and while it mightn't mean much wasn't WHE relegated to the substitute bench behind him in one of the preseason games?

Whether it be McInnes or the trimmed down Carmichael sooner or later we need to start giving these younger utility types more opportunity.

Yeah I'd rather take a risk with a younger prospect than keep the safe option. And I do like WHE, but just think this is as good time as any to re-introduce reef back into the fold.

His pre season has been an anti climax given the hype surrounding the muscle rippled physique he has developed over summer.

You can’t replace somebody if you’re already in the team.

You can replace someone in the starting 22 if you were going to be the 23rd man.

Media seem to think WHE is a lock for the 22 but prior to the Lipinski injury I'm not so certain and my original argument is that perhaps McInnes is actually in front of him given his preseason as a half forward/mid, while WHE who has spent the preseason in defence remains the preferred substitute.

I thought the same round 3 last year and we blitzed them with a 9 goal quarter when we were still learning our new game plan.
