Port demolition concluded, next up, the Richmond Tigers. Another beauty in store. And hopefully another beautiful smashing that dents the confidence of a team vying for top 4. Come on Pies, I won't be happy until the Richmond players have to book themselves in for therapy. I want them to see trauma specialists.
The Mighty Magpies
Where are we at? In the view of some commentators we are now Premiership favourites and we're definitely better than last year. Our system is shining like a beacon. We shred opponents' defences like a cheese grater. Our speed on the counterattack is the most exciting footy I think I've ever seen. We're now winning clearances. And Darcy Cameron
-- I had him as a slight disappointment this year -- but he seems to be even better. This vindicates the Grundy decision, football-wise (culture is another discussion).
Do we have any concerns? The one worry I have is about our key forwards and key backs.
Forwards: Mihocek is a warrior, McStay is a good role player. Can we dominate if we don't rely on our small and medium forwards? Maybe we'll never have to find out -- maybe our spread of goal kickers is just a tsunami that cannot be stopped. This is going to be intensified by the injury to Mihocek -- who may be missing for a few weeks. Who can replace him? Ash Johnson and Wilson showed sublime touch in the 2nds, but they are more properly flankers.
Our key backs are fine, but Frampton still makes me worry a bit. And THIS is the side of Richmond that might, just might, test us. Lynch, Riewoldt and their new young guy have shown they can still punch on.
The Tigers, may they ever be traumatised
Richmond are -- like so many teams -- hard to read at the moment. It's a bit early to really get a read. They've added midfield depth but I'm not sure about their disposal or pace. Lynch, Martin, and Cotchin keep performing but surely they'll drop off a bit. Bolton is a wild card with Dusty. They have a lot of good role players. Their defence isn't what it was. All up,I have them somewhere between 4-8th. Then they'll take a step or two back next year. But they'll fight the good fight this year and can upset anyone - even us.
For all that, let's be honest: they won't be able to handle us. No sir. Call the counsellors. They might just match us at clearances but they will wilt under our relentless pressure, our lightning movement, the sheer diversity of our attack. They'll put up a good fight, but a good fight won't be enough to face the Magpie Massacring Machine. The will drop to their knees in the face of the the Pies Potent Potentialities. They will seek out the therapist once they've seen the Collingwood Creative Culture. They're on a slow slide down the ladder. We're on the rapid ascent. It's time they had a reality check and we are the team to do it.
