Not sure I’m happy about Volk coming in on extremely short notice. It’s a bloody tough fight regardless of the limited prep. Not a smart move by Volk IMO. He must be in good knick and no doubt he got offered a truckload to save the card.

you’d have to think he is in pretty good nick otherwise why blow likely his last chance and double champ.

Also huge risk for Islam Volk is a much tougher challenge based on previous fights than oliveria and he now need to build a totally different game plan

Bisping did the same against Rockhold and ended up overcoming the odds. Can't remember how much notice but it was similar.

Bisping said years later that he was worried going into the fight as he hadn't had adequate preparation and his trainer told him that he has being training for this moment (to become champion) all his life so what was there to be worried about. He's a professional fighter, he knows how to fight. Go out there and do what you know how to do.

Same goes for Volk, with the added experience of having fought this guy before I think he'll go into the fight as prepared as he needs to be to win.

I ****ing LOVED Rockhold but I can’t remember a) a champion being so utterly arrogant and dismissive of a challenger in a title fight, maybe ever? b) a faster harder fall from grace (and chin robustness) than Lukes.

Fingers crossed for Volk, an Aussie double champ woukd be incredible

I have not seen a fight live since Lionel Rose and Alan Rudkin at Kooyong. I also Lionel in another fight at the Palais in ST.kilda around about the same time. I came out of my office one daay and saw Lionel sitting on the steps of the Wodonga court house. So I went and sat beside him and had a yarn. He was a really nice bloke to talk to.

Lionel Rose v Alan Rudkin - 8th March, 1969

Lionel Rose v Guts Ishimatsu may be the other fight you're talking about Barry - 10th October, 1970 at the Palais

Bisping beating Rockhold is hands down my favourite MMA moment of all time. When you look at Bispings career, especially earlier on, every time he got beaten - he was beaten by a guy taking PED's. Every single time. Vitor, Sonnen, Wandlei Silva, Henderson etc.

To see him win the title and then defend it against Dan Henderson (to avenge his insane KO loss) was just awesome.

With one eye too, having lost it against a juice head.

Totally deserved to become a champion

I always held a grudge against Bisping because of what he did to his team mate (can't remember his name... the deaf guy) right at the start of his UFC career on the ultimate fighter. Popped his arm in training. Reckon he did it on purpose.
