He didn’t know. When you’re carrying a load that heavy you can clip a car and not feel it.

Years ago, we did a work team-building hot air balloon ride and the transport was a minibus with a trailer carrying the balloon and basket. The trailer with the basket was wider than the bus. The trailer hit a cyclist in exactly the same fashion as this incident. We had to scream at the driver to stop the ****ing bus as he just didn't believe that he'd hit anything.

So, decided to have a look at the area as I dont know it. Plenty of back street he could have taken, even with bike paths through parks. What some cyclist fail to understand is that riding is dangerous. We have done so much to make roads safer but some stupid riders still think they can own the road. From the footage it is clearly a dangerous road for a bike and anyone with half a brain would avoid it. So I'm guessing you only have a quarter of a brain.
Sorry mav but the cyclists should stick to cycling tracks arguement is crap. for one i cycle and out here cycling paths are almost non existent. And if you were traing for a gran fondo you simply couldnt. Whilst there is a small percentage of irresponsible cyclists the same is true for mororists. Not excusing the few cyclists that dont ride responsibly but they have as much right to use the roads as anyone else.

Yeah I was going to add that to my post, it doesn’t help that there’s a lot of dickhead truckies out there that use the size of their trucks to intimidate.

On the other hand there’s a lot of dickhead cyclists out there that don’t do the cycling community any favours by only obeying the road rules when it suits, or the campaigners that don’t move over to let a car past.
Motorcycles… you lot know what you do….

nope disagree. Cyclists are a hazard to themselves, there are easy alternatives. If youre training, head out to the country and train, if your commuting take the back streets and if your just out enjoying a ride what the **** are you doing on such a bust street? The whole, oh but we have just as much right as anyone to use the road is just bollocks. I cant skateboard down the road, I cant roller skate down the road, I cant pogo stick down the road, wtf should cyclists be allowed? If you cycle, cycle responsibly and not down roads where you make trucks have to zig zag through traffic.

Geez, talk about spoiling a team building day.

Jeepers - getting nasty now.

Bitter fallout between Glenn Archer and Mark Vander after crash in Heidelberg

North Melbourne great Glenn Archer says the cyclist he hit with his truck demanded money after the crash but the cyclist says Archer needs to “man up and own his errors”.

The cyclist left with horrific injuries after he was hit by a truck allegedly driven by Glenn Archer says he’s yet to receive a direct apology – but the former footy star has hit back claiming the victim was trying to get money out of him.
Mark Vander, 58, sustained three broken ribs, damage to a bone in his knee and four neck vertebrae in the January 11 incident on Rosanna Rd, Heidelberg.
Archer has been charged with careless driving and failing to keep a safe distance when overtaking but claims he had no idea he hit the cyclist at the time.
Mr Vander last night claimed Archer only reached out to him three weeks after the incident.

He said by then the dashcam footage capturing the moment he was hit before the truck drove off had attracted 200,000 views on social media.
“I got an unsigned email from the company to say the ‘driver has seen the footage, can he call you?’ ” he said.
Mr Vander said the email did not contain an apology and was “totally disingenuous”, adding that the time for reparations was weeks ago.
“The time to call me was in the days after the accident when you found out you had run me over,” he said.
But ex-Kangaroos great Archer hit back on Wednesday night, saying Mr Vander had called his workplace demanding a large sum of money just two days after the incident and he initially thought it was a scam.
He said Mr Vander had received insurance money.
“He has sent personal letters to my house, I’m not sure how he got my personal home address,” Archer told the Herald Sun.
“Two days after the event he was ringing the office screaming and yelling at the owner and the office girl saying ‘one of your trucks has knocked me off my bike’.”
“Every conversation, email and letter has been about money. You need to send me $33,000.”

Mr Archer said he had no idea what Mr Vander was calling about as he hadn’t been aware the truck had hit him.
“At first I thought this was a scam,” he said.
But he said a week after it happened police left a message for him and that’s when he sent an email to Mr Vander asking if he could call.
Mr Vander said he just wants Archer to “man up” and take responsibility.
“I would just tell him to man up and own his errors and, you know, show some remorse,” he said.
“He might have played 311 games where he smacked blokes from behind when they couldn’t see him coming, but when it’s time to man up, he’s an absolute coward.
“He hasn’t faced the music at all.”

Interesting quote.

No winners here.

Arch did the wrong thing but sounds like the cyclist is being an A grade arseh*le about it.

nah, i'm only in danger as a cyclist when dickheads in cars put me in danger. i take up significantly less space, emit no carbon, don't go fast enough that i could really hurt myself or anyone else, and i even get exercise as a biproduct of getting around. i have absolutely no interest in ever driving a car because it's worse in every way to me. I ride on busy streets when those busy streets haven't been built correctly, i.e. without protected bike paths, because I don't have any other choice. Sorry that you have to pay a little bit of attention so as not to kill me, but I've got a right to be out there.

Can't blame him for being angry, the absolute entitlement of drivers really gets to you as a cyclist. You have a terrifying front-row seat to every stupid thing they do that almost kills you.

It's not really Glenn Archer's fault though, it's an infrastructure problem. If drivers would just support continued expansion and improvement of the city's bike path networks, they wouldn't have to worry about almost killing us.

So did this bloke try to rip into Archer for money upfront? Arch must have the emails asking for $33k.

Of course he’s angry I would be too. I’ve had the misfortune of being knocked off my bike while riding in a bike lane (taxi turned left into a driveway without paying any attention to the fact that I was riding straight ahead in a bike lane) so I know what motorists and trucks are like from the perspective of a cyclist.

Archer definitely was in the wrong and should apologise but if the cyclist just started demanding money and then starts throwing out quotes like that in the media he’s being an arseh*le about it.

There’s something weird about this story.

Like obviously Archer, as the overtaking driver, is at fault.

But why does the cyclist need $33k in addition to the insurance payout?

I have a good mate who got hit by a car while cycling, he broke a finger, and the insurance payout was circa $50k.

It was literally enough for a house deposit about a decade ago, and his injuries were not as bad as this dudes’.

Why is the cyclist chasing up money at all?

Ignorant. Read again, there is an alternative safer route for everyone. Stop putting me and others in danger by riding on busy streets. If trucks weren’t driving the streets you’d have to make your own bike from scrap you found around the house? How do you think shit gets delivered around the city? Your ignorant self entitlement is why so many people hate cyclists.

Head out to the country?

I gave it up because of drivers thinking it appropriate to give me half a metre on an empty road at 100 km hr.

And when you get home and look at the rear facing footage and see no deviation for 1 km, you think that I like my life or I like the use of my legs or I like the use of my four limbs.

Why are you threatened by people riding bikes?

The bloke comes across as an absolute knob jocky.

Why are you threatened by people riding bikes?
Because trying to stop 15 plus tonnes of truck quickly doesn't happen. Either does zig zagging between lanes. So many bike riders have no consideration (see above) for other road users. They complain the roads aren't safe for bike riders and then proceed to ride on those roads (see above) and don't want to have to live with the death of someone on my conscious because of a very small error in judgement like Archer.

There's 10's of kilometres of bike paths in the South East, but where do the bike riders all ride?

On the road.

Bike paths aren't the problem.

FL 2023: David Noble opens up on his suitability for coaching, painful exit from North Melbourne

David Noble spent eight of the past 10 years in administration yet he was made senior coach of North Melbourne. So was he ever suitable for the head coaching role?

"...yet he was made senior coach of North Melbourne"
