It's an interesting point and something I've been wondering for a while. Is there an opportunity cost of bringing in a new, ever so slightly better player at the expense of delisting a worse player who knows our system?
Conceptually, I support the direction we took. However, the fact that we stepped in every single possible pothole along the way is hard to take. Has there ever been an example of this degree of self-damage in the history of sport? It’s an honest question. Worst still, the self-damage is by no means over yet. We can only hope we can come out the other side of it all.

You don't get to sling shit when you ****ed off to the other side of the world and took thousands for the occasional phone call. Total w***er.

Good on King for calling out the hypocrite Roos.

The club - ideally through Sonja - needs to address Caroline Wilson's article and allegations in the media.

Wilson has joined the list blaming Clarko and the club for not tanking against GC - the AFL should've already scolded these journos for saying clubs should cheat. It hasn't and we should respond now.

Sonja also needs to put to bed Wilson's allegations of disunity and all her magnifying of Clarko's behaviour. Say we knew what we were getting into - he's a 4 x premiership coach but we knew he's not perfect. Swearing in frustration is hardly a hangable offence but we're working with him on it. He's inherited a young list that's being rebuilt. It is frustrating. But he's attracted high quality coaches and other football staff - it will take time.

Can't be silent on this. The club needs to come out unified.
Truth is , it really doesn’t matter what we do - apart from winning a game. We’re down, we’re being kicked. It’s life. It’s hard to take but it will continue until we do something about it - on the field. We all know that, surely. While we persist being a total basket case, the focus on us will increase exponentially.

Much prefer Kingy's approach of standing up and being counted. It's actually when times are tough and you're losing that you don't let scumbags like Roos, Wilson, Robinson, Cornes and Barrett start rumours and walk all over the club and coach. But either way, it wouldn't matter to Wilson if we'd improved and had won games. She'd be just as critical of Clarkson and trying to destabilise the club by starting disunity rumours, just as she always has whether we've been winning or losing.

Not a fan of us hitting back after every little hit piece, but I do think the number of commentators and journos all but saying we should have tanked last year is getting close to a line in the sand moment. Not that we should make a big deal of it and make an official statement, or even very quietly inquire if the AFL is happy with it's accredited journos doing this (that would just get leaked then we'd be mocked), but some of our representatives pointedly bringing it up in interviews is probably close to being on the table.

It's a very silly talking point that they keep pointing to. It would be one thing to say "gee it sucks that they're in this hole yet a singular victory cost them this bloke", but when they talk about it as us making the wrong decision then it's a completely different matter.

As for Caro's article in particular? Pfft. Didn't read it. chatGPT could have written it for all I care, and that's as much credibility as people should be giving it.

It wouldn’t matter though, would it - if we were winning. It’s all just pointless distraction to get us nuffies riled. Why stop doing something that, obviously, works so well? 🤣

VERY left-field but the Atlanta Braves post the John Schuerholz era and pre the Alex Anthopoulos era went from perenial contenders to basket case with on- and off-field drama gallore, which felt a bit like what the Roos went through pre-Clarko.

With a Front Office (Frank Wren) that was in conflict with the Manager (Fredi Gonzalez) which led to a history breaking collapse in 2014 (and cost Wren his job), to then John Hart and John Coppolella orchestrating a scheme to get around international free agent signing bonus rules (sign two guys, pay them the same, but have a deal where the 2nd guy gets cut and gives his money to the 1st) which led to Coppolella being banned by MLB, to the current state they are now where they are once again competing for the division title year after year, and winning the World Series in 2021.

I see a lot of parallels with the Braves and Roos in how they went from always in contention, and probably should have won more when they were at the top, to a fall and bottom that seemed endless, to putting the right people in place and building through young talent. Hopefully the wheel turns the same way for the Roos as it did the Braves.

It would because win-loss doesn't guarantee you a free ride with the AFL or the public - ask Melbourne's comms manager. It's not about riled up punters, it's about them trying to wedge our footy bosses and Clarko, create division where there is none. And get the AFL to watch his every move and punish him at every turn. Wins would not stop this. These people hate him.

If you can, you may have already done so, post the audio of Luke Hodge speaking about Clarko, just prior to Kingy talking about Roos’, and how Clarko’s strength as a coach was to provide encouragement and also dish out tough, fair criticism when required and the Hawthorn racism saga has now made him second guess everything he says and does. He also spoke about him needing someone very senior around him to pull him up when necessary.

I’ve said it before, as have many others, the effect that has had on him is huge and cannot be underestimated.

Fair enough.

Braves won the 2021 World Series (WOOHOO!!) thanks to a number of astute/lucky trades after they lost a number of players to season ending injuries, including future NL MVP Acuna Jr, and replacing them with seasoned veterans. We haven't been as lucky with our trades over the last few years, although I don't think we can fully judge the success of these trades because we have been a lot less competitive than the Braves ever were (only twice did they fall below 70 wins) and are digging ourselves out of a far bigger hole. :)

Agree, just gotta keep walking the path and ignoring external noise. There will be another 18 months of potshots, just get used to it, theres no sugar coating and shortcuts are what put us on the bottom of the pile to begin with.
