Latest news and rumours

Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

WCE are so into Warner for next year. It's why we will fight tooth and nail to get Hawks first round for next year.

Money not an issue for Graham. I'd say his contract will be heavily front loaded with Darlings and Barrass money coming out of the cap of which WC would have budgeted for. Next year a lot of front ending contracts will occur so WC can pay Harley and Chad.

Honestly does anyone want Baker?

As a cheap acquisition sure, but it's such a funny situation in which we're the ones pursuing him yet it just feels like a problem to be accommodated. In every hypothetical situation, making Baker work is the sticking point. I'd be perfectly enthusiastic about getting 14 and something else for Barrass and going to the draft with 3 and 14, or splitting 3 and taking three early picks. But no, we also also have get all twisted up working out how to give up some of that to get Liam Baker in.

While working through performances from this years Futures game, it was pointed out to me that I hadn't done any of the 2023 Futures game featuring the 2024 draft crop.

Finn turned in an excellent performance in this game back in 2023, making draft watchers all the more excited about what we might see from him in 2024. He showed his elite evasive skills, athletic traits and sticky hands, as well as his penetrating disposal by foot.

"Some clubs wanting to slide will target St Kilda's picks and some clubs wanting to come up in the order will target St Kilda. I think picks 7 & 8 is a great position in this Draft."
@CalTwomey

Would we be happy to part with 3 for those 2 picks?

I have said before that the top 10 picks in the draft should be sacred every year. The AFL like you said have made a mockery of it. They should have no say in FA compo.
I have a different idea. AFL should determine the compensation but AFL should contribute only 30- 50% of it and the other 50-70% should be paid by the receiving club (with the flag winning club paying 70% decreased to the wooden spooner 50%). In short, FA should not be free but should be subsidised.

There's no doubt he immediately improves our team, the problem has always been the price at a time when we all want to draft deep.

It's a bit annoying that he said a farewell at his B&F and it's now a formality that he joins us, like now if we don't somehow make it work then we'll look like the bad guys in this situation - and coz we're automatically handicapped in attracting players to WA due to the distance and the fact that we stink right now our recruitment will want to make it work and it feels like they may do it at a detriment to our overall recruitment for the year.

It's far less than an ideal situation IMO. I hope they can work out a way to make it work that doesn't push us backwards in the draft too much.

If it's just 3 for those 2 absolutely

If it's 3 and 14 I wouldn't be keen

Cal also loosely tied us to Bo Allen.

With his Essendon hat on, said he would offer pick 9 and future first for pick 3 in hope they get in front of the Kako bid.

I know it was very loose link but imagine how bad it would be walking away from this trade period with
Bo Allen (pick 11)
Baker
Graham
Pick 31……

If we slid back from 3 to 6 for Baker it would probably leave us with a choice of Langford, Travaglia or Smillie, assuming Adelaide take Draper.

I'd be happy with either Langford or Travaglia at 6.

I think Langford could be the perfect foil for Harley as an inside midfielder, he projects like a Josh Dunkley type and his kicking is seriously damaging.

Travaglia has all the attributes we're sorely lacking and would be a good choice.

Alternatively

If Adelaide took Langford which they well could, i'd be very happy with Draper as well.

Sliding to 6 probably looks like this? With the below in the mix. Should be Jagga or Langford available, if not TT. But that's still a pretty significant drop, let alone dropping to 7 or 8

Jagga Smith
Harvey Langford
Josh Smillie
Tobie Travaglia
Xavier Lindsay
Harry Armstrong
Alix Tauru
Bo Allan

If Jagga slides to 7 and we can get him and Tobie at 8 I’ll go do cartwheels down St George’s Terrace.

Doubt the Saints give up those picks and doubt Jagga slides that far but I hope you’re right.
