Latest news and rumours

Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

This!!!! He's a ****ing big bodied near 300 gamer, who is our second highest scoring forward going to a club that's been gifted first rounder picks out the ****ing ass. Club is gutless and has no third perspective.

I think of it like the Sam Mitchell trade to us, when he came here for nothing. These guys have been such good servants of the club that if they can get an extra year or two elsewhere you let them go. He’s not really worth anything. He was probably going to play wafl then retire.

Exactly.

Imagine you've given your club 300 games, tried your heart out in a GF where your peaheart teammates shit the bed, then the club refuses to let you go to your destination of choice, despite playing 2nds most of the year.

Take your points but it’s also pretty hard to run a footy club when blokes are tying to opt out of contracts, regardless of whether they are B22 or depth. Signing a long contract comes with risk for both parties but if an exit can be agreed to that suits both player and club then great.

We finally have an A grader who wants out. Trading away whatever we get for him to another team for one of their OOC players makes no sense especially when we are rebuilding. Get as much as we can for Barrass and pay as little as possible for Baker. Keep pick 3 (or split it into 2 top 10 picks) and hold on to the Barrass pick/s. JTB in the PSD and win the trade week.

I love how Darling started the year at 'terrible and should consider retiring' and ended the year at 'we should have got more for him at the trade table'.

And none of that was based on considerable performance. His pressure inside 50 was good, and he had one great game and a few other decent ones. Was solid enough. He started with a creeping feeling with the rise of a Waterman breakout, Oscar back & a young Williams improving steadily that he was moving a bit down the order. Very true.

He ended the year with a 2yr deal and a trigger for a 3rd and saying he might kick 50. Definitely more valuable currently in their setup at least on paper. It’d be pretty funny if he does! Could be the final twist in the tale

I think that’s what we did. We got cap space and a late pick for a Champion bid. Don’t think he’s worth much more than that.

Getting the feeling Richmond are going to either fold late, or hold onto at least one of Rioli or Bolton.

Doubt Freo cave and Richmond are going to have to give up something good for pick 2/3 that they apparently seem desperate for.
Yep fk the Tigers.

Let’s remember these are the same carnts playing the “good faith” card when they were risking losing an uncontracted Callum Coleman Jones (lol I know but still) for nothing to North.

North could and probably should have picked him up in the pre season draft for nothing but instead handed over an early second rounder.

I'd rather give midfield minutes to Hutchinson/Hall. Dev blew his chance. His best bet would be trying to get to Richmond now.

Yeo - half back rotation
Reid tick
Tk - tick
Hewett - restricted minutes as mid, foot issue
Hutchinson - 1 good game, unproven
Pick 3 - becomes 6, slides to 8 pick Travagalia
Baker - half back
Graham - tick as quality depth
Hall - raw unproven
Dev -------- 10th in line?
Sheed - cant feel his foot, retires end 2025
Culley - may be traded. Is more a HFF pinch hitter

Is that really midfield depth?

Trade period should start a week after FA starts but only go on for 2-3 days. The clubs/recruiting teams would have close two week prior to get all the dealings done.

It used to be 4 days, right? Then clubs started complaining it wasn't long enough to get deals done so they stretched it out to 2, and now it's too long coz campaigners be procrastinating.

I actually can’t see how they have a problem if they are allowed two weeks to deal with each other leading up to a two day period. Drafts in late Nov too so they don’t even have to have fa/trade period straight away. Perhaps push everything back till mid October and just have a two day window to get it done

We could take advantage of the stalemate and grease the wheels for other trades

3 + 26 to GCS for 6 + 13

Barrass to Hawthorn for 14 + 33 (they trade their F2 to GCS for 41 to stay in the second round)

F2 to Richmond for Baker

Leaves us with 6, 13, 14, 33, 62, 67 + Baker

GCS flips 3 to Richmond for Rioli + F2

They said they would use him differently or a different role...but he was also slowing down...getting dropped would've been a little humiliating and a red flag for him re future.

Don’t think the pick 13 stalemate will go on. Port, Pies, GCS will get a deal done, something like

GCS OUT: 13, Lukosius
GCS IN: Noble, F1 (COLL), F1 (PORT)

PORT OUT: Houston, F1
PORT IN: 13, Lukosius, Richards

COLL OUT: F1, Noble, Richards
COLL IN: Houston

I would love a pick 6 stalemate where tigers refuse to straight swap Rioli. Would go in with F1 for 6 and 23. Would love to include Liam Ryan and they can keep 23 but have their F1 coming back.
