Agreed. Someone posted North are super keen on McKercher and I was surprised.

They have loaded up on mids and really need some talls at bothe ends. Caddy or Curtin. For such a low pick a tall forward you would expect is more likely than a defender.
Agreed it makes sense for them to pick a tall but they picked Will Phillips when Logan McDonald was staring them in the face last time, so I wouldn't put it past them to go for another mid.

They also got Coleman-Jones to plug that hole and while he hasn't done much so far, he's still fairly young. Perhaps they're considering McKercher as the final piece to their midfield, as well as picking him up due to the academy connection?

Id argue Curtin and Logue are too similar in size also. Are either Curtin or Logue gonna wrestle with Max King long term or do they need someone taller and stronger? Id say they would want someone taller then Curtin.

Long term if we think they need to spend pick 2 on a KPP, then they give Ben McKay the money he wants and let it be

I'm not saying they're not.

But it's not like Sydney have been out spruiking in the media for Barrass, so how do we know they're going hard at him?

Just so you know Sydney can't come out and say they are targeting Barrass as it's during the season and it's against AFL rules. If they were there would be serious repercussions. As it's in regards to trading the most likely is a 12 month trade ban.

With Tom's personal situation unless he is chasing another flag and his Mrs is happy to go to Sydney (this is actually reasonably likely) but his mum would as a first time grandmother would be pissed.

The top key defenders are all heading over 2m. One reason JD can have a hard t ime.

I think Curtin is only Top 2 if he makes it to 197cm by draft combine with his current form. Logue is 191 btw, Curtin at last measurement was 195.

No, it's not worth trading next years pick to get Reid + Curtin even if we lose Barrass and even if we can guarantee we get Curtin. Next years top batch of mids looks a class above this years. I would like a guaranteed shot at 1 of them and potentially 2.

Now lets say Barrass goes to Sydney. I've already shown a way to get their top 3 picks but lets be more conservative and say its 5 and 22 for Barrass and we are paying a significant part of Barrass salary.

If we could get the trades done I would make a guarantee to GC not to bid on Jed Walter trading picks 19,22 and a swap of future seconds for pick 6.

We keep pick 1 and we keep pick 5. We promise the bulldogs not to bid on Croft and offer them pick 6,36 and 38 for 13, 16 and their future second. Pick 6 gets them a pick in before croft but it may need to be a trade on draft night. (36 + 38 pays for a croft bid at 13 or at pick 10 with their 2 late points picks)

1. Reid
6. TBA/best available (If Curtin somehow gets through to this pick i'd draft him there anyway)
13. O'Sullivan or Wilson if we got Curtin at pick 6.
16. Delean
Trade
NGA (Livingstone)
NGA (Hine-Baston)

I have a feeling from inside the club the cull will be deep but not as deep as we think. Trew, Winder and West will go but they are only Rookie spots. Culley if he gets a 2 year deal will have to be upgraded to the main list. Say the club stays with it's conservative nature. Barrass, Hurn, O'niell, SPS, Foley, Clark, L. Edwards only gives 7 list spots. 4 for those picks top picks, 1 for Culley and 2 for either NGA matches and 1 for a traded in player or FA. (remember even if we empty the rookie list 1 spot is already taken by Maric)

If TB wanted out then one of the best outcomes for the Eagles from trade week would be that we were in a position to take both Reid and Curtin and bid on Walter at pick 1&2.

I have the Swans finishing 5th last on ladder predictor. Now that’s not a given and others will have different predictions but for this case I’m going with it.

Nth currently have pick 2 in the draft and then return at pick 45. If the AFL gave the Tin Rattlers no further assistance and Nth retained McKay then surely they would like to get back into the draft in the second round. Even if McKay went and they received an end of first round selection it would still only give them pick 2,19,45,51,57.

If Nth were after McKercher there is a possibility that Nth may be open to trading down to pick 5.

The other benefit for the Eagles would be the play off with the Suns for not bidding on Walter with pick 1 & 2 and give us an opportunity for the suns first.

Suns give pick 7 1751 pts
Suns get pick 36 & 39 ( plus Eagles won’t bid on Suns players) 2407 pts.*

A three way trade between the Swans, Roos and Eagles might look like .

Swans get Barrass
Give picks 6,23

Nth get picks 5 & 19
Give pick 2

Eagles get pick 2 & 23
Give Barass & 19.

Eagles take 1,2,7,23,53,55 to the draft.

Eagles Reid
Eagles Curtin
Suns. Walter
Hawks Caddy
Carlton Watson
Nth McKercher
Eagles Duursma
Suns Read
Dees. Sanders
GWS. Edwards

We could even split the Suns pick for a pick in the teens and a future 1st and grab Ollie Murphy a future Barrass replacement.

For Example

Dogs give pick 15 and future 1st
Dogs get pick 7.

* suns 2407 points is worked out by difference between pick 1 vs pick 3 minus 20% discount plus picks 36 & 39 added in.
I think they would have to take that offer.

Geez guys

I'm so proud.

All of all these three team multi pick swap trade ideas just brings a tear to my eye.

I don't think we're going to trade Barrass but it is fun to think about what we could end up with in this draft.

Barrass + Salary cap for 5 + 22
19 + 22 to Goldcoast for 6 (plus promise not to bid on Walter or other academy)

1,5,6 sounds pretty f*n good. I can't remember many teams having something that tasty a draft hand.

Imagine if the draft fell our way and we ended up with something like the following.

1. Reid (WC)
2. Walter
3. Caddy
4. Duursma
5. Watson
6. Curtin (WC)
7. McKercher (WC)

Would take North going Caddy over Curtin. Carlton looking for a small forward in Watson and Hawks being gun shy about taking a WA KPD in the top 5.

North can take McKercher at 2 and Curtin at 3 as they are thinking they'll get that as a compo for losing McKay.

Or as I had heard McKercher is in Norths NGA academy and they may be pushing for the AFL to allow them to prelist academy players in instead of getting a priority pick deal.

North should just fold already

Doomsday scenario

North win spoon, get 1st round compo for McKay and the ability to prelist NGA in players

They end up with Reid, Curtin and McKercher

If I were WCE, I'd just exceed the soft cap as I wished, refuse to hand over a cent to the AFL and take it to the supreme court :thumbsu:

Question for Monocle WCE_phil AsterixTheGaul as you’ve seen more of Curtin than most

Assuming we finish last and ignore the Vic media campaign to save Harley Reid and draft him with pick one. If the opportunity then presents to trade our F1 to also draft Curtin should we pull the trigger?

Keys I would be reluctant to trade our F1 for Curtin this year ( and that hurt typing as I am a massive fan of him ), as our midfield still needs a lot of work and the mids available next year early in the draft, already have my attention : Smith, Smillie and Draper in no particular order.
I am expecting our first round pick to be in the first four picks next year,

The only thing that would change my thinking is "IF" and it's a massively big IF , Curtain came back to Claremont and blitzed it as a midfielder.

At this point in time I see Curtain as being an A grade defender at the next level, with occasional cameo roles elsewhere, given his versatile skill set.

I actually don't see him as a KPP, he is only 195cm and unless he has a significant growth spurt, I see him as a very attacking and accurate HBF.

IMO he will be very much in the Grant Burchell style, having the ability to also use his run and carry to bring the ball deep into the attacking area and deep into the forward 50.
With his sublime foot skills any forward would be licking their chops at the thought of that sort of ball delivery.

Sadly I think at this point in time we have to pass on efforts to get Curtin in this draft ..... bide our time and lure him home latter. 🤞

As things stand with picks right here and now I would like us to back ourselves and just draft the best player available and I think we all know who holds pole position.
I am confident that with our two second round picks we also get good players.

Our drafting in 2021 and 2022 has been encouraging and the group of kids that we have drafted in look to be a solid start to the rebuild.
We are IMO only half way into our draft centred rebuild and the success /or not, of the 2023 & 2024 intake will go a long way to determine just how quickly we are able to turn the shit show around.

We really should forget about Daniel Curtin if you ask me.

Lets just pile up salary cap room and offer him a mill in a few years time
Trouble is, once you leave Perth and live in either Melbourne or Sydney you realise going back to Perth doesn't have the same appeal.

Speaking as someone who moved to Sydney and would never move back to Perth.

The flip side of that is I left Perth and worked in Executive Positions both in NSW, Vic and then in Europe and moved back to Perth with my wife as the lure of grandparents around for my kids and Perth as a place to raise a family came up trumps.

Melbourne in particular was a wonderful city to live in, Sydney not so much as I am not a fan of traffic jams ( aka car parks ) and massive crowds.
I also found Sydney people very money centric and greedy bastards ..... which is understandable as the cost of living in Sydney is astronomical.

I will acknowledge that Perth for many, may well be a tad bland after the variety of whats on offer in Melbourne and Sydney, but the Perth lifestyle suited my family well and the City has served us ( Adult kids now ) very well, plenty of opportunities to carve out a pretty good life and still make some serious coin here as professionals.

So the players in their early 20 and teens, sure hard to lure them home, once they have a family that can change very quickly.

Is Curtin to North something you’ve heard on the grapevine or educated guess based on compo pick? Was under the impression they really liked Caddy

No nothing at all, was just responding to those questioning why North would be all in for McKercher when they need forwards or backs.

Sydney is a absolute hole. Spent 4 weeks for work once in Sydney CBD and was tempted to kiss the ground when I got back to Perth

Always depends on the person you are and life circumstances though. Its not a catch all answer

That's the issue though. Who wants to lure a 28 year old home on big coin? We want to be in the ear of the early 20's players.

Not saying they won't come back, but it's not as cut and dried as just assuming they will. Feel like we've made that assumption on a lot of WA players and it hasn't aventuated (other than Kelly, who needed family support).

Can imagine moving back for grandparents is a big appeal. Issue is, as in my case, you marry a Sydney girl and have kids with them, their family is here (additionally my mother and brothers have since moved to Sydney).

You haven't lived in Sydney then.

I live in the inner west (Rozelle) and it's an amazing place to live. Barely use a car as so walkable, lots of parks for the kids, lots of pubs and cafes for the wife and I.

Yep Rozelle is very nice.
