Why? We went interstate with 3 picks in 2022

Just where the WA kids are ranked around the later picks we hold. At that stage in the draft players get closer together in rankings so the go home factor may tip the scale to a WA kid.

I like the look of Hall and Hardeman. They look like they can wintheir own ball. Both did well in the champs. Sanchez I havent read much about but the power rankings mentioned he added some real energy and impact with WA.

If we get the Swans 1st Id love a Reid Sanders combo with 1 and 6. Or a Reid Wilson, Wilson takes Gaffs wing.

Mark ‘Robbo’ Robinson has written an article in the Australian proposing that Essendon go after Oscar Allen, throwing ridiculous money at him, and offer the Eagles their next two first round picks around 10-14.
Plus, and this is the best bit, they could throw in Kelly (Jake, recycled from Adelaide) or Hine.
He suggests Craig Vozzo as the Essendon insider with knowledge of Allen’s contract could provide them with leverage.

And this guy is supposed to be a credible football journalist?

If the club did anything like this it really would be ‘fold the club’ time.
Selling our most prized asset for two mid teen draft picks and Kelly or Hine?
It would be time to storm the barricades and force regime change.

Imagine if we'd traded JK after 2010

Hall is a possession monkey. You can get away with his disposal if he is as physically dominant as Cripps or Fyfe, but he's probably not going to be that. That leaves him being a high possession getter with dodgy disposal. These players typically hurt their own teams. The more they get the ball and butcher it, the more the team fails to execute their game style.

Lets say we get Reid. Reid, Hewy, Ginbey, Culley. All those guys can get their own footy. We probably need a Redden type, and draft another in case one is a spud and/or Reid ends up forward. We're in no rush. We'll have quality picks for the next 2 years. Our top picks for the next two years should be KPF and mid. At some point we'll need some outside X-factor - which can be with a low pick 2, or as we climb the ladder, with a pick around #10.

Anyone with questionable ball skills should pretty much have a line put straight through them.

His value is 2x top 5 picks. Even then, I wouldn't trade him. Good KPFs are so hard to get. Way more than half the KPFs taking inside the top 5 end up duds. They're hard to pick in the draft, and just genuinely hard to come by.

Culley is the Redden type -- at best. Or he's a bust.
I disagree. He showed some forward nous this year which suggests he may have a few strings to his bow.

And Vosso would be breaching confidentiality if he used inside knowledge as leverage.

The way Oscar is carrying himself this season it just says future captain. And Im not refering to his form. You can see how much he is encouraging others and leads by example. He also speaks very well, clearly switched on and knows the game. He spent much of last season sitting on the bench or in the box to keep learning and contributing.

Untouchable.

And we only draft WA kids?
No. But if you’re balls deep in to Curtin as the person I replied to has mentioned multiple times now, this gets you Curtin and Reid.

Edit: if you can get Curtin another way, while keeping pick 1 and your future first, more power to you.

It's one of your worst hypotheticals I will say, though I understand the point you are trying to make - not that we should, but that's what WOULD get it done.

It is also a shit idea.

So on a slightly different note been a lot of talk about a clean out of fringe players this season.

Jokes and player bashing aside could any of them generate later picks say in the 3rd round on?

Or could a player help land a bit of a pick upgrade especially with clubs that have nga's or FS bids using up a pick in the 20's or 30's.

Players that may have a small amount of value:

Petrucelle
Witherden
Waterman (pre illness)
J Jones
Rotham
Cole
H Edwards

Aim being to improve either this years or next years draft hands. Possibly a player swap with Hawthorn or Carlton.

Maybe, maybe not. We don't know how the cards will fall for any of our young midfield recruits yet (although I'm bullish on Hewy).

We just need to draft in a group of mids and see how it settles. Let's say this year we take best available and with our 2nd/3rd round etc we take a KPD, and fwd or def flanker, etc. And then next year we take a KPF with our first and do the same with the later picks again. In 3 drafts time we''ve going to have some sort of indication as to how our midfield is shaping.

But Clay Hall, hard pass. You want a bull to be able to find the ball and win the clutch contests, and mids with elite decision making and disposal getting high possession counts, and a Redden type being defensive and making it hard for the opposition (you don't want this player getting 30+ every week).

Yep and essendon is a good example of how hard KPF are to find. They haven't had a great one since Lloyd left them 13 years ago.

How come at draft time everybody, including the media, knows which kids certain clubs prefer or intend to draft with their first pick? I would have thought it would be better to hide your intentions and plans if you were a club. Even to the point of making a fake show of interest in some kids we are not interested in just to sow doubt and confusion. If we do have a real hard on for Curtain then lets not make sure everybody else knows about it.

Maybe that's what we're doing
