Dusty is on 1.3 million and will more than likely play 300 games next year.

I think the Allen 'story' is clubs desperate for gun KPF and are trying to shake anyone loose.

You're overthinking it.

Also doesn’t hurt to have us overpay to keep given the war chest we are going to have for the next few years if we manage our player payments well.

I suspect this rebuild we include a few big name returns in 2025/26.

Some moves that I believe could shape our list for the better.

Darling
Is still okay with decent supply but no use to us at his age. Especially if he keeps younger guys out of the team or restricts the attraction for someone like Georgiades. Obvious trade would be to the Dees but JD seems like he would prefer being out of the limelight in QLD/NSW. Would Sydney be interested now without Buddy and a young FWD line?

Braydon Preuss
207cm, 120kg human wrecking ball. The two brain cells that he possesses are used to hurt oppo players and get suspended. Injured all year, played his first VFL game last week, shared the ruck for 20 disposals, 26 hit outs and 11 clearances. Out of contract and behind Briggs and Flynn. Would allow BW to play FWD/Ruck and give us a year to assess the English option. 28 years old, genuine enforcer that we need with recent retirements and a young list. If an oppo player KO’d one of our kids Preuss would let them know about it unlike our players did with Hewett…

SPP
May have missed the opportunity now that he is thriving in Port’s best 22. Still could dangle the carrot of some midfield minutes. Good age for us and another tough player that would stand up for his teammates.

Georgiades
Good second tall for OA. But Darling would need to step aside ideally, especially with BW to develop more as a FWD and JW in the wings.

Dev Rob
Seems decent but pure inside mids are a dime a dozen. With Sheed, TK and Yeo still going around, and Ginbey, Hewett, Culley and Reid all playing mid Dev is not a necessity but I like that he’s a couple of years older than our kids and would at the very least provide better depth than guys like Clark, West, Trew and XON.

Brockman
Indifferent. If Flyin left then could be handy for cheap. But otherwise Long, Cripps and Flyin can hold the small FWD fort. Noted Cripps is coming to the end.

Gaff
Looks cooked. Honest chat to him around playing WAFL next year and he may accept a pay out. If any other team would take him then great.

Sheed
Got 43 touches this year in a loss but he is a genuine plodder. I would happily swap him for Matt Crouch or just play our youngsters. But I don’t see another team wanting Sheed so he will continue to plod.

Leadership
Darling and Gaff have never shown a huge amount as leaders so I doubt they would leave much of a void. We would still have senior players/leaders across all lines.

Back- Gov, TB, Duggo, Yeo
FWD- OA, Cripps, Flyin
Mid- TK and Sheed (although not the most vocal leaders) and Yeo when not in defence.

Draft
SPP is the only player I mentioned who we would have to trade anything inside pick 50 for. The others are either late picks or walk to the PSD. Any additional picks we could manage (eg Darling if we paid his salary) need to get bundled for the GC pick. Take Reid and if the top end of 2024 draft is all VIC metro sooks then trade our F1st with North and take McKercher as well. Then hope Curtin slides to GC pick.

Note on BW
If he can show some FWD craft next year and we end up going for English, I could see the Saints coming for BW to play second ruck to Rowan Marshall. BW was drafted from Sandrigham and the Saints have spoken about targeting local players in draft and trade. Hopefully by then Barnett or another draftee has started to show a bit as I don’t rate Jamo. Keep Preuss to show English how to throw his weight around.

Possible 2024 team (players in brackets if they stay vs their replacements)

FB: Cole Gov Witho
HB: Yeo TB Duggo
C: Hough Kelly Reid
HF: BW Georg(Darling) Long
F: Cripps Allen Brockman(Ryan)
Foll: Preuss Ginbey Hewett
Int: SPP Hunt JJ Sheed
Sub: Dev
EMG: Culley Petch Maric Rotham McKercher/Curtin (Gaff)

A mate just mooted an idea. Why don’t we keep Simmo on as a development coach or some such role. How would that affect our salary cap if he took a pay cut. I thought it was a great idea.He could mentor our new coach if he’s not highly experienced.

Wouldn't be fair on a new coach coming in.
He's either coach or he's gone.

Why on earth should he have to take a pay cut?

No good having the dethroned king hanging around like a bad smell when you have a new king.

Pay the money and get on with it.

That would be like my boss tapping me on the shoulder and telling me I'm now the receptionist and my pay is being cut in half. Not sure I'd be hanging around for that when someone else will pay me my worth to do the job I'm good at.

But that’s you!

Don't mind most of them except for the Gov one. Govs should only be a 1yr extension but they did this early in the year and have just been hiding it all year so not much to be done about it unfortunately.

The rest are fine.

None of those 4 should be on more than 1 year deals… shows we have learnt nothing about just clogging the list and letting the credit boys choose their terms

2 is just so incredibly unnecessary. They arent going anywhere, so just give em 1...
The past 3 seasons total embarrassment of the club should remove any form of 'goodwill' with senior players

Think Williams should have been given 2.Hes shown enough to warrant 2 years.Still young and will only get better.Has done well considering he lost so much conditioning with that
Injury.

Gov I would have only given 1.Too injury prone at his age to give 2.

Cripps no problem giving him 2.Showing no signs of slowing down.

Petch I would have given 1.Hes too inconsistent for a player 4 or 5 years into his career. We need him to step up.

Thankfully Williams is just a single year. No more multiyear deals for late picks that aren't slamming down the door.
As a 19yo tall who's been handy, I'm surprised he's not been extended until the end of 2025.

Would have been happier with that than Petruccelle.
