Totally agree with we need players now.
Who are they??
Warner.
Ward: who is OOC and behind an outstanding midfield/can play inside and out and has upside/22 and plenty of upside.
Rivers: RFA 2027, moved into midfield back end of 2024 when Petracca was injured, did really well and mini developed him last year at Melbourne, WA born, connections, same age as Warner. If he is a future A grade mid throw everything at him.
Flanders: RFA 2027, behind Rowell, Anderson, Miller at GC just! Inside/outside mid who is about to explode if he hasnt already in 2024, high footy IQ and a hard edged but classy ball user, explosive. Sam age as Warner and 8-10 year A grade mid. Sell the farm almost/use all available future assets to get him in!! Build our clubs midfield around Reid, Warner, Flanders and Hewett.
Yeah was more talking about the draft pick/player and players through there. Using the Murphy Reid pick rather then delay it a year (hawks f1)

If they were so adamant they wanted the Baker trade done it should’ve been the Hawks future first for him.

We need players now and not in the future. Most would’ve been happy with Bo and Murphy Reid for pick 3 rather then the outcome we got.

But I have no doubt they were preparing themselves for Chad Warner. If reports are right and he told both WA teams he will becoming home after one more season and he told Simmo he wants to play with the Eagles and Harley, you can see why. Plus I believe Baker and Warner share a manager so that explains Dons comments about bigger picture and honouring our commitments ect.

Issue is now that all might not happen and we delayed a critical stage of the rebuild. Now it’s fork in the road sort of stuff.

Freo on the other hand had the option to trade the Murphy Reid pick for a likely future top 10 picks off multiple clubs (Roos and Bombers apparently) but didn’t bite, which is interesting if they thought they were a chance of Warner and/or Kossi. Kossi they can probably still get done. I’m not sure Swans do Chad for late firsts with the drafts so compromised or Chad does that to Sydney. If he leaves which if it was 90-10 to leave at the start of the season, could be 70-30 to stay now.
M Reid Bo Allen and baker would be much better then what Aspired last year

Im just saying, we have spent picks 14, 31, 8, 14, 29, 1, 38, 49, 16, and 46 on mids(at least players who played mid/wing in their u18 years) in the last 4 drafts. Thats 10 picks over 4 drafts.

4 of those in the first 14 picks of their drafts, ordinarily thats the type of stuff you can build a midfield around. Theyre even all 4 different types of mids that would have complemented each other, our picks just havent worked out as we wouldve liked - yet(except maybe Chesser lol)

We did start trying 3 drafts ago, is my point

Agree no point in chasing Warner too hard unless we keep Reid, but it might be a damage control sort of thing the club tries to sell the fans, "we swapped Reid for Warner" which id understand. The club needs to get off the bottom of the ladder now, rather than in 3-4 years time from a business perspective.

If we Let Allen go for an early pick(pick3), got 2 firsts(1 top 5 + 1 top 10) + a f1 from Essendon for Reid, then turn pick 3+bombers f1 into Warner I think thatd be an ok result for a rebuilding team that needs to sell hope to the fans and sponsors

Swapping Allen+Reid for Warner+a top 5 + a top 10 pick wouldnt be awful, still have our pick 2 + hawks 1st too
Find an inside mid from somewhere with our 2nd rounder and draft with the rest of the picks
Picks 2+4?+8?+hawks 1st is a good hand

I think thatd be a fine outcome
agree with your analysis of WC picking mids in the last 4 drafts and they are different types and your picks we have used to get them.

There are 2 parts of this imo: we have Harley, Hewett(who will be fine with some games), Ginbey ended up an elite HB already and some others look to have decent ability.
The problem with a draft only strategy is it takes a very long time to draft a squad let alone an elite midfield!
50% of draftees either don't make it or end up role players in different positions, which is ok because we will get some decent players out of our draftees the last few years.
WC needs to nail 2 elite mids in the draft this year and next to add to the up and coming crew, top 5-10 type mids that are 200 game player types.

The second part: the abundance of young talent waiting to develop means WC are in serious need of elite talent mids ASAP in the 22-25yo bracket that are either elite or ready to break out to fill in the massive hole in our midfield and getting bigger the closer Yeo and Kelly get to retirement.
This strategy should be using our abundance of draft capital over 2025/20/27 if we have to entice a player and club to leave and become the next premiership midfield for WCE!
This needs to be done in 2025 and 2026 at the latest.
Using our draft capital and cap space into forward years massively reduces risk and gets instant reward on known products imo, better business.

Warner, tick!
Flanders, tick!
Rivers, maybe next.
Ward, maybe next!
Hopefully land 2 or 3 of these types of targets.

No trade must be done unless we get atleast Dyson Sharp (pick 1) for Harley Reid.

This isn't a ****ing game of who can get more picks. It's about getting guarantees superstars for Harley.

Dyson Sharp is Matt Rowell Clone. A clone legit. Floor of Matt Rowell. The only knock could be perhaps his breakaway speed. But he he knows how to be first to the ball. Our mids don't

Passing up on Matt Rowell clone is unforgivable. You look at Fred Rod he still has alot to prove in my eyes. Can he prove himself as a first to the ball type player.

If we need to a straight swap Harley to Pick 1...We need ****ing sharp

I think Hewett has more upside than Harley personally.

Looks hungry and has energy and nous.

Just hasn't clicked

Say we manage to score Warner, (which i think we should target)
And let's say Harley signs a 2 year extension.
Let's also say we finish bottom 2, maybe even last. Take sharp with pick 1 or next best available mid.

I would like to think our fortunes drastically change and the whole list and attitude rises. I feel there would be new confidence and hype that the players also buy into which lifts the spirits of the club like we saw last year when Reid ran out every week or when nic nat came into the game and turned the club around.

This is all in dreamland and alot has to go our way for this to happen, which not much has gone our way since before covid.

Of course it would (maybe throw Darcy Cameron in too) and at one stage it was probably on track to happen and might still but probably looking more shaky with last rounds game and with every lose like that but plenty of time to turn it around.

Yes it would be nice to pick up Cameron also.
As has been mentioned before, maybe it was Warner who rang Simmo and said he wants to play with Reid.
Reid is young and hyped up, some kids just take a year or 2 to realise there full potential and that it takes alot of work to become a cousins or Pendles that trains behind the scenes and outside of 'training '

Harley is a generational talent, remember without the suspension last year he would have won the Rising Star Award by daylight.
He is in his second season and clubs have worked out they can get inside his head with a bit of push and shove and holding on all the time.
He also has had an interrupted pre-season and still needs to develop his elite talent into elite standards.
Hewett is an elite talent bottled up in someone who is busting to play after his year out with injury, he passed with good measure against GC imo.
I couldn't help myself going back and watching the game again and Hewett had an almost day several times, and several elite disposals, put another 20 games in him and he looks like he will be the elite player we all think he can be, or better.
Hope he stays injury free and we see the best of Hewett.

Hewett doesn’t have the ceiling Harley does.

Hewett’s ceiling is very high. A grade, all Australian etc.

Harley’s is generational GAJ type ceiling.

Potential is just that though, potential. Not everybody fulfills it.

There is a world where Hewett becomes the better player. The more likely scenarios though is that both become very good players, but Harley is just a bit better.

Apologies if this has been presented before, but what would people's thoughts be on getting Ben Hobbs, who I believe is out of contract at the end of this year.
Is a pure inside midfielder ( https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/ben-hobbs/ ) and is being played out of position at the Bombers as he sits behind the likes of Durham, Caldwell, Shiel, Tsatas.
His stats at AFL level are questionable for an inside midfielder but once again this is because his being played on half forward flank.
We could offer more money, and more opportunity in the middle in his preferred role., and it could be a shrewd acquisition.
Yes, we'd like Matt Rowell is an inside bull, but we are not going to get him. A case could be made for Hobbs as a low risk potential high reward return
(And YES I know his not a great kick, but his other skills are things we need in a midfield)

We had the chance to draft him and opted not to, from memory, as he was a flight risk. Maybe he's grown up since then but there's no shortage of Vic clubs who would pay as much as us to get him in.
