I read it as a justification of the end result.

We didn't rate the draft with the lack of exposed Victorian form would be reworded to 'there is still a lot of high end talent available regardless of exposed form' if we held a draft hand similar to GWS, Melbourne, Collingwood etc (going to ignore the top 10 picks as we haven't had one for ages).

If the recruiters really think this draft is too hard and there is no talent then we need new recruiters (I don't think they would say that, albeit it is very likely they would say it regarding round 3 onwards). But with the deeper pool, exposed form and limitations on academy matching there is no doubt 2021 picks are of much higher value.

It was an easy answer to give to the media, without boring them with the finer details.
He could have also mentioned that the academy picks means trading into the 2020 draft (rather than the 2021 as we did) would yield overall much later picks.
Or that we have a lot of contracted junk on our list that can't be cleared until end of 2021 due to reduced salary cap pressures this year (which is why so many have been put on 12 month contracts. We have flexibility next year).
That letting go Hutch, Vardy & Ah Chee would have left very few mature bodies on our list outside the starting 22.
Or that we're in our premiership window and developing kids is not a priority in 2021. So adding to our youth when we can't even get games into Brander, XON, Cameron, Petch, Foley or Williams is pointless.

I don't think he was necessarily justifying the decision, just answering a question in an over simplified way. Not all footy fans are tragics like us BF folk.

Its telling us to temper our expectations this draft.

Obeanie1 my good friend I would say with draft picks 62, 86, 91 ....... it's safe to say that expectations are already well and truly tempered.

Only way we trade back into the draft IMO, is if someone really slides on draft night. i.e. we had them at 20 but is somehow still available at 40.

No doubt the spill for whoever we pick at our pick will be, “omgz over the moon, we had him much higher on our board”

As long as we pick up the next Tim Kelly, Dean Cox and McGovern in the Rookie draft all will be good.

There is no rookie draft this year. Actually I might have my wires crossed on that due to a poorly written article!

There's always some highly rated players who fall late or don't get drafted at all.

I don't mind the late picks this year, it's a good year for it. I'd still rather we picked up 2 players rather than 1 though.
there's also always that "one" player that goes undrafted for whatever reasons. (I.e., Pickett, Stack). Maybe we'll take a punt on one of those.

Has there been any west coast bigfooty pub meet ups to watch a game previously? I'm keen to do one next season

It is probably also a little bit of keeping draft night strategy up our sleeve also.

Saying 'we really rate the top 20' isn't conducive to getting a great draft-night trade deal for a top-20 pick (whereas now, if something comes up we can call the bluff saying we don't need to pay overs as we don't really rate the draft).

I still think there is a better than even chance we trade in or up the order at some stage (using a future 2nd or 3rd as well as 62 - wherever that ends up at the actual time of the trade, as when it gets into the 50's the points attached to it might actually have some interest for certain teams).
