I'm in favour of taking the risk on Phillipou. I think the bust factor is low and even if he doesn't turn out to be a elite echelon midfielder his size is going to make him a bit more versatile than a similar risk on 184cm inside midfielder that haven't shown as much as dusty/walsh/rowell etc at the same age.

More importantly however is if we were to decide Phillipou was not our guy, I'm very much in favour of telling Adelaide he is our guy and what is on offer for you to secure him by trading up to 2? We'd drop back behind one team, likely GWS and Essendon who don't have great needs for the inside midfielder we're looking for so I think if Wardlaw/Hewett if they're our guy is still there. Phillipou is a really good fit for Adelaide, who don't have a player of his profile. They've recruited there nuggety small inside mids like Berry and have some key position players developing. I'm also with the sway Riccuito carries in this town i's very likely it is him who has made the call to try and hide him. Potentially could land us their pick 23 and send them Rotham as a sweetener.

Where is Nelson hasn't played for a while not injured ??
I think you are all under-rating Nelson , is a good size started his career before Duggan and looked quality just has lost his poise and confidence .

To Saints , North or Hawks as depth maybe .

I think half of the under-rating is tongue in cheek and the other half real. Personally I think he's a perfect depth player - ideally he's not best 22, but great to come in and fill a spot for a game or 2 at a time to cover injury.

Damn, now I’ll never find out why dropping Schofield, Vardy, Jetta, Hutchings, Masten etc in the last few years doesn’t count as “some sort of precedent that he would be prepared to play our senior guys in the WAFL”.

Every single one of those guys you named were fringe players at the time they were dropped. I presume we’re talking about senior guys like Darling, Gaff, Cripps, Shuey and so on.

I fall into your second category. He is neither a midfielder nor a good defender. Moves in straight lines only.
He is the sort of low ceiling player that we need to be moving past. If we can get third round compensation for him we would be miles in front. If some other team can use him, even get more out of him, then good luck to them and him.
Hopefully it’s his last year as an Eagle.

"Recruiters from rival clubs are monitoring Jackson Nelson and his future at West Coast, with the 26-year-old reportedly seen as obtainable."

Not saying he is obtainable but lets also say that he won't have any issues getting a ride to the airport.....
Not only would I drive him id even throw in a polony sandwich for the flight...

Ideally we can turn Nelson > draft pick > better player - and that should always be the goal with fringe players. There's obviously a fair bit of hyperbole with him on here though, and those posters tend to ignore that ideally he shouldn't be getting a game but occasionally you need shit kickers to fill in and hopefully the players around them and the game plan don't expose them for being too shit.

I like the idea of Phillipou and the potential upside. Looks classy and can make things happen. However I think we need a player who can win his own ball but also accumulate around the ground. Ashcroft would be perfect for this but likely off the table.

How does Warlord go around the ground? Is he purely a coalface type of player like a Rowell or can he spread and run to get some ball around the ground like an Oliver?
He says he models his game on Oliver so I presume he has good hands in close and likes to extract but whats his spread and run like?

Our mids all seem to be low possession type mids (apart from Gaff who does nothin with the ball and maybe Sheed) and Phillipou comes accross as that low posession / high impact player.

“Ideally he shouldn’t be getting a game” but lamentably he’s played 100 games which is far more than a fill in or down the line depth should have played. The selectors have had an unfortunate propensity to pick him often. I couldn’t understand what they saw in him. Very early in his career he looked like he might be a decent player but regressed from that point on. Was exposed as a very average player.

And this takes us into the circular argument that Simpson never drops senior players, none of the senior players that get dropped count because they’re fringe players, the thing making them fringe players is that they get dropped, so he doesn’t drop senior players except for the senior players he drops.

And so on.

Exactly.

Phillipou and Sheezel can both win their own ball and are maximum damage around the ground.
It's one of these two for mine, closely followed by Wardlaw and here is why I would prioritise them over Wardlaw;

Culley brings a serious contested game already, added with the fact I think a good contested mid will be there at our first second round pick; Szybowski, Hollands, D'Aliola or Ginbey. Better to go the good balanced midfielder with Xfactor early, and get the more contested midfielder later, as if you went Wardlaw first it's much harder to find a good balanced midfielder later.

As extracted from the Eagles‘ site:
