It was actually Jarrad Branders availability that stunned us. We took him as we had him as pick 4 in our mock drafts, then took Allen because thats who we actually wanted with pick 15 and he was still around

We moved the goalposts to get Brander as opposed to Allen pretty much

Splitting hairs.

We were targeting a tall and were stunned to see not one but two quality tall's available at our two first picks. Both players slid down the order further than we expected. IMO we would have been happy with Allen at 13 if Brander was gone and then Kelly at 21 but both were available.

.

Would need a crate of mangos going back the other way you would think, maybe even a watermelon as well.

Could do a Visy

Dustin Martin joins Eagles on a 5 year, 200k per year deal and as part of the deal he will receive a ambassador role at the State Govt recycling centre on 3 million a year

When we picked Brander we had no way of knowing Allen & Waterman would come on so well. That Williams and Edwards would show so much potential. With all draftees, but especially KPP, you need to assume some won't make it. Taking possibly the 2 highest rated talls made perfect sense at the time, rather than taking only one of them and the 18th best midfielder in the pool.

We don't necessarily have too many talls. Darling will be 29 early next season. If Allen is the JK replacement and Waterman is our 3rd tall, there's a slot there for Brander as the JD replacement.

Josh Kennedy did not set the world on fire in his first 3 years , 2006 -2009 single figure goals per year . Was servicable next few years and was the biggest downhill skier , Flat track bully of minnow sides like GWS and Gold Coast and a few others made him look better with big tallies and then went missing against good defenders . He really hit his straps in 2015 when a lot of our players did . I think we need to temper our expectations of Brander . KPP can take while . Guv and JK certainly did .

Agreed.

What we do need to do however is decide if he is a back, or a forward - and allow him to develop there. (he doesn't offer enough outside of athletic attributes in the midfield)

I do think he could slot into the backline quite well - duggan moves up to the midfield (and Cole may do so also, he was quite good on a wing when moved there). Brander (and Rotham) are quicker and more agile than the standard KPP's - so he may be able to play a 3rd tall role (and step up to key position if required when Gov or Barrass get injured or suspended).

The problem is we do not have any room to play him as a forward and he wont to wait another year in the magoos.

How can we play JK , Darling, Waterman , Oscar, Brander and Williams ( Needs games in asap) all in the same forward line? Everyone complains we are too tall but adding in Brander we are even taller.

Temper expectations?

Brander isn't Tasmanian though........ ;)

When we finally play him, and ideally in a Key Position and not in the sacrificial Marsden wing role, i'm sure he'll go bang.

Currently as far as the selectors go he sits behind Rotham and Edwards in defence, and Waterman and Allen in attack. So please specify who does he replace? And when? Or does he sit in the WAFL until Gov and TB retire, or JK and JD retire?

Seriously, right now he is surplus (and from Vic). We have no decent trade picks. Gotta give something to get something.

No shit.

I think you'll find the majority of the board has been saying this for a long time, this isn't new.

Kennedy deciding to sign on again for another year has stamped Branders papers as tradeable for mine. I'm deadset against him languishing in the WAFL for a 4th season, like he has for his first three. It really isn't going to do anything for his development, there's a time when state league competition isn't enough.

However i would play him ahead of Ainsworth in any goddamn position on the ground.

Assuming Darling plays another 3+ seasons, which seems likely to me, does Brander not have a permanent position for that length of time?

He's pretty expensive depth...

I was actually low-key pumped when we picked up ainsworth. His highlights were epic. **** knows what's happened since then.

Yeah agree. From Branders perspective, there's little incentive to stay unless he and the club have faith he will play regularly over that period (on the wing...lol).

But from the eagles perspective, if we trade him out, who is the JD replacement? Do we bank on drafting someone & developing them in time, do we hope JD plays well into his 30s, or do we bank on Allen & Waterman being enough?

Rotham seems to have the speed and agility to play small. We could even use him predominantly as a running defender. I guess we could develop brander in the same way we developed Schoey. Schoey really stepped into a key defensive role towards the back end of Glass’s career and really became successful when Simmo bulked him up at the end of 2015. What I’m saying is that we should slowly build Brander up to play CHB .

not the worst idea as Gov is just about pushing 30 and the time he should retire, Brander will be in his peak.

I don't think any clubs would be guaranteeing Brander games in 2021.

For the next 12 months, at least, he would be in the same situation whether he left or stayed.

He would get instant games at many clubs i'd have thought?

It's only because we have an embarrassment of AFL quality tall forwards (JK, Darling, Oscar, Waterman) that he isn't getting a look.

He's plenty good enough.

I was actually dead set pissed off when we picked up Ainsworth. His highlights might have been good but his low-lights were plentiful. I sense my feeling was being at the games live and watching him closely differs significantly from a highlights reel. I went back to my notes from the carnival. Yes there were ticks but there were some massive crosses. I also wrote "lacked pace - the Hutchings crab at the contest" and "he is an overager". Not what we need was take away.

Difference would be another clubs would play in a KPF spot in the seconds, we are still gonna trot him out on the wing

Yep, Brander at a team like North, Adelaide, GWS (with the players they are losing) or Sydney is going to get games. The potential is there for him to turn into a very good player.

The potential is there for him to be a good player with us also - but games will be harder to come by (especially in his best position/s).
