Unfortunately what you want won't really matter when multiple players become infected in the coming days/weeks. It's a matter of when not if.

I was not arguing that they should play if players become infected. I was simply saying I would prefer that given the options between not playing, and playing in an empty stadium (while the players are healthy) I would always pick the empty stadium option.

Agree. If any of these contingencies take place the winner will always have an * next to their name. The AFL just trying to make the broadcasters happy.

To be fair, I still don't consider Sam Mitchell and Trent Cotchin to be Brownlow medalists because of that *. I'd prefer as much of a season to go ahead as possible.

I'm actually surprised by the amount of people in this thread who seem to be so adamant about cancelling the season. What else have I missed in the past 48 hours? Is it suddenly far more deadly? Have thousands more people presented with life-threatening symptoms? This is a serious question, because i'm firmly of the belief that until such time as there is a legitimate tipping point, you do ahead as per normal. Life has to go on. If the mortality rate was anything above 10% i'd firmly be in favour of cancelling bloody everything. Is there new information suggesting it will get this bad?

Some matches could be of a shorter length than others in order to play more games on less breaks

Teams may be allowed to add players to list , whilst other are rested.

I think the AFL should be trying to have one match a day instead of having the matches on weekends. Leave Round 1 as is and then change the fixture completely.

I think the keep the season going without crowds is the sensible solution at this point

You don't want to be wishing ill on anyone regardless of how much of a dead set flog they are. Surely if Dutton gets it, the entire cabinet now needs to be quarantined.
dutton getting infected is surely a sign its spreading within australia. even before coronavirus, he wouldnt want to get close enough to someone from asia or the middle east to have caught it.

This overreaction is going to cost us our damn quality of life!

It's not the damn virus that's going to make our lives harder to live, it's the damn panic itself!

Since DECEMBER 2019:

Total infected: 134,560
Dead: 4,972

BUT!

Take away CHINA - and Italy + Iran (rare anomalies) THEN,

The stats worldwide since DECEMBER 2019 becomes:

Total infected (not dead, infected): 28,575
Dead: 357

TO PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE:

The population of residents in St Kilda is 28,141
The capacity on a 1969 typical 747 airliner is 416 (with a rare max load of 660)

We are losing our shit (and things that we enjoy) over mere nothingness!

Not really, it’s all non serious until someone you care about falls ill and dies, then you’d be crying about not enough precautions

Entertainment is massive when dealing with global or domestic depression/illnesses. It’s literally a way for people to feel something other than fear. I’m alllllll for the games going ahead without crowds. I’m also fine with games being cancelled but they should be coming back the second it’s socially viable crowds or no. Sport/entertainment is massive for health.

I mean it's got a low mortality rate for most people... old people and those with preexisting conditions+smokers? prognosis not so good.
But above all the effort is concerned with prolonging the infection period with a smaller peak - so as to avoid hospitals being pushed past their limits and allowing people who need medical attention to receive it, which is the absolute biggest threat in this situation - the only way to achieve that is to implement methods of social distancing/quarantine.

Cancelling the season without knowing how long this will last would be premature. They'll look like ***** if they call it off and the situation improves. Better to play some games in case they can salvage the season.

Maybe they should look at reducing teams to 16 a side as Clarko suggested in case squads are hit?

If they do end up cancelling the season there might be an opportunity to play a proper State of Origin competition at the end of the year instead.

Those are the numbers that have been diagnosed. There is a difference between being diagnosed and being infected.

Mere nothingness? If these games where to go ahead with crowds of 80k plus can you imagine the spike of people infected? Could you imagine the amount of people needing hospital beds? We cant afford to let it get out of control because we don't have the resources to cope with mass illness/infection. Have a think about yourself or your parents or the sick and frail because they're most at risk of death. You don't care until someone you know dies.

your logic is flawed, the pandemic is only just beginning, it is genuinely pointless tallying up the # of infected outside China since December.
