Because to follow that thread to its logical conclusion we'd have to stop everyone from coming in, because people who are travelling from Iran, China, Italy, South Korea etc also travel to and from other places.
Every case in Aus so far has come from one of those countries. If we made the call we’d have zero cases and much more time.

time is the key to finding a vaccine

True but if you're visiting family or travelling for work you can't just be abandoned.

The way these things spread you are never going to see a country the size of ours have zero cases. The world won't just stop.

Anyone care to explain why we haven’t shut the borders to the major countries infected?

We more of less would have zero cases if we did that.

WTF is so important about letting people travel from Iran or South Korea here?

Unlinke other countries with major manufacturing industries, the Australian economy is completely underwritten by the services industry (67% of GDP).

A portion of that is international students coming here to study, 500,000 of them P.A, who bring around $32b to the economy. It also contributes to 5% of the countries employment.

That's a small example.

The fact we are also an island that relies on Asia as a major import and export route for supply and sale of our natural resources and agricultural goods is also why we simply can't just shut off Asia.

Unless you want the vast majority of the country to go broke within a couple of months.

Lol, what will the economic downfall be if we have to close uni’s and sporting events.

Great a UNI gets their money though

Uni's and Asian students might not seem important to you, but their existance employ a shitload of people in this country and put food on the table across a whole range of sectors, including knock on areas like construction, engineering, manufacturing etc

The international student industry is roughly 70% the size of Australia's entire tourism revenue and roughly the same size industry as Australia's agricultural industry as an example.

Unless you think something the size of Australia's entire agricultural industry should just be shut off?

I guess once they've checked in they're required to pay up, even if schools and universities end up being shut down.

No, it's actually called a functioning society.

But yes, just cut off the majority of Australia's revenue source, which around 70% of the country's populations employment relies on.

You were talking about panic earlier? No food, major increases in unemployment and mass defaults given the staggering size of Australia's house hold debt.

Yeah, would be awesome, but it's just purely about money....

Which is why the universities are currently offering large lump sum cash $$$ incentives for those Asian students to get here in any way they possibly can, including flaunting travel restrictions.

Obviously important but you bring in Chinese students your are almost guaranteeing a massive outbreak here.
Countries are canceling uni, school, events....

yes we still have students but at what price? The whole country might be forced to stop.

IMO government has been more or less resigned to the fact we're going to get hit for a while. Their focus will be on managing the fallout. They're doing their best to provide accurate advice, but the advice is always going to be a step or two behind the virus, like drug testers trying to catch dopers.
Travel from Italy mind boggling still allowed.
If they banned Ferrari, Melbourne would probably lose the GP.

Does anyone know how many people have died from other illness' this past week globally ? not that anyone cares or mass panics about that right ;)

Baby formula now toilet paper, doesn't take a genius to work out what's going on

What do you mean from 'other illness''?

The only relevant statistic is the amount of deaths from contagious diseases....

Death from cancer, heart disease, MND etc is irrelevant as you can't transmit it from person to person, meaning it can't grow exponentially once it grows across borders (which it has begun to).

I look forward to you still running this line in 2 months, when there's millions infected and tens of thousands dead.

Even if everyone does get it; a big if at this point, even Spanish flu wasn't caught by everyone; things that can slow the spread allow time and may allow for the build-up of cases to not swamp the health system as much.

Exactly. The virus is out and now we are in management mode. Govt's just trying to slow it down to a manageable level so as to not overwhelm the health system and hospitals.

Boss said this morning chances are in 12 months we will have all had it to some level but we are all under 55 so chances are it won't be a major problem. Keepin g it away from our parents in their 70's is the issue.
