Rioli is being traded for pick 6

Houston is a far superior player to dan rioli.

So... GC would be over paying for Rioli.

Not sure why hanging your hat on another clubs trading here.

Fair value for Houston would be around pick 8-15 for mine. Maybe a favourable swap of later picks too

Newman - 31 years 8 months
Docherty - 30 years 11 months
Saad - 30 years 2 months
Williams - 30 years
Cincotta - 27 years 9 months - rated so highly by your club he's on the rookie list at almost 28 years old
Boyd - 26 years old - also rated so highly by your club he's on the rookie list at 26 years old

Add to that the fact that Wilson hasn't even played yet and could be a complete bust.

List management is about operating on a three year future forward window. So what will Carlton's halfback situation look like in three years time?

Newman, Docherty, Saad and Williams will be retired or close to the end and Cincotta and Boyd aren't good enough to be put on the main list.

So really, the real reason why Carlton don't want to pony up for Houston is because they thought that they would be winning a flag by now - Paddy Dow drafted with Pick 3 in 2017, Mitch McGovern traded for in 2018, Newman traded for and Kemp drafted in 2019, Saad traded for in 2020, Cerra traded for in 2021...

So what they want to do is address a future need (replace their aging half-backs with an elite kick) while still retaining a draft pick to address a current need.

The problem is, Port probably has exactly the same needs as Carlton does (as seen by the fact that we have played Narkle, McEntee and Evans in the forward line of a preliminary finalist over the course of the year), so the idea that we would even entertain accepting Pick 12 over Pick 11 in any transaction is absolutely delusional from a Carlton perspective.

What an awful assessment 😂

Stick to what you know campaigner

Why should Port accept “fair value” while Richmond get overs for Rioli, when we paid overs for Soldo and when we paid overs for an ooc Esava after being rejected the year before?

We always pay overs. It’s time Port actually gets overs for once, and Houston is the exact player they should take a stand on.

if Melbourne circle around and chase Houston, I'm done with my club. Even some dees supporters seem to be delusional enough to think that this would be a good decision. A future 1 is going to be a top 5 pick next year. We need to go full rebuild.

We've lost Neal-Bullen, and bringing in Tom Campbell and Wade Derksen. For heaven's sake. How has Tim lamb still got a job!

Yeah, let's trade in a gun because we think we're in the premiership window despite Oliver going off the rails, Petracca disgruntled and will be a distraction all year, May slowing down, Gawn a few years left, still no key forward to help Van Rooyen. The fact that we even chased Houston should mean that Tim Lamb should be instantly sacked.
No, no it won't.

We barely got a top 5 pick after being destroyed by injuries and losing Brayshaw right before the season.

Your analysis of things are god-awful.

You that but they seem to.be trying to move a lot of pieces around to make it work
Not trying to hard we won't deal pick 11, if pick 12 is obtainable for a F1 and chips and that satisfies port we will grab him otherwise we tried and move on to filling the real holes in our list.

Port getting their knickers in a twist over the offer tells me Houston isn't very keen on staying but that is their problem

Well considering I do not have a seat at the trade table, no idea. Kinda up to list managers to decide what is fair.

From an outsider looking in:

Pick 11 + F2 for houston and f3 or 54

Noting that Houston is contracted, no need to trade.

Cannot really see Houston pushing the needle for Carlton though 🤷

Carlton position seems to be we don’t need an elite HB so won’t pay.

Question is why bother pursuing a player and then putting forward a trade offer which is so far unders it could never be accepted.

Blues should just move on. They look like tyre kickers of the worst kind.

If gc would accept port and Carlton's future second for luko I could see port doing that.

Port
Out Houston and 54
In pick 11 and luko

Carlton
Out pick 11 future 2nd
In
Houston pick 54

Gc
Out
Luko
In
Port future 2nd Carlton future 2nd

This is why Carlton have been crap forever.

There is a real opportunity to add a genuine A grade player in their prime that will elevate their list and they baulk at paying the price.

Instead they overpay for genuine plodders.

This is your Shaun Burgoyne 2009 moment.

There is no way they accept that. The steak knives need to be like pick 20.

Given how this has started it does seem like he either needs to get comfortable with playing for the Roos or staying.
Or go back to his original trade request of Melbourne for 2 first rounders

This is a really ordinary take.

Was it meant to be satirical? I’m not going to bother picking it apart if it was.

Carlton position seems to be we don’t need an elite HB so won’t pay.

Carlton’s actual position seems to be we want Houston but we also want to keep pick 11.

I can’t really fault that. But I do wonder how we see it getting done.

I dare say the fact we are chasing him suggests we do see a need for him.

Calm down - the trade period hasn’t started. The club is clearly exploring all options to get a deal done.

As they should be.

The rest is just fluff.

Should be an easy trade. Pick 11 plus steak knives. But because of the teams involved, it won't be.

The thread should be fun. Hopefully we can find out know how old he is and how many AA's he has.
Hopefully a port fan can also inform us of how many years he has left on his deal and how that exponentially increases his trade value. Surprised no one has mentioned that yet.

Yeah either Carlton aren't serious or they think we'll cave to an insane degree for a 2xAA with 3 years on his deal.

I suspect if they genuinely want Houston, they know that it's pick 11 and more. I also suspect a deal will get done because we usually get our deals done.

Pretty sure Houston is the one who has pursued Carlton.

Port normally get their deals done. The only obvious recent one we haven't gotten done was Ratugolea the first year, but Geelong's asking price was insane, and we got him a year later.

We're not pursuing him. He's pursuing us.
