It’s funny, but in the US they officially weren’t for a long time. The concept of “race” is purely abstract, so it accepts all kinds of distinct classifications. “White people” were Protestant.

There has been a process of “whitealization” in America, which has seen the concept broadening over time. Now, Catholics can be considered “white.” The current tendency is for it it to embrace all Asians, Hispanics (which, like Catholic, isn’t a race at all), and even Western Indians.

That wouldn’t be bad, but it has a lethal flaw: it can’t reach the Blacks. So, in the end, it doesn’t solve anything; and it may makes matter worse over there.
