That's a good read (and doesn't appear to be paywalled).

Worsfold believes Cox’s ability to connect with his players will be a feature of his coaching.
He’s authentic, has high values, is a good person and made other people feel important. He wasn’t transitional with his contact with people. He always made them feel like he was enjoying time with them.

Tony Micale (his first coach at East Perth and former WCE asst coach) ;
“He will be an outstanding coach. He is a strong character, he doesn’t suffer fools,”

He has a great imagination, but it is his strength of character as well.

“They are a super, super football club, but he will add another dimension to the mental side of the game. Dare anyone knock John Longmire,
but they won’t be beaten by big margins in grand finals. I think he will really tighten that aspect of it."
It's paywalled to me

Cox must of read BF focusing and planning on addressing our weaknesses.

Time will tell if is successful
I reckon it’s not rocket science and if you had asked Horse, he’d have said the same.

I am tempering my expectations on Cox for the time being.

He is saying all of the right things, and he's shown a particular willingness to deviate from Horse in some areas already, which has pleasantly surprised me. (To his credit, he's done so in a way that makes clear that difference without disrespecting or casting blame on Horse in any way. A difficult balancing act to manage, but I think he's done so nicely.)

But actions speak louder than words. I think Horse, or any half decent coach for that matter, would be able to look at any given team and identify their strengths and weaknesses pretty quickly. Horse was one of the drivers of us going after another contested mid at the end of last season, so the problems weren't lost on him, and they're clearly not lost on Cox, either.

Having the solutions to the problem is where Cox has to, and hopefully can, prove himself.

Horse recognised the need for more contested strength in the midfield, but when the time came to make a decision between, say, the game-breaking Warner and a contested mid in Adams, he went with Warner. When the time came to make a decision between, say, one of his many classy outside runners and a contested mid in Adams, he went with his many classy outside runners.

There's no guarantee that just because Cox recognises the issues we have and the areas we need to improve in, that he won't show that same inability to prioritise it at the expense of a better, "flashier" player. ie. Making a really tough call to get the outcome he wants.

I will say that Cox acknowledging forward pressure and a stronger front half game as things he wants us to be better at, and then being part of the drafting of Dattoli with our very first pick, is a promising early example of action, not just words.

Would you seriously have played Adams before Warner in GF?

Yeah, I remember Horse getting slammed on here for commenting on our some of the losses saying the team's pressure wasn't good enough. How Cox is talking aobut how he sees isn't hugely different from how Horse did to my eye. Time will tell, I guess.

The question will be how they went/go about correcting the deficiencies.
Animal training is based on positive reinforcement of desirable behaviours. In this case we would be talking about rewarding those bringing the pressure and the flip side would be replacing those who don't.

Absolutely. But until that point, the messaging is essentially the same as last year.

I won't speak for others, but for me personally I suppose the main difference is the goodwill the two coaches had/have.

Eg. When Horse spoke about our contested struggles or lack of pressure, it was extremely frustrating to hear because I felt like he bore a lot of responsibility for those issues (for reasons I've commented before and won't do so here, lest another thread be turned into a Horse-bashing palaver.)

Cox may end up being ten times worse than Horse, as I mentioned above ^, but until he proves that, he is just a neutral entity whose words can at least instil some hope and optimism, if not confidence yet. Because whilst I don't know if he will improve any of the issues, I do know he is not really the cause of any of them.

I would have thought one of the perks of being the head coach is that you can delegate the dirty jobs to the minions...

Hopefully this doesn't end up being a meme in the swans season images/gifs thread at some point in 2025.

What do we reckon the positional shifts may be? (NB: not selection changes, positional changes, which seemed to be what Cox intimated).

1. Logan to defence
2. Blakey to attack
3. Florent to attack
4. Mills to inside mid
5. Sheldrick to inside mid
6. Amartey to ruck as well as forward
7. Fox to defence (horse barely played him there last year)

1. No

3. No
4. Maybe
5. Hope so

1. McLean dropped, Amartey 2nd ruck duties
2. Snell to play round 0 - just need to start playing the kid like we did with Melican when he first started out.
3. Mills midfield
4. Warner starting games in the forward line
5. Sheldrick into the best 22
6. Stop the defensive roles ie James Jordon unless absolutely necessary
7. I'd give Warner Jnr 3-5 games in a row to see what he can do.
8. Campbell half forward/wing
9. Adams never to play best 22 unless major injuries
10. Need to give Ladhams some games, Grundy rested after each 5 games
11. Focus on best toughest midfield set-up for us
12. Lloyd to never do fullback kick-ins for us again.
13. Get some fresh ideas into the coaching box
14. Manage players better, force breaks on them
15. Focus on forward pressure and goal kicking accuracy
16. Keep Horse away from the squad
