Regardless of what most of us think of Robert Walls, his comments regarding Carlton's woes were spot on. Kicking skills are a crucial aspect in why Hawthorn are where they are, why Butler keeps being given a game at the expense of Brennan, and why WC have not lost a great deal with Ebert's defection.
I think Ebert's defection, when combined with the fact Swift and Stevens haven't shown that extra gear, has hurt us. It means our midfield has no second tier.

Post-2007, we invested heavily in rebuilding our midfield through the draft. And those three players represent midfielders picked at 13, 20 and 22. We're not getting value for money there.

And I think that, when you look at our current midfield, that shortfall hurts us. Sure, we've got Kerr, Priddis, Shuey, Selwood, Masten and Gaff. But they've come up pretty short sometimes this year and there's SFA after them. And you can trace that back to the fact that we picked three young mids with decent picks post-Judd - the guy who came on quickest is no longer at the club and the other two can't get regular games.

Agree. Ebert if only for tackling pressure. I never cared much for Ebert, but a second tier would be pretty handy...

I want one of

Coniglio
Jetta
Bennell
D Swallow
Rich
Yarran

Garlett
Banfield
Wellingham
Fasolo
Gumbleton

Obviously prefer one from the top group but would be happy with one from the bottom group. i think all would be in the best 22 and would offer a lot to our team.

1) You've missed Rosa
2) Ebert was only ever going to be depth going forward and realistically his departure has done nothing more than open up a spot that could be filled by a number of others no better or worse than him. Agreed he has shown more than either Swift or Stevens but he was drafted 1 year earlier than Swift and 3 years before Stevens - so he had age on his side. He also had greater opportunities simply due to the lack of midfielders operating 2007-2010.
3) I would be surprised if Eberts's loss is not more than compensated by McInness's entry.

I agree WC's midfield lacks both depth and quality. However holding onto a bona fide B grader does nothing more than reinforce mediocrity. Its why WC - IMO - wouldnt be too fussed about Steven's departure or in fact that of Smith, both easily replacebale in the sceheme of things.

I am on record numerous times questioning the wisdom of WC's recruiting in the last 4-5 years. Holding onto players that really arent the answer going forward does nothing more than magnify the error made of recruiting them in the first place.

If we can use Smith and Stevens to swap for players like Myers, Banfield etc. or get early 2nd rounders for I'd be happy.

I suppose I'm talking a bit more about the engine room than Rosa, Sheppard, Embley etc.

Reckon you're under-selling it.

If Ebert was doing for us what he is currently doing at Port, he would be pretty handy.

Maybe. Bit early.

Sure, but the fact that none of those three have stepped up and become, for example, the quality of Scooter, is the root of that shortcoming. In Ebert's case he's improved, but only after leaving the club.

did we get robbed in the ebert trade, we didnt get much. I think it will be a quite trade week for us guys

Smith - what's going on there? Until about halfway through the year I always got the impression he was a match committee favourite, but with Brennan jumping ahead of him in the pecking order things aren't looking too good.

Garlett and Yarran are interesting. Ratten said this week that some players got games when they didn't deserve them due to injuries. Some of these players would be carried by the rest of the team and maybe play a good quarter here or there but lacked consistency.

Sums up Yarran and Garlett pretty much doesn't it.

Will Malthouse want both of these plus Betts in the same forward line? Do they trade one whilst they still have decent currency?

I thought Yarran was a rebounding flanker nowadays?

he is. I doubt we will go for Garlett after picking up Hill last year, unless he is cheap/offered to us/requests to come to us. I doubt we will go out and chase him is what I am getting at.

Heard from my source that everyone is pretty certain Lynch will be leaving. It's a big reason why he didn't fly out this week, they reckon Pies have offered him a fair amount of $$$ and possibly a 2-year deal, which is what he really wants and he's already on board with it- this obviously hugely suggests Cloke will be leaving Pies as many of us suspect. Hopefully if it sadly happens we are able to leverage a deal for Wellingham.

Hey would like to hear what others think this guys chances are as a rookie pickup

Re: Clutterbuck - never seen him play, but statistic wise, he rips it up every week. Kommer is another midfielder out of East Perth who has really come on big-time. They both must be good chances of being picked up / hopefully one of them to the Eagles.

Unfortunately the vast majority of players listed in this thread have no chance of ending up at the club.

The players we would be willing to trade are not going to pick up A grade quality and opposition clubs are going to be more likely to hold on to picks this year with the strong draft coming up.

Free agency is unlikely to provide us with a high profile signing. Why would say, Goddard leave the Saints to join us when he could go to a Victorian club (that could be just as close if not closer to a premiership that us) for the same inflated pay and not have to relocate his life and family?

It is disappointing that it is doubtful that we will make any aggressive moves during trade week to address weaknesses in the squad.

Lynch will likely go to Collingwood under free agency - the best we can hope for is a bag of chips in a one-sided charity trade.

Boak is the player I'd love to see the club bring in but he will likely go to his preferred option Geelong in exchange for their Ablett compo pick.

Pearce or Moloney appear more realistic options however and could provide some added second tier depth to the midfield rotations despite not having that A grade impact we desire.

A player who in my opinion would fit in very well with our current midfield would be Nathan Jones, but I have no idea of his availability or what Melbourne would potentially want in exchange for him however.
