I give us a less than 10% chance of getting Dangerfield next year, pipe dream at best

Edit:
I'd give us 1% chance, and that's being optimistic!

Unless theres a go home factor it's going to be incredibly difficult for us to land a big name FA signing so the likelihood of us picking up someone like dangerfield or Cotchin is remote unless we put in an irresponsibly high/long contract offer

Stats don't tell the full tale on him ... he has a ferocious attack on the ball, and likely that is what Simmo sees in him.
Stats help though. We need skill in our team, not ferocious attack, he butchers the ball on the few times he actually touches it. We have patrick mcginnity who is a far better player that can fill that role. Would be very disappointed if we got him.

Agreed. There are enough Melbourne teams who are desperate that would be able to match, and beat anything we could offer, so they won't be moving west, unless they are WA boys.

This. How many non-WA players have we traded in over the past 20 years? The cries for 'immediate ballsy action' to flex our muscle and bring in a superstar are a bit tiring.

irresponsible?
Gazza, Buddy, Tippet, etc all go after big money - no go-home factor involved there.
Identify the player we want and throw everything at him. It's a great lifestyle out here and some players would take that + BIG money + the new stadium.

No harm in having a go!

Correct! We are a big club with big sponsors. We should start throwing our weight around instead of getting bent over by the likes of Port, etc.

Agreed. With all our money and wealth coming in you'd think the club would have a crack at a star player. Starting to think all this money just goes into executives pockets. :(

True.

Hawthorn and Sydney have also shown a propensity to develop late draft picks into guns. Smith and Hill and Hannebery and Parker for example.

It can't be denied it gives a huge jump start to competing at the top again.

Time for Shuey, Sheed, Yeo, Waterman and co to pull a finger out. ;)

These guys were hardly late draft picks though? All second round picks, which isn't really considered late, you'd pick these guys and hope that over 50% will become an AFL quality player. Parker and Hannebery both very highly rated in their junior years. Granted Smith came from no where (country footy to VFL in a year) and there were question marks over Hill, but he had the tools to work with. I feel like these guys were all well credentialed before they got picked up. We have gone with a few guys lately who have the 'potential' tag.

Sheppard, Smith, Swift, Notte and Weedon are all guys we have drafted in our first or second round who had 'potential'... the only one still on our list being Sheppard. A couple of highly rated juniors, but all drafted based on talent, not output.

In saying that though, we have drafted Gaff, Darling, Sheed and Shuey in recent times based on output. I just feel we should target the performers. I remember Luke Parker at the time being highly rated. How we slid that far I do not know.

It's more of a culture and development thing than you realise though. Thus why you can have a team of first rounders at Melbourne or a midfield of top five draft picks at Carlton and still get beaten.

That's a slap in the face. Essendon is an absolute shitheap at the moment, what with the court case and everything, and this bloke still wants to go there?
I know he was impressed with their training facility, our "state of the art 20 years ago" facilities and stadium may not have impressed. Shame, would have liked us to branch out in that direction, plenty of Irish over here, would have appealed to that community.

Incredibly difficult to get any of those players - look at Fremantle, they've had a decent crack at a number of players over the years and haven't had a great deal of success. Without the go home factor we'd have to put up a stupid offer that would run the risk of crippling the club

No club could hope to match the offer Gold Coast put in front of ablett
i would consider the 9 year deal Sydney gave Franklin irresponsible - it looks ok in the short term but they've mortgaged their future to get him
Tippett 2 years in looks overpaid

Sure sound out the likes of dangerfield but as fans we have to understand it's not as simple as putting a fat contract in front of him.

One question to those that watch WAFL and are more in the know. What ever happened to Jayden Schofield? He played games for the Bulldogs in year one and was impressive and now languishes between ressies and league for the Sharks?

Good point, surely the club would have talked up the new facilities though? Although in saying that his career could well be over before that new stadium is even finished (pending injuries and the like).

These new facilities can't come quick enough for our club.

Head not quite 100% committed to full time professional football. Has a fair amount of talent but has put on a bit of weight since returning to Perth and enjoys his weekends.

West Coast should have taken him to JB O'Reilly's for a couple of pints of the black stuff - biggest seller of Guinness in Australia (not just WA) - says a bit about the size of the Irish community ..... or maybe just how good a pint Paul keeps in that place!
