Yeah I know all the reasons being listed, it still seems a MASSIVE discrepancy. In modern day football you'd think its not that easy to pull the wool over every other team's eyes.

Hopefully it is the case though and he ends up a gun for us.
It is though.

Look how good Wingard has turned out to be, yet why didn't GWS take him? It's because he told them he would return to Adelaide. I think WC and Waterman have made their intentions known and no club is willing to risk a pick.

Are we expecting Waterman to play many games next year?

Yeah - I would say quite a few at East Perth.

re: free agency - wouldn't the best way to go it to remove picks from the team receiving the player. At the moment they get something for barely nothing (i.e. they like all other clubs might have their pick moved down one)

I assumed before it came in that the player was free to move to the club of his choice, not that the club receiving him would be able to improve their list for free.

I thought the idea behind Free Agency was that it was 'free'? No one would give up pick 3 for Frawley, it is such a flawed system.

It's technically "free" for the club getting the player and the player moving, it doesn't cost them a draft pick and the player can choose where they want to go.

The cost is paid by all the other clubs getting shunted around the draft.

It's stupid that Melbourne are rewarded a pick they would never get for a player that wants to leave their club.

I'd love for a club to troll another in F/S bidding by saying, for example "Yes, we'll bid pick 1 on Waterman... hehe suckers" therefore forcing WC to use their first first rounder on Waterman (even though clearly not worth that).

They'd be all like

That face would change when we make them take him with Pick 1.

They'd be all like "nar" and then the other stupid club would waste a first round pick.

You do Know they lost an established good player tho to the # 1 team .. Nobody jumping up and down saying Hawthorn have preferential treatment getting a player for nothing
If Frawley was up for trade Melb would get a second rounder.

This is the AFL being charitable.

I have added in the f/s - academy players (noting that Alec Waterman (WCE f/s), Josh Clayton (Brisb f/s), Jeremy Finlayson (GWS - academy) are in an unknown position as their team's last picks.

Scrap it or make the compensation far less valuable. End of 2nd/3rd round.
The top compo should be pick 11 mid first round pick after all non finals teams have drafted . Then the best compo a top 8 team can get is end of first round . This would make teams try and keep players whilst also getting reasonable compo !
