I know it is posted all the time, so take what you want of this...... I have the inside word that Varcoe will be an eagle with Schofield part of the trade!!!

Give me 48-72 hours before you bag me, but from what I've heard it's fairly probable with exchange of draft picks also involved (not sure of draft trades).

Time will tell, but please refrain from calling me a muppet (or worse) until Friday haha

Agree totally.

Jarrod Pickett
Connor Mendaue
Naika Cockatoo
Oleg Markov
Jarrod Garlett
Brendon Abbott
Mitchell McGovern
Sack of potatoes

Any of the above I would prefer to Varcoe.
Iam assuming Geelong will try push Sinclair for Varcoe, would rather trade Sinclair for another draft pick.
Or keep him on list.

Carter and Wilson need to be traded if anyone wants them or delisted, now we get Waterman for
our last pick. It means we need more picks in this draft.

Now I agree:cool:

Not very. But it does happen. Geelong have been good in the past when it comes to finding players late in the draft.

We know what we're going to get from Varcoe though, and it's very uninspiring.

Even a rookie spot for him would just clog up our list.

I agree it's not often, you have to get lucky or have some inside knowledge on someone, but I would rather take the chance on an unknown than bring in a known player who has a limited ceiling and I don't think really helps the team improve. Bringing in middle-aged (in football terms) mediocre players is a good way to stay ninth.

Like I said, I'm happy either way, not fussed.

I don't think Varcoe is a 'mediocre player' though and I think his ceiling is higher than you're giving credit for.

However this isn't a point I would bother arguing, unlike something like how much longer can Priddis be played. ;)

Always good to read other boards. Here's some Geelong thoughts on Varcoe.

Ahhh, a quote straight out of the Cyril Rioli defence strategy. :p

I'm not trying to pick a fight but it's easy to blur the truth to suit an argument.

- Varcoe played 3 good games towards the end of the year. Arguably 7 or 8 good games out of 23 for the whole year.
- Losing Trav from that middle age bracket can be offset by gaining Mitch Clark.
- For a guy that supposedly runs & carries, he had no games with more than 9 kicks (and had 1 such game in 2013). He's never been a high possession winner but surely to be a run & carry guy you need to get more than 6.6 kicks a game. Mackie (13.5), Birchall (13.8), R Shaw (13.4) are good examples. Can he make that jump at 27 years of age? I say a very faint maybe and that's being generous.
- He plays 2 roles. Variations of his forward half role of old and as a "run & carry" defender where, IMO, he hasn't proven himself to be good (yet?) at the defensive aspect. An important attribute. He also hasn't had what I call a match winning game in 2 seasons.
- Any bargaining power we have is limited because clubs know he'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season. As PO has said, if we get say Dangerfield (or any decent FA) and lose Varcoe we'd get no compensation at all as opposed to whatever pick we get for him this year.
- For every Gillies or Hamling taken in the early 30's, there is a Motlop or Christensen taken after then.

I'm not a Trav hater or anything, I'm fine if he stays. Just thought I'd play devils advocate. :thumbsu:

The exchange of draft picks is Geelong give us their 1st rounder for our 2nd rounder?

Re: Waterman sliding

Because of the decision of other teams not to bid on him?

That is the way I read it.

My memory was that he was being touted as a first rounder (even top 5?) and when the time comes to pay up no-one was interested.

I do hope every other team was wrong but I do wonder about the way we rate, and have expectations of younger players.

Swapping a backman, of which we currently have a plethora of, for a mid in Varcoe, of which we have a need for, seems fair for me. A straight swap only though. We don't lose too much in this trade.

Honestly, no idea!!! My source is from one of my best mates that works on radio in Melbourne. Left perth 3 years ago and is still a seated Eagles member over here with me (I get to give his seat to someone else each game).

He called the Yeo thing last year before it went down or really talked about much, so I'm backing him in!!!

Do I think is a great trade..... Not really!!! Will be ok considering Schofield is probably a fringe player.... Personally think it's win/win!!

Varcoe can give us what we need at best and Schofield is a fringe player as mentioned (although I am a Schofield fan personally!!!!)

That was my next question, wouldn't our pick be upgraded with this deal? We are surely not the ones paying extras? Schofield has more value than Varcoe FFS!!.

Yep came here to float a similar thing.
Does 13 + Varcoe for William and your 2nd rounder which is pick 32 work? Seems a bit in our favour maybe?

Other than what we know him for, what value??? He was a fringe player for us this season!!!

Personally would be surprised if that happens, but would be more than happy. Gut feel is Varcoe and Schofield fir your second and our third.

Think I second rounder might end up at the Dees for Clark though...

I can see some crazy 4 way trade coming to head - which is why the Pies want to put Beams deal to bed soon. If it's gonna happen.

On Varcoe: F-NO!
We get frustrated with Wellers, this bloke'll make ppl slash wrists. Never seen a bloke go missing so much, just doesn't have it upstairs, literally a once in a blue moon performer.

On compensation, it should be given by round (e.g. 1st round/2nd round compensation) and only ever AFTER the completion of that round (i.e. pick 19 being the highest). It means that teams don't pretend to want to keep players and will actually fight to sign 'em instead of the expected compensation. This is the system they use in baseball and NFL in the US and it takes the net difference of players signed and lost. Far fairer.
