There's a number of players in the mix that might still be available by the time of our first pick (number 11 for those who haven't been paying attention) some tall, some short and one possibly just right.

Obviously the likes of Petracca, Brayshaw, McCartin and Wright will be gone and likely Laverde and Lever won't last until our pick but the following players might still get to us depending on who GWS, Gold Coast and Geelong choose with their picks.

Jarrod Pickett (180cm / 76kg)
Pickett entered last week's combine knowing it was his endurance, not his sublime speed, that he needed to prove to recruiters. By surpassing level 14 in the beep test he did just that, and again performed well over the 20-metre sprint, recording a time of 2.87 seconds. Pickett most loves running with the ball, looking ahead and taking the game on. In his five games in South Fremantle's senior WAFL side to finish the year he played mainly as a deep forward

Lachie Weller (181cm / 71kg)
Although Weller's season wasn't as consistent as he had hoped, he still showed the things that make him one of the top midfielders available. He's quick, can kick, finds space and you want him with the ball. After a month off, he played his last game of the season for the Allies against the NAB AFL Academy on Grand Final morning. Every time he got the ball he arched his back and went looking for gaps to split. He also kicked two very good goals, one a bomb from outside 50 that speared through. He suffered bone bruising in his leg in that game, which ruled him out of testing at the combine

Sam Durdin (196cm / 87kg)
Durdin's up and down year ended on a good note by being named best afield in West Adelaide's under-18 Grand Final win. That night Durdin played in the ruck and had 48 hit-outs, 12 disposals and nine marks and moved all around the ground. At the next level he seems best placed to be a key defender, where he can use his mobility and strength in the air to hold down a spot.

Paul Ahern (181cm / 77kg)
Ahern put his hand up for the Calder Cannons in their Grand Final defeat, collecting 26 disposals and kicking a goal. Ahern glides through the midfield, going quicker than he sometimes looks, and then delivers with ease as well – his kicks telling teammates where to lead, and not the other way around. Has to close the gap between his outstanding games and the others, but has the pace and class to be a really good player who sets things up.

Jordan DeGoey (187cm / 82kg)
De Goey is a unique mix of competitiveness and class. It's what makes him an attractive proposition for clubs, who like his hard-headedness as well as his ability to provide some flash. He kicked three goals in the Oakleigh Chargers' Grand Final win, playing mainly as a deep medium forward, but he can just as comfortably be used in the midfield. Doesn't pick up big numbers of possessions but makes them count and is a natural footballer who goes at the ball.

Liam Duggan (183cm / 76kg)
Widely seen among clubs as one of the most impressive prospects to interview, Duggan is smart, articulate and genuine. As a player he ticks the boxes, too. Having started the year as a neat left-footed small defender, he has progressed to the midfield, and done well as a ball-winner and an outside option. Duggan finished the home and away season for the Western Jets with 30 disposals and 12 tackles against Gippsland Power.

Hugh Goddard (195cm / 92kg)
Goddard's end to the season should give him a boost of confidence after being moved around through the year. He played his best footy as a key defender, where he was able to lock down on an opponent, put a fist into marking contests and kick it long when the ball was in his hands. A big, wide-shouldered player who gives his all.

Nakia Cockatoo (185cm / 86kg)
The Eagles have a need for pace in their midfield mix, and Nakia Cockatoo would bring plenty of that. Explosive and strong, Cockatoo showed his power and ability in a curtain raiser on Grand Final morning and with brilliant testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine. There are a number of clubs interested in him, but he has missed a significant amount of footy with his foot injury so will need close assessment

Or is their someone else our recruiters might blow their wad over

Yeah I was surprised the Cats delisted him as well - not flashy by any means but was a solid role player.

Wouldn't be best 22 but provides good depth. In the mix with the likes of Lucas and Lockyer I guess as a DFA if we won't to choose one
Definitely an upgrade on Paddy

My guess would be Weller, DeGoey or Cockatoo.

Don't think Pickett will be an option (unfortunately)

IMO Pickett/Weller/Ahern/Cockatoo would be the players who would be best fit for WCE.
IMO only Cockatoo will be left available at Pick 11.

And I'm not upset about that - Cockatoo would be a really good fit for us.

Do it!

I'm still bemused that he was offered a new contract, even if it was just for a year.

Tries hard but he isn't AFL level
Because we needed depth and a one year deal adds to the money available end of next season.

It's a no brainer.

Taylor Hunt will be 24 and a half at the start of next season. He's not going to be a best 22 player. Pass.

Kane Lucas is a better option if we want to go a recycled player.

This is not a selection for our best 22. If we go a Lucas, Lockyer, or Hunt, we are selecting depth and hence a core of players that make up 23 to 32.

If all were still available I would think Pickett, however if he is gone as I suspect he will be, then I think we will take Cockatoo.

I would be happy with either Duggan or Weller if the above mentioned were both gone, however, here is the thing, if both Pickett and Cockatoo are gone then that will mean that one of the higher touted players will then slip to us...so its win /win either way.

Imagine if one of Wright, McCartin or Lever happened to slip, then we would be foolish not to take them just because they aren't midfielders ...... impossible you may say , well stranger things have happened on draft day with top five certainties tumbling down the draft board.

Panos plays more like a HFF than a pure inside mid - just based on the AFL video. Lacks pace to become a full time afl mid.

Someone will take a punt on him .
Chris25 compares him to a David Myers type.
Only 20-25 touches per game in the SANFL but very damaging. A clearance king and capable of 60m+ drop punts.
For me, the proof will be in his beep test results, if you're not quick you better be able to run all day.

Simpson has stated he wants players who can fill multiple roles hence the recycled player who would best fit that description is Hunt. Better to have a player who fits the game plan.

We have little need for Hunt with McGinnity, Hutchings, Selwood. His selection would IMO bring into question the strategic thinking of our match committee.

he doesn't look slow in his highlights.

Can draft day just hurry up. There are so many options, I just want to have a player so that I can pin up unrealistic goals for them and be my shining hope for next season :drunk:
Anyways I want Pickett, though I can see him gone by our pick so Duggan will do nicely. Have slightly warmed to Cockatoo, but he is considered as a reach for our pick so not sure.

i'll admit i don't know much about hunt, but reading through the thread over on the geelong board they seem to think he can play at either end of the ground or as a run-with mid, which makes him at least more versatile than hutchings and i can't imagine he's any worse than mcginnity. plus we've now delisted a handful of small-medium backs, so there could be a spot for him.

I'm tipping Garlett i.e. 'other' in the poll. I know #11 is higher than his rating but:
i) Need speed in the midfield.
ii) Pickett won't be available.
iii) Cockatoo is too much of a risk.
iv) None of those likely to be available really scream 'pick me' plus the go-home factor.
v) Definitely don't need a tall.
