Analysis Derek Hine leaves the Pies

Ahhh, Derek "I can't pick Key forwards' Hine and was really responsible for giving all those players big dollars. Should have gone with the others

Keep him on the recruiting team. He has a lot of experience that shouldnt be wasted. A part time position maybe. That's if his ego could handle it. The forum continually goes on about how buckley was coaching for the past - defensive zones etc - but no one ever mentions that Hine has been recruiting the same type of players since MM was in town. Players that can kick it down the line and then win contests.

This is the thing for me, its very hard to judge a recruiter. as an outsider. You can only judge based on the picks they have, which for us has mainly been late round selections of recent years and potential misses ie players we passed on.

However internally they would be aware of his strike rate via analysing his draft list. For instance it has been well documented that we just missed out on Shai Bolton and were really keen on Koschitzke from Hawthorn as a late round pick. Both would have been great selections. Hine could have had the Bont as his No.1 pick for all we know, so his success rate in picking future stars is something better measured internally.

^ Yeah Bont and Bolton would have been very handy right now.

Good thing we have Nathan Murphy though as a player who could have gone top 6 in his draft, rather than that Naughton bloke.

All Recruiters have made Mistakes like that Before and Worse

Been solid in the draft despite losing a lot of first round picks imo.

Successes not counting father sons and most recruits.

Pendles, Daisy
Reid, Brown,
Sidebottom, Beams, Thomas
Dawes, Goldsack, Toovey
Fasolo,
Elliott
Grundy
Maynard, Langdon, JDG, Philips
Stevenson
Mihochek
Hell I would even count Crisp

Fails

Sharenberg, Freeman
Broomhead, the other SA guy
Most of our rookies over the last 10 years.

Been in the finals much more than most sides over the last 15 years while he has been our top recruiter despite giving up a lot of draft picks and recieving low 1st round picks or none at all from about 2008 to 2021 with the exceptions of JDG, Moore, Sharenberg, Freeman and Stevenson.

Im sure I have missed a few on the success and fail side of things.

How are Fasolo and Stevenson successes?

Fasolo was a very underated player very talented and played over 100 games in very talented sides which is way above what most play when picked at pick 45 imo and Stevenson is clearly a very good player. Its not Hines fault he was forced out

He was forced out because he was a nutcase with a terrible attitude, that is definitely Hine's fault for picking him.

Your constant rewriting of history to try and make your points make for great reading. Fasolo played 100 games as a pick 45 and had the talent to play more - that is a win for the recruiter. It's not Hine's fault he panned out the way he did.

Stephenson will be a 100 game player within two years, won the Rising Star and was a key cog in deep finals runs. That's a win for the recruiter.

Got to agree with Hine, Murphy could have gone top 6 in his draft…. If only six people nominated for that particular draft

Dekka hasn’t lost me yet. If we give him some opportunity I think he can set us up again
You’ve got to be kidding me.

On balance this bloke has performed far worse than Buckley did over the last decade

Wright will decide whether he stays or not.
At this stage, I assume he is staying.
Hine didn’t have many first round picks last few seasons.
2020 May go down as a beauty?? Too early to judge.
He underperformed as list Manager…obviously recruiting is his strength.

Whilst we traded 4 out for Treloar and Beams. We got one for Daisy and one for Beams and Wellingham and Dawes were traded out for picks about the same as the picks we squandered on Beams. He hasn't had that bad a hand in drafts.

The big issue isn't the early picks though, he's gone a long while with virtually no hits from our late picks.
