Difference between the atmosphere at a Port Power vs Pride of South Australias home games?

This years crowds for a very competitive, winning most games at home Crows would be a real worry for the club. Have we ever offered somewhat desperate $1 game memberships for the last 2 game’s previously if committing to next years membership?

Our older demographic, despite short term being more immune to financial spending compression pressures, doesn’t bode well for future year trends. Have power ever averaged more to home games than us before? I don’t know and haven’t checked. But I can’t ever recall us getting 30-35k so regularly to home games.

This year the average crowd size at home has been 39k for us and 38k for them - considering the ladder positions of the two teams thats still not bad. We still have the 7th best average home crowd size on the league.

Looking at the data Port have not really gone up in average home attedance in the last 6 years, they range between 37-40k people. Whereas in 2017 for instance our average crowd was 51k. I don't think it would be a massive concern right now, if Ports performances dropped back next year you could see a huge drop off in attendances for them.

The Western “Members Stand” was mostly former Footy Park members when we moved to Adelaide Oval. The age profile was between ancient and biblical. The loss of AFC members since Covid is mostly in the Western Stand.

Is this a bad thing? I don’t think so. Covid will accelerate the rejuvenation of our match day members. Not surprisingly, older people become less enthusiastic to come to the footy in bad weather.

Comparing the Pear and Crows average crowds this year is a bit misleading. Poort have had much better time slots.

Port are also second on the ladder.

My Partner works at Adelaide oval and he in the keg rooms mostly and he said the noise is the most different he says Port fans are loud all through the game so it's hard to differentiate if a goal has been kicked because they are always yelling at something there's always a hum, at Crows game he says it's obvious when the Crows kick a goal, he can feel the vibration through the walls and is much louder and during general play he can hear nothing from crows fans at all.
I can't believe you're the first person to say this. It's pretty obvious that Port crowds are way louder all throughout the games and they make a lot of noise when goals are kicked as well. Crows games turn to silence after the ball is bounced and if you cheer loudly you get old biddies glaring at you.

I have a good friend with two Port memberships and a partner who has been pregnant twice in the last three years. As a result I’ve been to more than my fair share of Port games on his partner’s ticket just for a beer and time spent with a mate.

Hard to explain but the biggest difference I’ve noticed is Crows fans are more cheering and “woohoo we kicked a goal”. While Port fans seem more angry and aggressive like “up yours, we kicked a goal against you”.

Port fans are probably louder on balance, and create arguably a rowdier or “better” atmosphere at times.

Timeslots?

Primetime time slots allow Port fans to have a few "pre" drinks and arrive in good spirits.

We have had a few afternoons... need to get loose at the game and at that cost, you just don't.

Probably only a minor factor though.

It’s very noticeable and would imagine our crowds are down 10-20% on previous similar performing years. Not great.

The clear trend would be Power gaining crowds in recent years whilst our crowds drop off. Not great signs IMO. Ditto for members.

and people bagging NTUA...we would kill for this. Compare this “global scale” pre match entertainment to our VERY annoying screeching female MC and it’s chalk and cheese. We lose
Get your hand off it mate

I’m glad this has been raised as a Crows member who has attended games for both clubs over the past couple of seasons. Here are some observations.

1. I hate that we run out on to the ground first. It kills the atmosphere. The home team should always run out second. We are on the ground 14 minutes before the first bounce. That is far too early. Most fans are still making their way into the stadium. It seems pointless for three extra minutes of warming up on the ground.

2. We need to reintroduce the full club song. The abbreviated version is totally unnecessary. Why have we done it?

3. The 60 seconds countdown song (Imgaine Dragons remix) is good but it needs to be louder. We can’t copy Port with an anthem but it needs to rev up the crowd more.

4. We need a better song for the players as they run up the race. Port has Rundamental’s Not Giving In and the fans get up and clap. That does not happen at Crows games. It is flat.

5. Fix the public address system. It echoes and is unlistenable. We could do with a ground announcer who has a strong voice.

Will the club listen? It is doubtful.

We're there for the footy, they're there for 'game day experience'.

Its funny, the real Port Adelaide supporters dispair for what their club has become. Their club has pandered to the bandwagoners.

If you went to Alberton in the 80's compared to Adelaide Oval now, it is chalk and cheese.

Imagine Fos or John playing an 80's love song to kick off a game. You'd be chased down Queen Street for even suggesting such crap.

I'm sure the volume has been turned down. When we had this I recall it being pretty loud.

It seems like crowds at our games need something to happen to get us fired up, kinda like the crowd at Lords the other week. A Tex long bomb goal, a cheap shot off the ball or a poor umpiring decision gets us going. Rankine also seems to be able to wake the crowd up.

I find the crowd engagement stuff we do is irritating and seems to be more about promoting sponsors than actually engaging with the crowd. That Balfours marking a pie one was particularly grating.

I personally find the NTUA thing super cringe - it's just so confected. Have plenty of Port loving mates who feel the same way. Very glad we don't 'have it'.

That said I completely agree on the chick screaming into the mic at our home games - she's horrible. Nails on a blackboard levels of horrible.

Yeah louder is always better and I'm confused as to why there appears to be so many people acting like quieter = more dignified.

Whether it's creating the atmosphere for players to feed off or creating artificial pressure on the umpires' as they make decisions, there is absolutely no doubt louder = better.

Port Adelaide fans are louder in my experience and that is just that. We can spin it however we like but facts are facts (and I'm basing my 'facts' not just my own experience but other thoughts on this too).

I think port do it well tbh

NTUA I don’t care for

Otherwise as someone said their pre team entry song and crowd engagement works better than ours for pre game atmosphere. I think that’s partly song choice partly nature of their fans. They’re on their feet, clap to the beat and it feels like go time. Ours by the time team runs out it feels like 90% of people aren’t switched on yet and it’s generally a polite clap to welcome them.

Also agree our engagement during the game isn’t enjoyable. At least ports speed dating thing you might find numerous in some way or wonder what they say, catch a pie type thing just served no purpose. Especially when it’s limited to 1 bay they are clearly working in (as opposed to a traditional dance cam designed to get everyone up and about as the camera moves around the whole ground)

It’s not a major deal, ultimately if we play well that’s what dictates 95% of the game day atmosphere but we could try be more vibrant.

I am going to send a constructive email to Silvers with a number of these points in addition to our away guernsey (ideally being the dark blue colouring and large crow with black outline which looks amazing).

I have found Execs have ALWAYS responded to respectful and constructive feedback over the years and will pass on any feedback received
