More like divine intervention to have any chance of a win

Do not tempt the football gods Gryphindor, they are all powerful!!![/quote]

Prahran 1's & 2's total points 258 - Ivanhoe total 59.....Not trying to be too critical/funny here but you may need a little more help than the football Gods to bridge this gap Wamba....not quite the consistency you'd be looking for I'd imagine. Conceded the game before the bounce by playing 1 extra in defence most of the day #52 (G.Francis but I could be wrong) to minimilise the damage. PA's key forwards 4 gls each so I'm not sure if the ploy worked with end result 10+ goal loss....despite result I thought Hoes were competitive #6 Harris in particular and will finish around 5th is my best guess....

The Gryphons are the only team capable of upsetting the top 2. Granted they both comprehensively beat Monash at home. But next time around they both play away at Monash's home ground so will be interesting to see how that plays out.
After this weekend's round there will be 3 games between 3rd and 4th.
Im tipping Hawks to finish 4th and Ivanhoe 5th.

Elsternwick v West Brunswick - 17 points. Good win by the Wicks last week. Only 1% separate these teams with Elsternwick having very ordinary defence.

This is simply untrue - the back six led by big Matt Preston and Kepler Bradlet are are the most close nit baklines in D3

Whats happened to UH? Can anyone explain why the D3 scribe rates them so highly?

The scribe has an unhealthy bias towards them. Have seen them twice in the last month and i simply don't see them touching Monash, Hoes or Hawthorn let alone the top two.

Apart from the ABC series Angry Boys probably the biggest let down of the year after their preseason hype. They seem to be unable to fire a shot when it counts, its a worrying history of mediocrity. My advice would by play youngsters and aim for next season.

Cheerio,

Brian of Brighton.

Hi BoB

Preseason hype - trawl back and find it??? Worrying history of mediocrity - 4 premierships since 2003 [we will take that]. Play under 18s ... great idea ... I'll tell the coach... whoops we had 7 in on Saturday .. Thanks for the help BoB. Puff Puff.

After witnessing the p1ss poor excuse for a ressie umpire(and a bloke i suspect) uni dished up last week,we had the pleasure to see a very good umpire at Mt lilydale.
Easily the best umpire in the ressie grade.:thumbsu:

Fair enough, they might be a close knit unit but having a look at the ladder they have let through more goals than any other team except for Hawthorn. 25 goals more than West Brunswick for the season and they are bottom of the ladder.

Well.... there are lies, damn lies and statistics. You stick to your pencil pushing statistics and let the real men play football. Ok, sonny?
Just have a look at UHS VU's home run. From here on they should be nicknamed "The Gypsys". They have dropped off faster than Demons supporters when it snows at Mt Buller.!

Well the 7 young fellas u refer to may be the reason for the massive slump over the last month.

The success Brian of Brighton is referring to is senior success. I myself feel i can comment on this as a state ranked Bridge player. I know what pressure is!!!! 6 time over 45 bridge champion pairs at the Sandringham Yacht Club is testament to this.

Nicco do i have your attention?????? We can work through this, maybe we together can reverse the atrocious form your boys have displayed this past month.

I check in here on a weekly basis and can be found wandering Bay St in the evenings enjoying a latte. Best of luck, i'm channeling my success your way.

Brian of Brighton.

C'mon all you D3 readers, jump on and give me some opinions please, I need some info and your input would be really appreciated. Thanks

Just go to a couple training sessions at each and work it out. Or just wait and see who is the closest to your doorstep.

I have no idea about club culture etc of either club. 1 wear black and white, the other (UHS) wear some sort of poo/vomit colour

Toorak Torp - I had a little look at both games and we were CLEARLY outplayed in both games. The two blues are the best team(s) we have played this year and look to be very well placed at this stage of the year.

As for us at Ivanhoe - clearly not a great game to have 10 senior players missing - yup 10, before the game started. Then losing our CHB - who is most likely leading our B&F - in the first 3 minutes - does not help against the best team we have played - with quality forwards. But, I am sure ALL clubs have missing players - and we need to suck it up.

We are looking forward to the rematch later in the year.....lets see if we can get a little bit closer :)

Chump.

P.S. Just a mention to the reserves umps in our games - great job. I thought the guy from Prahran was fantastic ....and we are always very grateful of the fantastic job that Ian does from our club.

Not surprised you rate him highly. Ian paid 1 free kick to us and 12-13 frees to the hoes when we played you earlier this year.

Ivanhoe would have lost by 400 points if it weren't for big 52 Francis dropping back.

losing our 3 tallest defenders has hurt the Hoe town, but that's footy. Should be a good game vs Yarra this weekend.

Progressive 35 from 48.

Monash Gryphons v Power House - 28 points.
Elsternwick v West Brunswick - 17 points.
Mt Lilydale v Hawthorn - 33 points.
Albert Park v Yarra Valley - 45 points.
Prahran Assumption v Ivanhoe - 55 points.
Kew v UHS-VU - 14 points.

Progressive 39 from 54.

Getting of a couple off band wagons and climbing aboard a couple more. West Brunswick are out with Kew in. Elsternwick might be making their way back in(but not this week).

Monash Gryphons v Elsternwick - 34 points. I've been hearing some interesting rumours coming from the Elsternwick camp in regards to some players coming back. In particular Dave Smith is back from Australian mixed netball duties. His inclusion will improve Elsternwicks stocks further and will make them serious contenders for the finals. However they are rumours and whilst Elsternwick are on the improve I think Monash will be too strong for them here at home.

Ivanhoe v Yarra Valley - 56 points. Yarra Valley's defense will show how much of a gap there is between the top two and the rest of the comp.

UHS-VU v Power House - 14 points. Haven't UHS fortunes changed. The thumping last week to Kew doesn't instill much confidence and they are not playing like a team that their ladder position shows. They haven't been able to beat teams not as good as Power House so suspect they will lose here. Eddo is a very hard man to stop whether up forward on down back.

West Brunswick v Albert Park - 9 points. Bottom of the table clash. I actually rated West Brunswick as they played well against as. They must have been having a good day as they have struggled to get wins on the board. AP to just get over the line here as they have more ability to kick goals with the likes of Muscat and Murnane(maybe also Murchie if he's playing). WB don't really have any options up forward.

Hawthorn v Kew - 3 point. Match of the round. One of these teams will play finals. This is the match that will launch their claim. Hawthorn have the worst defense when Oggie is not playing there. He can stop some but not all and they also need him up forward. Kew have been a bit of a surprise packet and they might actually have depth rather than stacking the 2's as they have been accused of in the past. Not sure who to tip but recent form suggests Kew will win... just.

Prahran Assumption v Mt Lilydale - 87 points. Whilst they are on the improve(and will probably stay up), I suspect Mt Lilydale are in for a serious flogging this game. They play their ground well but being away doesn't bode well for the Rams and the Two Blues will have a day out.

Iceberg: who are 'we'??

Ian gave you one free kick for the day? Damn, I will have to talk to him about that - how the hell will we win a game if he continues in that sort of form..... I specifically mentioned to him to pay NO FREES to any other clubs.

I am always grateful to the volunteers of the comp that do their best. I wish you and your club well Iceberg and hopefully you will receive a much more even playing field this week.

Chump.

Half way mark of the season REVIEW. (sort of)

Prahran seem to be living up to expectations and have multiple on-ballers who seem to win 80% of all clearences every week. With the ball moving forward so often they create dozens more scoring shots than other sides, which is why they have 3 guys in the top ten goal kickers. The club has 100+ on the list.
Yarra Valley have the best backline in D3 that I've seen in many years. This should hold them firm for a deep finals campaign.
Monash Have a fairly potent forward line which has to fire together soon. (sorry boys)Our backline is mature and rebound as good as any. At the start of the season we set goals of staying in D3 and to not loose at home. So far so good. To play finals would be a hugely succesful 2011.
Ivanhoe Have won 3 games by less than 2 goals and lost about the same by as many. Hard to guage, but should play finals with the help of the goal kicking on-ballers.
UHS-VU Started well but since scraping home by a point to Mt Lilydale 5 weeks back have lacked a bit of hunger. ????? Question marks allround???
Kew had no chance from most scribes at the start of the season but have been winning every second week and could possibly snatch the wide open 5th spot come finals. Also have good goal kicking on-ballers.
Hawthorn have had the highest 'against score' so far and with an average of nearly 30 points extra against a round they need to find another defender quick if they want a crack at finals. Thier leading goal kicker has 14.
Power house Pikey would not be happy and I'd think the training sessions will consist of some punishing running and physical torment. They have a gun forward in Edwards but need to find another 2-3 scorers ASAP.
Elsternwick have a pretty tough 5-6 weeks ahead and if they can somehow manage 3 wins from this could play finals. I cant see them doing so though as thier backline seemed to lack any run out.
Mt Lilydale would be pretty happy so far I'd expect, even though they dropped three games by 2 goals or less and could have found themselves sitting in 3rd or fourth. They have the best ruckman in D3 make no mistakes about that. Being the most injury hit club and having the smallest list they deserve respect.
Albert Park have had a interupted season through ground availability and injury but to have only two wins on the board thus far I'm thinking they may be winning a flag in D4 next season. Harsh maybe but someones got to go down.
West Brunswick have a reliable onball unit and forward line I believe but are yet another side lacking 1,2,3 quality backs.

P.S Very very very slow day at the office!

As we turn at the half way point, the ladder is still to really take shape, although the top three already look safe for finals action.

Round 10.
Monash Gryphons vs Elsternwick
Ivanhoe vs Yarra Valley
UHS-VU vs Power House
West Brunswick vs Albert Park
Hawthorn vs Kew
Prahran vs Mt Lilydale

Round 9 Preview

Gryphs over House by 25 Pts (The Gryphons are no world-beaters, but are a good, honest, hard at the ball side that find a way to beat those below them, especially at ECR. On that basis, you cannot tip against them. Clint Mackie to dominate in Dan Baxter’s 150th).
Pies over the Wicks by 16 Pts (West have played the top 4 in the last month and have been largely competitive in all. If they sustain a similar effort this weekend they will beat the Wicks comfortably. Somehow I think it will be close though. Matty Barron to continue his recent run of form).
Hawks over Rams by 6 Pts (Make no mistake, Mt Lilydale have been hit harder by injuries to key players than any other team in the competition and the weeks rest may just freshen up a few of their niggling injuries. Having said that, Hawthorn fancy themselves as the best side out of the five and are playing most accountable football after a belated start. The ground may be heavy if the rain comes and that is sure to keep this one close, but class should prevail).
Yarra Valley over The Falcons by 51 Pts (Complacency may be the only thing that could conceivably keep this tight, but the Bushrangers have winners on every line especially the brothers Pollard, Yeo & Trend. Bushrangers easily).
Prahran over Hoes by 61 Pts (We will find out just how much Ivanhoe have improved in the last month as they face the yardstick at Toorak Park. The Four blues will probably drop a match like this sometime this year, but it’s not going to be Saturday. I’ll take Ben Furness for best afield)
UHS-VU over Kew by 5 Pts (This one may well be the closest contest of the day and I will give Boycey’s men one more go. Their form of late is slipping, but like Mt Lilydale will have benefitted from the week off to freshen up some of the battle weary. Kirk or Payne to prove too much for Kew).

Round 9 Review

3/6 (35/54 cumulative) was another mediocre return as the middle rung teams continue to surprise or disappoint. Just how bad are Uni High? They haven’t won in a month and seemingly are playing the worst football in the section. It is remarkable how great their form reversal has been considering I was spruiking them as a potential challenger early in the season. I have officially given up on them and even our esteemed D3 scribe must be scratching his head with their form. It would be remiss of me not to congratulate and commend the Bears though, as they are playing some inspired football due to the likes of Nick Tinetti, Paul Donaldson and Darcy Spencer. Add to the mix one of the competitions best forwards in Andrew Brazzale and perhaps they are the best equipped team to push for the finals outside the five. Great win by the Wicks that I completely got wrong – cannot pick Elsternwick, but every now and then they surprise – against a most disappointing West Brunswick who now find themselves at the bottom of the table with the worst % in the comp; The Grace boys were superb on EP2 and judging by the scoring shots, the margin of 35 points could’ve been far more. The extra rain in the Yarra Valley proved a fillip for the Rams as they exposed the Hawks youngsters on their swamp. Full credit to the Mountain Men as they are just beginning to regain some of their better players from the sidelines. The top 3 did what was expected. Perhaps the margin at East Caulfield flattered the Gryphons a little as the House took it right up to them for three quarters. Daniel Wills and Jason Harrak were very good when it counted however, and merely being competitive will be little comfort for Pikey’s men.

Round 10 Preview

Gryphs over Wicks by 21 Pts (Elsternwick will be buoyed by their better performances over recent weeks and always find something extra for the Murphy-Wells Cup, however, Monash simply do not lose at ECR to teams below them and you can’t see that trend ceasing here. Expect Kye Cherian to amongst the Gryphons best).
Yarra Valley over Hoes by 45 Pts (Some on this forum will give Ivanhoe a real chance of an upset at Hoe Park; however, I am not one of them. The Bushrangers destroyed Albert Park away from home last round and impressively finished off the game with nine goals in the final term. I sincerely believe they are every bit as good as Prahran and their fitness is arguably better than all in the section. Ivanhoe, like the Gryphs, simply do not have the firepower to match the top 2 and will fall well short).
House over UHS-VU by 13 Pts (I will undoubtedly get this one wrong, but how could anyone select Uni High with any confidence at present? Powerhouse have not been much better, but there is a finals berth available for whichever team 5th to 12th that finds some form late in the season. Picking who that will be is difficult thing. Paul Edwards played well up forward and down back last week and should do enough to stretch the UHS defence. The combine will look to Patrick St John for some inspiration but will fall just short).
West over AP by 3 Pts (Strange to call a wooden spoon battle match of the round, but this has the potential to be the most passionate affair of the weekend. The loser – especially if the Magpies – has one foot in D4, yet the winner still has realistic, yet faint finals hopes. As soon as I get off West, they will win, but I doubt anyone in the VAFA would bet ‘London to a Brick’ on either of these two. Willy Wood to get the home side over the line just…).
Hawks over Kew by 6 Pts (the third ‘flip of the coin’ for the round. We will see just how good the Bears are tomorrow, as if they can comfortably beat the Hawks, they are a real ‘smoky’ for the finals. Ivanhoe will most likely lose meaning the winner of this will be equal 4th and right in the mix. Hawthorn may bring in some bigger bodied players in order to win the contested ball and may have to put Richard Ogge forward to secure the points. The Rathmines Rd faithful on ‘Sill Hill’ may do just enough to see the home team salute.
Four Blues over Rams by 55 Pts (If Prahran take this one seriously they may win by 100, but I feel they may use this game to rest a few of the weary and allow some of their emerging youngsters to acquire a taste of senior football. Even with that being the case they should win comfortably. Matty ‘Cardinal’ Pell to be best afield).

Good luck to all
