looking at the results from last week I'd imagine Adam "Sweat hog" McBrien would get the call up for Ivanhoe. The 9 goal haul was impressive, I imagine Sweat-hog, Close, Richardson will be a potent combination.

Joe Mizoka should return to the 1's also, with a big name or 2 missing this weekends game.

Ivanhoe should scrape over the line, probably 15 - 16 goals win. local derby.

--

YV vs Gryphs - Haven't seen Yarra Valley yet and they sit with Gryphs at 5-1 so hard to make an informed judgement. Yarra ran Prahran close at Domeney while the Gryphs went down comfortably to Prahran at Toorak Park. Based on that and it being Yarra's home ground, I'll tip them by 5 goals.

--

Mt Lily vs Q - Kew have played some good footy this year and have been unlucky not to have won more games. On form they are a match for Mt Lilydale but the home ground advantage does seem a big one. Mt Lilydale by 4 goals

--

AP vs EP - park are a dangerous side with plenty of scoring power. Muscat was back among the goals last week and with he Malone and potentially Murchie up forward they will have too much for park who must be starting to worry they are drifting too far south. park by 30 points. local derby.

--

house vs Prahan commision flats - Most would prefer to live in a house, but weight of numbers will see the commision flat's of prahran shit it in. local derby.

--

Hawks vs UHS - east meets west. I'd back Tupac to beat Notorious BIG on this occasion.

Progressive 29 from 36

Monash Gryphons v Mt Lilydale - 7 points.
Elsternwick v Yarra Valley - 78 points.
Ivanhoe v Hawthorn - 13 points.
UHS-VU v Albert Park - 22 points.
West Brunswick v Prahran Assumption - 45 points.
Kew v Power House - 8 points.

Progressive 32 from 42

Poor form for me last week tipping only 50%. I knew they were danger games but didn't have the balls to take a gamble. Tipping should be easier as the season goes on but the up and down form of a few teams is making things difficult.

Yarra Valley
v Monash Gryphons - 19 points. Game of the round. Both teams looking so far this season and whoever wins this will guarantee a finals berth. Given YV probably have the best defence in the comp, avenues for goal will be difficult for the Gryphs. Letson fine form in defence to stop Wills and give YV the win.

Ivanhoe v West Brunswick - 35 points. West Brunswick haven't amounted to much after a promising start to the year. Ivanhoe have been the opposite and showing better form as the season goes on. West Brunswick are in real need of a strong forward to kick goals for them. Ivanhoe have a few options in Close, Collins and Richardson. Will be slippery conditions at Hoe park and goals will be difficult to come by and the smaller men will really come in to the play.

Mt Lilydale v Kew - 5 points. Tough game to tip this. MtL will be tough to beat at home whoever they play. Whilst both teams have only notched up 2 wins I would suggest Kew are a better side from what I have seen of both. MtL will have players come back in so this will improve their stocks and in the end will be a more competitive side. Al Stuart likes the heavy track and playing at home will have a great game.

Albert Park
v Elsternwick - 34 points. AP have been up and down like a yo yo and had a surprising win last week, where as Elsternwick have been just down. No sign of Murchie for a couple of rounds. Any word there? AP are seriously lacking depth so really depends on the in's and out's this game. Neither team has much of a defence so suspect a shoot out if whether permits.

Hawthorn v UHS-VU - 11 points. Another tough game to tip. Do you go with your head or your heart. UHS will be fuming after last weeks loss. It was a game they needed to consolidate their spot in the top 5. Poor form in recent weeks suggest there are some issues. On the other hand Hawthorn are a better team than shown on paper but they can only seem to beat lowly teams and at home games. If they wish to play finals they need to win this game. Even though is a home game I just don't think they have it in them. Ogge will probably be moved in to defence and try hard but it wont be enough.

Power House v Prahran Assumption - 63 points. Power House in recent years have been able to pull the surprises and win games like this(remembering back to Bentleigh) but wont pull it off this game. Prahran are strong and consistent with team hardly changing since round 1(5 guys with less than 5 games). Power House on the other hand have failed to find the same balance(18 guys with less than 5 games). Wet conditions might make it hard for Edwards and Burnside whilst PA have plenty on in and under players to choose from and kick goals.

Last round of matches before the traditional break for Queenie's birthday and time for some clubs to get a move along:

Yarra Valley vs Monash Gyphons
Ivanhoe vs West Brunswick
Mt Lilydale vs Kew
Albert Park vs Elsternwick
Hawthorn vs UHS-VU
Power House vs Prahran

Good luck to all and enjoy next week's break.

G'day Redgum - How is the bloke that was taken away in the Ambulance a couple of weeks back?

Hopefully all is well and the injury hasnt effected his family/work.

Spent the night in Hospital (I think) having scans etc but all came back good. Back at work now and seems to be going along ok. Will probably be out for another few weeks though.

Round 7 Preview

Yarra Valley over the Wicks by 45 Pts (I’m sure Steve Hall will not allow his chargers to start so poorly again this week, so expect a rugged defensive plan from the home side. However, the Bushrangers are too good and their superior skill will see them break the shackles after half time to record a reasonably comfortable win. Lester Piggott to be amongst the best for the victors),
UHS-VU over Albert Park by 35 Pts (Seems pretty clear cut this one as well. Whilst the Falcons have many scoring avenues, their defence is flaky at best and will allow the combine too many forward 45 entries. I expect Uni High to bounce out of the blocks and put their opponents away early. Rhys Kirk to kick a bag).
Hawks over the Hoes by 3 Pts (Even though logic says to pick the home side when in doubt, Hawthorn could’ve won far more easily if they had kicked straight last week and hence I am pretty keen on them and believe that the home ground advantage will only serve to keep this one close all day. Certainly match of the day and one that will be very telling come round 18. Any of the young Hawks may be the defining factor, so I will select Veneet Bist for best on ground, mainly because I love the name).
Four Blues over West by 46 Pts (West Brunswick showed some good signs against Monash, but will have to double their efforts if they are to even stay in touch with Prahran. The visitors have no explicit weakness and will show why they are odds on for the flag. Luke Giansiracusa to be handy around the big sticks).
Monash over Mt Lilydale by 16 Pts (If this were at Lilydale, I would almost certainly select the Rams, however, the Gryphs have not lost at home in a long time do will do just enough to win. Should be a fiery and passionate contest as the Mountain Men look to atone for their grand final defeat at Vermont in September. Justin Roberts and Jamie Paull will give their all as usual, but will not be able to penetrate Monash’s miserly defence regularly enough. Kye Cherian to be amongst the Gryphs best).
Kew over the House by 8 Pts (Very tough one to select, but Powerhouse have been largely disappointing in recent weeks and Kew may do just enough to keep them off the winners list for the entire month. Mick Cochrane to get plenty of touches for the Bears).

Round 7 Review

3/6 (28/42 cumulative) and back to my usual mediocre tipping…

If round 7 has proven anything to us it is perhaps there is very little between 6th to 12th, and possible 4th to 12th for that matter. Someone theorised last night that there are really only three decent teams in the competition and fourth and fifth place will be filled by whoever is playing their best football come late July and August.

Certainly the most disappointing team of the previous weekend was UHS-VU. Full credit to the Falcons for their come from behind win, but that last quarter capitulation was textbook Uni High and the mental softness that I thought they had shelved some time ago. Sure they have been hit hard by injuries, but so are all teams by mid year and their season is slipping fast. The combine’s one saving grace is that they’ve not been crushed and their percentage is still okay for now. Nathan Dallas was superb for the visitors in a win that may prove very handy come round 18. The Hawks were arguably worse in their thrashing at the hands of Ivanhoe. Just when I thought they had turned their season around, they produced their most lamentable football of the year against the rampaging Hoes. Ivanhoe would be rapt with the form of Jimmy Collins up front and word is they would’ve gone close to knocking anyone off last weekend such was the consistency of their performance in all facets of the game. The third oddity was Kew’s pitiful effort of one goal in the second half to allow the House to storm home and win at Victoria Park. Big Paul Edwards kicked half the score as the unpredictable Powerhouse got their season back on track. The top three all won comfortably with the Gryphons effort against an undermanned Rams perhaps the most surprisingly convincing.

Round 8 Preview

Bushrangers over the Gryphons by 14 Pts (Certainly match of the day and as the predicted wet weather has not yet arrived, I expect an open free flowing game. Ryan Pollard will be blanketed most likely by Lee Wells, which may leave Simon Yeo as the deciding factor up forward for the home side. Yarra Valley will look to tag Matt Fletcher so the Gryphons forward entries are limited. If the Gryphs are a chance they will need something special from Kye Cherian up forward. Have to go with the home side in a tight affair).
Hoes over the Pies by 24Pts (I am one who rates the Westies a little higher than their lowly position. They have just endured a horror stretch of Yarra Valley followed by Gryphons then Prahran and were competitive in all three at times, almost knocking off Monash on their home patch. They have limited class but plenty of passion, so Ivanhoe would not want to be switched off for any significant period of time. Class should prevail though).
Rams over Kew by 13 Pts (Not sure if either team is playing well enough to win this one but have to select Mt Lilydale at home as they are proud enough to protect their home turf. Kew will struggle to kick any significant score on a ground that may be on the heavy side. Expect the Rams to make this a tough and torrid slog to the line if it is tight come the last quarter. Justin Roberts to do just enough to see his men through).
Falcons over the Wicks by 35Pts (Speaking of teams not good enough to win, one simply can’t select Elsternwick against anyone. Albert Park played arguably their most accountable football for the year with a great away win at Royal Park. If Dylan ‘Kevin’ Muscat can kick a half dozen again, the margin may be far greater).
Hawks over UHS-VU by 2 Pts (My head tell me to pick Uni High as they will come out breathing fire, but I get the feeling Hawthorn will also have endured a taxing week on the track and may be able to take the chocolates. The Hawks form has been harder to pick than a broken nose, but with big Dan Lauletta back, the spirit of previous conquest may be present with him. Hawks just? I will give them one more chance).
Four Blues over the House by 41 Pts (Not sure why I am tipping the House to cover the line, but I feel this is the sort of game where Prahran may go through the motions for much of time, play about 15 minutes of footy and kick a bunch of goals – a la Collingwood vs. the Crows. Will it be Christoforo or Sleight to kick a bag of goals?).

Good Luck to all

The Tom Brain Challenge Cup returns to Elsternwick.
On the 20th aniversary of the epic grand final that saw ANZ Bank ( Albert Park) loose only one game in that season, the BIG one. Elsternwick again defied the pundits and the assembled past players (minus the trophys' namesake.) A gritty game favoured by a brisk north wind. The visitors up by 3 points at half time with Justin Hunter bagging 5 by the main break. The Falcons could not gain advantage in the third and with Hunter felled by a high tackle, missing the last quarter, coach Steve Hall rang the changes. The wind was gone, the game up for grabs. Wicks' rucks, Convery and Cameron had spells at FF. The latter putting every effort to score and assist the visitors to get over the line.
At the other end the 'wick defence kept spearhead Jason ('man mountain') Murchie to just one major for the day.

He's OK mate. May be back to training after the break. Shouldn't be any long term ill effects as I understand it.

It was hardly "a high takle" - just a dirty cheap shot

Hoes in the end were lucky to snatch the game from West Brunswick. Having said that it was a good effort to come home into the wind and take the points.

Worse sides going around than west brunswick and they'll take a few scalps on the run home.

Hoes will need a more consistent effort against prahran in a couple of weeks.

Can someone from Uni High please come on here and explain the actions of your reserves umpire on the weekend. Didn't think he was too bad until the final five minutes where he most definitely lost the plot. Made some very bad decisions and the two reports were dubious at best.

More like divine intervention to have any chance of a win

Do not tempt the football gods Gryphindor, they are all powerful!!!

Does anyone else think that the Gryph's have had the easiest fixture to date and consequently has elevated their ladder position?

I was reading the D3 report in TAF and the young kid that does the writing picked up on it, so i went and had a look. They have had it very easy and i don't think they will go close to touching yarra, uni high or prahran

Dont know how you can say that 8 rounds in. Everyone has almost played everyone.
Regardless of that Ivanhoe, Monash and Uni High and everyone else for that matter are just making up the numbers. Its a 2 horse race.

Looks that way at this point in time Johnny. These two teams have taken all before them so far and look to be the two stand outs for sure. If all remains the same - then you would expect these two to meet for the big dance.

Not great news for the hoes who have to play both - twice - in the last 9 rounds. Unlucky? maybe it will give us a chance to try and work them out a little if we are good enough to still make the finals? ;)

That being said - key injuries to key players makes for some interesting challenges in football, so whilst the fat lady has the pipes warming up......she's not in full cry just yet.

Chump.

I love how you use the word "dubious". I would prefer the real word - CHEAT.

UHS-VU and Hawthorn should have a real close look at their umpires. Clubs have already complained about them (ad nauseum) but these clubs don't care.

Should be another cracker when UHS-VU and Hawthorn play in the Reserves. Which CHEAT will get their team over the line???

CHEAT?? I don't think he is nor our umpire for that matter.
He is just a really bad umpire who doesn't know or understand how to control a game of footy when tensions rise and then his decisions leave a lot to be desired.
The game was well and truely over, Uni High were up by about 20 points so there is no basis for the CHEAT call but it does make his decision making all that more baffling.
Unbelievable last week our umpire was consistently being called a cheat by the opposition players, one of which I don't think had a touch let alone a kick for the game, and then he paid a very doubtful decision that ended up allowing Ivanhoe to win the game. If he is a cheat then he is an extremely bad one!!
Uni High are quite a good group of blokes and I feel this guy lets their club down.

Is Uni High's reserves umpire also on the committee like those spoken about a while back? If yes then it makes for an interesting conversatio, If no and the club know he is bad, surely there is someone else or are we in that dire straights?

P.S thank you and good job to the majority of men in white out there across all divisions, vafa or club!

Can't follow the argument/logic here. Dubious reports but according to the VAFA website both Hawthorn players elected to take the penalty. One would think that they would defend themselves if there was any doubt??

If it is the old bloke with the mullet for UHS - he has a history of been a problem.

This is news to me mate, will have to find out what is going on at training tonight as everyone was adamant that they would contest the charges - on principal.

Is NikkoTeen from Uni High? Or, is he the current Year 12 English teacher? I would love to know his thoughts on the matter.

NikkoTeen is Boycey's love child.

He also occassionally pulls on the boots for the UHS-VU Reserves outfit...and usually stands idly in a back pocket leaning against the point post smoking a "roll your own"...chatting with the opposition resting rover..

Both blokes would have got more if they fronted so took the early plea - it's on the VAFA website. As for contesting on principle .... give us all a break [for a puff]
