Openning market fr D3 - 2011

Closest and most open comp I've seen in Division 3 for a long time. Could mount an argument for probably 11 of the 12 sides in this grade. Hopefully it's a ripping season!

With Pre-season kicking of in a month (well for the Gryphons anyway) I'm looking forward to loosing the 6 KG's I've stacked on since our D4 premiership. Our aim in 2011 is to stay afloat in D3 and will strive to be competetive. With 3-4 quality pick-ups I think we could push for finals but I'm sure all teams have similar goals. So who will make the finals? Who will be playing D4 in 2012 and who's going to be stuck in the middle?????
I am aware of Prahran and Hawthorn will get stronger, with Kew and UHS-VU probably looking at a tough year and maybe with MT.Lilydale.

Some really good match ups for rivalry round in the coming season with:

Mt Lilydale vs Yarra Valley
UHS-VU vs West Brunswick
Albert Park vs Power House
Monash Gryphons vs Elsternwick
Kew vs Hawthorn
Prahran vs Ivanhoe

Some real local derbies and games to look forward to

How far back does the Prahran v Ivanhoe rivalry go Rooster?

Don't think there is one having played in a few lopsided and meaningless contests in the context of those seasons.

There was more of a rivalry with State/Comm Bank before they merged but that's going back to C Grade in the 90's.

A very long way, I beleive they'll be competing for the "Wish we were still in D1 cup"

Na we wish we were back in B Grade.

I think power House will be the ones to beat with another year under Martin Pike as he got them playing good footy from the middle of the season onwards and they only just got beaten by St Johns in the prelim.
If they pick another ruckman to help Burnside out the will be very hard to beat.
Albert park will also be up there as well

The Hoes started Pre-season training last night with a strong attendance there and keen to get things under way.

The encouraging thing was the large amount of young guys coming through and attending the first session. Several regular players from last season could not attend, but will be there on Wednesday for the second session.

The usual rumors on players joining the club have started and one or two have moved on to another club or retired.

Go Hoes!!

Chump.

Prahran v Ivanhoe can now play in rivalry round for the Assumption College Cup after Prahran's merger with Assumption and Ivanhoe played as Ivanhoe / Assumption in the early 2000's

See the press release on Prahran's website for details: http://www.prahranfootball.org.au/

Good stuff Chump, thats an early start to pre-season. Any others kicked of????? Us Mt.Lilydale fellas start next wednesday and have been informed to just bring the runners, so I'm expecting alot of running over the next 4-5 weeks of pre-season! I've also heard of a few recruits but nothing of anybody leaving as yet, but looking forward to being competetive in D3 2011. The club last featured in D3 around 7 years ago so theres an expectation to stay afloat up here.

Another gimmick form Prahran. First it was State Bank, then southbank then Prahran to leveridge off their history, they tried to link with several schools in the area and now Assumption. Whats next-the salvos?

Can't you just see the gun Assumption kids coming down to play D3!

Just like the St Pats link has done nothing to help NOBS to move up the grades, neither will this.

I hope for their sake I am wrong but it smacks of clutching at straws for mine.

They'd only need a couple at D3 level, they're already premiership favourites....it may help them more if they can get back to the higher grades. If they're in C or B it may convince a lot of them to play there rather than Old Xavs or DLS

Yeh your right.

IT is working a treat for Nobs , who in a higher grade have an official link with St Pats Ballarat( an absolute football factory) and hasn't it rocketed it them up the grades . IT has been fours years now and no promotion.

Lets remember, they are only a grade away from C grade Prharan are way off

Early days I know but I just can’t see this working. So many of the Assumption kids are from country Vic & NSW. If they come to Melbourne for study it is likely they would play for one of the many Uni teams, some of which are in the higher grades. No doubt Assumption is a strong footy school but would the quality players want to play at D3? Perhaps someone for Ivanhoe can shed some light on why that partnership never really got going and eventually dissolved. Prahran might be better forging closer links with their juniors or really trying to tap into their local area.

And for what it's worth while there have been a handful of Assumption kids at De La over the years there are none presently to my knowledge.

The thing going against Prahran is they are in the heart of Melbourne's exclusive private school area. There are umpteen clubs around Prahan, within a 5km radius, giving kids so many options other than them and their position in the VAFA is hurting them. Hell, we at Bentleigh were treating the game this year as being "local"

I agree with what Rooster said above, they need to nuture their juniors through & hang onto them..

Inner city location at Toorak Park will help as opposed to NOB's & Ivanhoe.
Playing half the games in Assumption colours will also help.

The problem with NOB's & Ivanhoe is that they were joint clubs. Guy's need to really beleive that this is the ACKOC team. No one thought that with Ivanhoe, and NOB's is still NOB's to most people in VAFA circles.

It may not get them to Premier, but I think it'll help stabalise the club around Div 1

It's tough to hang onto ACC & AGS already but it's nearly impossible to hang onto APS kids as school sport is so highly regarded, and on a Saturday, so they have to play on the weekend for school and leave the club system, leaving them clubless when they finish school, so will normally head to the OB club

Interesting comments, but I think it is pertinent to set the record straight as to what Prahran Assumption Football Club is about.

The Prahran Assumption Football Club is a joint venture, and has the full support of Assumption College Kilmore and the Assumption College Kilmore Old Collegians Association, as well as the support of both the Prahran Senior and Prahran Junior Football Clubs.

The difficulty Prahran Football Club has always faced in the Amateurs is the pull of the Old Schol Tie from our strong junior football club, which has led to difficulty in recruiting players who have worn the Two Blues jumper as kids.

As a result, we have always maintained a strong link with a number of country areas for our recruiting with at least 50% of our players coming from country Victoria.

This makes the match with Assumption even more compelling, with PFC having been a haven for many country footballers who have moved to the city in the past.

The new Club presents Assumption College an opportunity to gain a presence in the VAFA, with great facilities, in close proximity to the city and the response from many former players, including high profile ones, has already been extremely positive despite being in D3.

Had ACK started its own side, it would have been in D4 anyway, and this group of young men are particularly passionate about making Prahran Assumption a viable, ongoing entity.

The presence of an existing football club that has endured some tough years but has a relatively young and talented list save for a couple of veterans will only serve to accelerate the success of the new Club.

I can assure you this venture is no gimmick, and the expectation is that this combination of two very proud football clubs will emerge over the coming years as a far stronger version of anything presented in the last 10 years by Prahran Football Club or in the history of Assumption in the Amateurs.

There are plenty of reasons for any ACK Old Collegians to get on board, as it's time the football nursery had an impact on the VAFA scene and the platform has now been set after three years of hard work to get themselves a presence.

Couple that with a powerful existing structure off field in the Prahran Football Club and there are plenty of positive forces combining to ensure the Prahran Assumption Football Club will be a success going forward.

So happy for you all to have your opinions, but those working on making this football club a success are confident this will work, and Prahran Assumption Football Club has an extremely bright and exciting future.

Yep..Nobs said all the same things four years ago about their St Pats merger. How would you say that has gone? They are still in D1. Intersting you make no refeernce to them.

Absolutley delusional if you think that quality young ACK players will come and play D3!

A desperate gimmick from a desperate club.

Have Assumption been told about the pre game strippers?

Having seen them in action, some of the ACK school 1st XVIII would towel up a lot of players in D1 (until they got crunched and sat on). How many D3 players do you know who can kick a drop punt through at half post height from 65m on the wing? I watched it happen last year. If some of those kids come down, watch out in the U19s and seniors.

Poke fun all you want, it will be interesting to review these comments in July or so...

No one is questioning the talents of the school. Their record of success is testament to that. Mind you they do battle until the later years when they get an influx of country boarders. But like the talented players from every school, town or suburb they find their own level. Many of those of which you speak will end up in the VFL or top grades of county or suburban leagues. As previously mentioned a good number of Assumption kids are country boys who don’t all up in the Melbourne.

Having been through the process previously and it not being the success we had hoped - all I can say it that we wish the new venture well.

Some of the reasons that it did not work for us:

Best talent was attracted to:

* A or B grade football clubs - more so than D grade. Fair enough - if football 'standard' is your key reason for playing each year.

* Some were recruited to Kilmore Football club and other local clubs.

* Some were recruited to Calder Cannons

* Some returned home to country clubs.

At that point in time we had some issues with past ACK players who had played for money - being allowed to play VAFA football. The current guidelines have become more relaxed in regards to 'past payments'.

The school was not fully supportive of the concept - but the football department was. It was Father Ray Carroll that helped support the initial opportunity and was very supportive of the Ivanhoe/Assumption FC concept.

At that particular time our club struggled to support the kids coming through with any accommodation or work opportunities ( full or part-time), so the option of playing with us was less attractive.

That being said we have had some wonderful players and people from ACK come and play with us - and who remain at our club still - from the initial merger.

If Prahran AFC have the ability to drive the partnership and it has the backing of the school - then it could well be a success.

As for the Hoes - we have gone down a different path now with the local junior club and that works better for our set of circumstances.

Good luck to Prahran and ACK - look forward to seeing you this year.

Chump.

Ron, a little harsh there but bordering on the truth. I can't see why any first 18 or 2nd 18 Assumption lads would want to play in Division 6 of the VAFA, most will go A or B without a doubt. I can't see this doing anything to stop the slide of the Two Blues.
As far as the announcement goes, perhaps some funding finally for the redevelopment of Elsternwick Park?
