Take into account the fact that UHS-VU is associated with Flemington Juniors in the WRFL and so every season there will be a large chunk of players transferring to the club as they progress from Under 16s to Under 18s.

I didn't realise they were mostly under 18 players. Only looking at the clearances I thought there was a lot. Well that changes a few things but they still must be doing ok to have a nice win over Elsternwick.

I have a simple philosophy on the umpires:

They're going to make mistakes, and that's fine.

I'm playing D3 footy. I make mistakes. Sometimes I drop a mark I should take, or let a tackle slip, or miss an easy shot at goal. This happens (sadly) all too regularly: pretty much every game I make at least a couple of errors. If I made fewer errors I'd probably be playing at a higher level, but I don't, and I'm not.

Not once has an umpire abused me for making an error, no matter how obvious the error was or how simple it would have been to get right, not even if my error might have been the difference between my team winning or losing a game.
Nor do I expect the umpires would abuse me for making an error. They know I wasn't trying to stuff up, I was doing my best.

So I figure once an umpire starts abusing me for my mistakes, or once I play a flawless game with not one error, then I might be justified in getting stuck into an umpire when he makes a mistake. Maybe...

Until then I'll keep my mouth shut, do my best as a player, and leave them to do their best as umpires.

Umpires shoudl be seen and not heard. The issue is not them making mistakes, the issue is when umpires see themselves policing the game and go looking for free kicks. They are there to protect players. And at he end of the day they get paid. I play D3 footy and I dont get paid.........I have also been heckled by numerous umpires in D3

"They are there to protect players"

It's amazing how often umpires at this level forget that's what they're paid to do.They seem to a lot of time arguing their bad decisions then paying attention to the game.Umpiring is not as hard as they would like you to think.

If they can't get this right then they should give it up. Too many illeagal hits get let go by D3 uimpires, which usually start spot fires in a game.

Anyway back to the footy, my tips for this week are:

Elsternwick to bounce back at home against Kew by 9 goals.
Despite Uni's big opening win, the Hoes to get home by 24pts
Powerhouse over west Brunswick by 36pts
Hawthorn at home over Yarra by 15pts
Mt Lilydale to down Albert Park by 2 goals.
Prahran over the Gryphs by 5 goals.

UHS-VU v Elsternwick - 23 points.
Yarra Valley v Prahran Assumption - 57 points.
Monash Gryphons v Hawthorn - 9 points.
Mt Lilydale v Ivanhoe - 20 points.
Powerhouse v Albert Park - 6 points.
Kew v West Brunswick - 16 points.

Progressive 6 from 6.

Tipped all the right teams. The scores could do with a bit of work. Pretty close with Rams v Hoes and Gryphs v Hawks. So much for my rubbish post about Elsternwick being slow starters...

Elsternwick v Kew - 53 points. Wickers only had the one Grace in last game but think they are still way to strong for a hapless Bears. Kew look like they are lacking talent and depth and wont get close here on the postage stamp. Elsterwick love playing at home and use the ground well. Will there be some big scores from Wickers goal kickers from last week Hunter and Thornton? I hope so.

Ivanhoe v UHS-VU - 12 points. I think this is match of the round and will help define how this season is shaping up for the rest of the teams. A few regular names in the best so not sure what the new recruits are like at UHS. Watts to be the deciding factor to add a couple more goals to his tally.

West Brunswick v Powerhouse - 48 points. No Pike to be seen. Is this the best or worst rumour to get around over Summer? Powerhouse way too strong an outfit and will be difficult to beat all year. Burnside looks to be continuing his good form and will dominate this week. From all accounts Webb is a handy pick up and may help Powerhouse take the next step.

Hawthorn v Yarra Valley - 14 points. Hawthorn are a very well drilled and coached team. They flood and zone very well. Playing on their home turf will be hard to beat but I fear YV will be too strong. They had a good showing against the tipsters favourites last week. If the likes of Yeo and the Trend boys can play consistant with new comer Collie to support they will get over the line here.

Albert Park v Mt Lilydale - 22 points. MtL seem to be missing their avenues to goal last week but if they can fix this up, will win this game. They need the Roberts boys to fire. Will any MtL confirm if Rodwell is playing this year or whether his shoulder is gone?

Prahran Assumption v Monash Gryphons - 18 points. Gryphs might have earned some respect last week and Prahran came back to the fold from the lofty preseason hype. But I think there were 2 grades between these teams not long ago and Prahrans class should show through. Will be a tight game and with the likes of Sleight to win a game as shown last week, this will be the difference. The Mackies to do well for the Gryphs.

Thoughts for ROUND 2.

Elsternwick vs Kew
Ivanhoe vs UHS-VU
West Brunswick vs Power House
Hawthorn vs Yarra Valley
Albert Park vs Mt Lilydale
Prahran vs Monash Gympions

Hard to get a straight answer out of the "flying doormat". From what i am told surgery is still a possibility.

Progress 5 out of 6

Tips for Round 2

Elsternwick V Kew Elsternwick by 20 points
Ivanhoe V Uni High Ivanhoe by 18 points
West Brunswick V Powerhouse Powerhouse by 40 points
Hawthorn V Yarra V Hawthorn by 10 points
Albert Park v Mount Lilyday Albert Park by 8 points
Prahran V Monash Gryphons Prahran by 28 points.

Round 1 Review (5/6)

UHS-VU by 24 Pts over Wicks (I’m sure Nicho and Boycey expected me to be one of the last to sing their praises, but I just get the feeling that the men from Brens are going to be jolly hard to beat, especially at home).
Prahran over Yarra Valley by 8 Pts (Know little from either camp, but the fact remains that boys from Orrong were more than competitive in Div 2 last season and will be keen to bounce straight back into that grade. Don’t expect it to be easy though).
Gryphs over Hawks by 21 Pts (Expect these two arch rivals to be evenly matched in 2011, however the Hawks have always struggled at East Caulfield and the unfurling of two premiership pennants might be just the tonic Monash require to continue this trend).
Mountain Men over the Hoes by 31 Pts (If anything, the Rams were unlucky not to snare the D4 premiership, and they remained unbeaten at home all year. I can think of no reason for this bias to be discontinued. Lilydale comfortably).
House over AP by 45 Pts (Expect a fine showing from the House early on as they try to atone for a slightly disappointing end to 2010).
West over Kew by 3 Pts (Basically have no idea in this one. I do not expect either of these teams to figure prominently, but suspect Brunswick boys will be tougher at the footy).

The Rams capitulation in front of their home faithful was my only blight in a round (where others have already mentioned) of few surprises 5/6. I will go as far as saying that the Hoes win at Mercy College was the most impressive performance today. Sure Lilydale were missing some of their strike-power – If Rodwell was fit what on earth was he doing in the two’s? – but to relinquish a three goal half time lead will have Greg Finkemeyer seething. Something that certainly wouldn’t have happened last season and pressure that the Rams will have to get used to – constant harassment of the ball carrier – in this division. For Ivanhoe, the form of Julian ‘Dutchy’ Holland in front of the sticks was particularly pleasing as was the game of Ben Plowman. Other games went largely to script and I agree have probably resulted in more questions than answers. Uni High, West Brunswick and The House were impressive, but how good were their respective oppositions? The Two Blues showed great resolve to hold out Yarra Valley in a high quality game. I expect both these sides to fair well this season, but how well it yet to be revealed. The Gryphons could’ve put Hawthorn out of the contest by three quarter time had they converted more of their opportunities. A poor conversion rate was an issue for Monash in 2010, and they won’t be able to conquer all in this grade with a similar execution. The jury is still out for both these sides…

Round 2 Preview

Wicks over Kew by 18 Pts (It has been a commonly held belief for the last decade, shut down the Mahony boys and you shut down Elsternwick. It was no surprise to see that neither Craig nor Brian featured last week and therefore the Wicks were comfortably accounted for. Kew will be looking to continue this poor start for the home side but can’t it happening at EP2)
Hoes over UHS by 6 Pts (There are at least four games I can see going either way and this is the first of them. Uni High are certainly a club on the up with links to Victoria University and Flemington Juniors in recent times, however, this is just the kind of game they have dropped over the years. Ivanhoe will make them accountable for every possession and might just have better conversion in front of the sticks if Holland continues to fire. Hoes just).
House over Westies by 24 Pts (All reports from Ross Gregory have been glowing in relation to Powerhouse’s performance last Saturday, but the fact remains is that they were jumped by Albert Park early and only hit top gear in the second half, due to Burnside’s dominance. The Magpies may not have beat much in the eyes of many, but that is grossly unfair on the Bears as Truslove’s men played with a confidence unseen for much of 2010. I give them an outside chance, but class should prevail).
Hawks over YV by 2 Pts (I defy anyone to split these two first round losers as we simply don’t know how good their opponents were. Based on this I can only split them by a whisker and will err on the side of caution and side with the home team. Toby “Leonard” Cohen to be amongst the Hawks best.
Falcons over the Rams by 3 Pts (See the review of the Hawks/Yarra Valley game. I simply have no idea in this one and will side with Albert Park. Both sides let leads slip last week. Anthony Lewis to continue his good form).
Blues over Gryphons by 12 Pts (Monash are going for 11 straight senior wins, but one things they will meet their Waterloo at Toorak Park. The Gryphs now have a second Mackie starring with Todd joining brother Clint at ECR, however, I think the likes of Josh Chapman and Jimmy Musster would prove too much. Will be an entertaining contest no doubt).

Good luck to all

Whoever writes the notes for D3 in the record and was asking "where is glen francis?"... please see my earlier post. Barel Francis is enjoying some pre season warmth in mexico to prepare himself for a big year ahead. He will be back round 3. 2 games missed won't effect his chance of league BnF, he;s a 3 vote impact type player.

Hoes by a z23 goals at home this week in a tight one.

Very quiet down here since Saturday games..... Congrats to Kew who notched up their first win! Not many tipsters on here gave them a chance but a lazy 8 from Brazelle and keeping the wicks to 1 point in the last!!

Worrying times for Hawthorn and Mt Lillydale who were easily accounted for!

Prahran did what most thought but looks like a close game until half time, Monash seem like they have handled the jump reasonablly and should give a few this year a worry!

Then 2 close games with UHS and WB causing an upset! What happened during the week at Power House? Maybe now Pike will come to play, ha!

Good to see some accurate goal kicking across the comp though especially with such focus on the AFL last year and poor kicking!

Looking forward to more answers after the Easter break and round 3!

Seen quite a few sides now. Certainly no standouts but have yet to cast a discerning eye on Prahran, Yarra Valley or the Gryphons yet.

Uni High always had something in hand over the Hoes on saturday and looked reasonably sharp.

We were a little disappointing but having said that, there are a lot of fundamentals we can improve on and our side on Saturday was very young and are on a steep learning curve.

A couple of more experience heads back in the coming weeks but hard to know where we stand.

Uni High run the ball okay and will be around the mark.

Went to the Prahran/Gryphons game and saw a lively match. Both defences played well although Prahran had a couple of better marking options up forward who will create headaches for opposition defences, and some lively crumbers.
Fairly even game to 1/2 time but then blew the Gryphons away with an 8 goal 3rd quarter and took the pedal off in the last.
Too early for predictions really but I'd say that Prahran will be contenders and Gryphons will need to find another gear if they're to trouble other top sides.
From the weekend results I'd also say that Hawthorn may have a long drive home from Kilmore in 2 weeks time.

Progress 5 out of 6

Tips for Round 2

Elsternwick V Kew Elsternwick by 20 points
Ivanhoe V Uni High Ivanhoe by 18 points
West Brunswick V Powerhouse Powerhouse by 40 points
Hawthorn V Yarra V Hawthorn by 10 points
Albert Park v Mount Lilyday Albert Park by 8 points
Prahran V Monash Gryphons Prahran by 28 points.

Tips for Round 3

Progress 7 out of 12. Only tipped 2 last week.

Prahran v Hawthorn Prahran by 55 points
Monash Gryphons V Albert Park Monash by 22 points
Elsternwick v Mt Lilydale Elsternwick by 10 points
West Brunswick v UHS UHS 20 points
Power House V Ivanhoe Power House 15 points
Kew v Yarra Valley Yarra Valley 58 points

Round 3
Disturbing loss at home last week for the Hawks. Prahran to whop the them by ten goals and put one hand on the cup.

Gryphs v Albert Park. Tough one to call. Maunder to get AP home in a thriller by 2 pts.

Elsternwick v Mt Lilydale-The Mount didn't travel well last week and see no reason this week. Elsternwick by 3 goals.

Brunny v Uni High-Huge win for Brunny and uni High was far more impressive last week than in week one. Gorringe to continue his good form. Uni by 40 pts.

Powerhouse v Ivanhoe-Hoes young brigade made many fundamental errors last week that are easily corrected. Expect improvement as the year progresses and as some key players return. The House will bounce back at home but I'll go with the heart. the Hoes by 1 pt.

Kew v Yarra Valley. Kew had a great win last week against Elsternwick and have clearly been undersold but they will have a test this week against the side that is setting itself up as the main challenger to be runners up-Yarra by 30 pts.

The picture will be a little clearer again come 5pm Saturday.

Apparently Glen Francis is back in the country. not sure how many tacho's he ate or how much Carona he drank, but I'd be slotting him straight in to match it with the big bodies of Power Grouse.

Progressive 6 from 6.

Elsternwick v Kew - 53 points.
Ivanhoe v UHS-VU - 12 points.
West Brunswick v Powerhouse - 48 points.
Hawthorn v Yarra Valley - 14 points.
Albert Park v Mt Lilydale - 22 points.
Prahran Assumption v Monash Gryphons - 18 points.

Progressive 9 from 12.

Poor tipping last round has hurt my good start. A few upsets popped up and I think opens the way for a very interesting season. Doesn't make this weeks tipping any easier.

Prahran Assumption v Hawthorn - 56 points. I think Hawthorn are actually closer to Assumption than Prahran is, so I'm not really sure who this will suit. Won't matter much as this top v bottom contest should play out as expected. Prahran are well coached and can quickly turn it on as shown in the 3rd quarter last round. Parsons is a quality player who can kick goals when necessary and will continue his good form this week.

Monash Gryphons v Albert Park - 16 points. Been awhile since these two teams clashed but they have had a bit of history. The Falcons haven't been able to build on there half decent form of last year and I think the Gryphs will want to atone from last round. Pocock from the Gryphs to stand up a kick 5 goals.

Elsternwick v Mt Lilydale - 4 points. Tough game to tip. Neither team has started very well. I said round 1 that the Wicks were slow starters and think they will start hitting their straps soon. Also playing on the postage stamp will suit them. If they have the defence to cut out Roberts they will get away with the points... but I'm not so sure they can stop him.

West Brunswick v UHS-VU - 24 points. Match of the round with top of the table battle. How much respect you give these teams is yet to be determined but you would say the Pies have a little more after a spirited win over Power House. While a couple of good wins for UHS if they are going to be contenders they needed to win those games, so let's see if they can earn more respect here. Both teams share the goals around but the Pies will win this with better options up forward with Cimera and Melican.

Power House v Ivanhoe - 35 points. I liked House early and they will be smarting after last rounds loss. Will come out strong and having Rombotis with a game under his belt should help lift them. Edwards(How many games is he on now? been playing for ever) to carrying on kicking bags each week will also help beat a competitive but middle of the road Ivanhoe.

Kew v Yarra Valley - 61 points. Kew may have surprised a few people last week but suggest YV will be too good here. Trend is showing good form winning the ball himself and not only sharing with the forwards but snagging a few himself. If Kew are to get close they need Brazza to kick another 8 but it wont happen. I haven't seen YV yet but from what I've heard they are just too strong winning the ball around the packs.
