Can anyone tell me how crowd levels were for round 1? I ask as I was at Frankston V Crib Point on the weekend and an old teammate was chatting to me about the no alcohol policy at VAFA games and how it brings the crowd down or how people sit in their cars and drink anyway (which in turn causes lower revenue). Frankston and Cribby don't usually pull large crowds at a guess I would have said there was around 400 there excluding players umpires and officials. Now each of those 400 paid $10 entry which I was happy to do as it goes straight to the club and not to the league. I am by no means a drinker but it was nice to sit there with a few mates and have a can of VB and a hot roast beef roll and enjoy the footy, not one person there was offensive to the umpires because they had a few under their belt. Coupled with the fact they have the netball going on next to the footy oval, it really was the "community" football that the VAFA are going for, despite having the alcohol there. I know most clubs in the lower levels could do with $4000 a game coming straight from the gate, 9 homes a year and that's about $36,000 you didn't have to work very hard for. I know Big Waz has said before the world doesn't have to revolve around drinking, it doesn't. But I tell you what, it was real good to sit there and have a beer bought from the club and watch some good footy.
Maybe its time the VAFA take a look at their antiquated rules.

dont agree with charging people to get in but would love to have a beer sitting on the hill watching the seniors

just to play devils advocate, what are you going to do with an extra 36k a year if you're not spending it on players? Surely thats when things start to get messy.
Separately, good on the south mornington 2's for sticking around, they've had a rough trot since promotion and are still sticking it out.

Last year RC beat La Trobe by 1 point out on their ground... Should be another good game... I suspect they've improved from last season.

Plenty can be spent on with that kind of money. That kind of money can keep fees down for players, new jumpers, new balls instead of having to use the water logged ones, help with upgrading facilities that are in dire need of upgrading. help to pay for new lighting so you can see the whole ground and not be confined to one tiny overused bare patch of dirt that used to be grass, can pay for countless things. New showers, ridiculously high VAFA fees. Better canteen facilities, a working siren, a good scoreboard. better goal pads. better change rooms, better club rooms.

Keeping subs down would be a massive benefit, you'd be surprised how many blokes baulk at paying $300 for the season.
Large subs to play 2s footy and travel a long way every second week... would be a very big factor for a lot of south mornington prospectives ...

Exactly, I know they have juniors but when those guys get to senior age, a lot of the ones who are good enough are generally going to play for a club who can pay them a bit and whose away games aren't in Werribee or Brunswick.

Interested to hear if any clubs have gone the slacks approach for 2014? And if so, has their performance improved in line with the wearing of the slacks? I suspect there is a direct link between the two.

very interesting question it seemed to work for yv a couple of years ago, i think the vafa should bring it in as a rule just like its no drinking policy

Not so sure. Yarra valley wore the slacks. Elsternwick last year. Did Kew also go formal?

I think it's fairly ridiculous. Who wants to wear slacks on the weekend? I would prefer the rip off track suit ala the globetrotters. Or badass bandanas or something.

Down at RC we prefer our players not to show up sporting a hangover.

Tend to agree.

On a side note, how are my old mates Mark Ferris & James Coyne fitting in bigwaz? I'm sure the fun, frivolity, jocularity & high jinks have increased since their arrival to Centrals

I don't think I've met Mark yet... Have met James... He's a superstar.

South Mornington should be removed from the competition IMO, at the very least the ressies. If thats their performance standard for the season it is unfair to the competition. to give a team a percentage of 16k is a joke and it will warp the ladder. I would be spewin if I came up against them on a waterlogged day at their shit mid winter ground and didn't get to score the 300

Wearing slacks is very cliched in my opinion. It's like "hey look at us, we're professional, look at our culture"

Makes no difference to on field results. Think dfgh was taking the piss

no its a scientific fact if you wear slacks your will be good at football, i mean it must why else you would do it other than look like a total wank with 21 other blokes

Be careful... If your club decides to bring in a performance manager, you may just be donning the pressed pleats yourself.

an undermanned side is always going to get smashed. Just win more games and then % means dick all

Still too early to tell who is the favourite. Seems you could throw a blanket over the top 6 on the ladder.

The NB/EP result was interesting. EP are better than advertised.

La Trobe have a lot of depth, but lack a bit of size in the seniors. I like playing them, but gosh I hate that ground.
