I don’t think anyone is arguing that they would rather have Top 4 finishes instead of Grand Finals. The reason Top 4 is repeatedly brought up is that it is a good gauge for measuring consistency. I think the fact that we have never made the Top 4 under Bevo is something that should absolutely be criticised.

I’m not saying posters are, I’m saying that across the history of our game, no one gives a f**k about Top 4 finishes when there’s Grand Finals to play off in and Premierships to win.

Making finals 6 of 8 years is also a pretty good measurement of consistency I would assume also?

Top 4 finishes in the Home and Away season also greatly enhance your prospects of making a prelim and then grand final.

As does consistently making finals. This gets shit on though because of our win loss record once there.

Applying the same to Top 4 finishes, do they also get shit on if you don’t win those finals and ultimately Premierships???

Final H&A season finishes are irrelevant if you don’t make the GF or win a flag. We’ve made 2 and won 1.

Do you think we’d be discussing top 4 finishes if we’d won a second flag in 2021?

I’ve denied it for years but lately I’ve been pondering whether 2016 was a fluke after all.

I’m thinking it was not so much a fluke as a happy alignment of several factors:

• new coach bounce/new message/new motivation
• new coach’s innovations (handball club, third man up, etc)
• enough of the quality old guard still around (Moz, MBoyd, Wood, Murphy, Picken)
• alignment of peak years of some players who in some cases had just a brief period of stardom (Clay, Hunter, JJ, Stringer, TBoyd, Libba, Macrae, McLean, etc)
• arrival of a fearless new guard who hadn’t yet learned the underdog mentality (Bont, Dunkley, Daniel etc)

The fact that we still managed to make a GF 5 years later also suggests that 2016 wasn’t a fluke.

However we failed to adapt as well as others to rule changes like No third man up, 6-6-6, and statue-on-the-mark (we retreated 5m for more than a full season).

The game has changed. In 2016 we were innovators and others (most notably Richmond) copied us. Now we are at the trailing edge. We can’t readily copy or even defend against the Collingwood or Port Adelaide attractive style of play because we lack the right type of player. It’s only partly the list quality - it’s as much the poor list balance in critical areas.

Yes I’d love to see what a new coach could do with this list but the problem (and therefore the solution) is not simply and exclusively a coaching one.

The good news is that it might only take the insertion of 4-5 players to get the balance almost right and that 2-3 of them might already be on our list.

I do think we are ready for some fresh ideas at the top and the time is probably right.

However I’m having a bob each way - if we got the balance right we could still go a fair way with Bevo and some quality assistants. The net result of our list changes in the off season is going to be crucial.

Lord help us if we have to play Essendon in the finals again...

Was it under Eade we had a Storm guy come in to improve our tackling technique? Not sure NRL tackling techniques are the best option these days - maybe get Liber senior and his wrestling twin brother to run a master class?!

A bit late to the party on this one but that presser from Bev was eye-opening, genuinely really really bad and a fair indicator that he’s cooked.

“Is it because as a collective we’re not doing something together, or has there been a couple of individual moments that have cost the team? And it was the latter.

“One or two boys who just didn’t have good nights and we fed them some easy goals that we didn’t get from them.”

A couple of individual moments? You’ve got to be kidding me, I’ll accept that if it was a once off but when there’s a 2 season trend of this happening almost weekly, yeah mate I think it’s fundamentally wrong.

Blokes in full blown denial mode at this stage, concerning. Hopefully we can make some big decisions before the rot really sets in, because it is well & truly all downhill from here unfortunately.

It’s a good point. A mostly young list in 2015-16 had licence to take the game on. No fear and no house-of-cards game plan. In those years they were bold and confident, withstood pressure, were fun to watch and as supporters we had an ever-growing level of confidence that they would come through.

Fast forward to 2022-23. It’s a very different feeling and a very different side to watch. Their record against most top sides - and against some talented but erratic sides like GCS - suggests that performance plummets as the pressure gauge increases.

As argued earlier, let’s keep it simple. Get back to basics and attractive attacking football.

Just one observation about your post… how much authority does Bains have in this area? As an executive employee he can no doubt advise and be consulted, but if Grant (a board appointee, surely) is not doing his job I think the people who need to step in are the President and/or the Board. Not the CEO.

If Bev does stay on in 2024, the only way I’m happy is if we have a massive shake up of the remaining coaching panel, probably minimum 4 new hires and +2 in total number on the current staff.

I’d also want Bevo to have an extended break. Take two months and hopefully come back reinvigorated. He just looks tired these days

Maybe all coaches are on the same page and don’t believe they’ve warranted call up, or are ready for regular games, or even just think they aren’t doing what’s required in the 2’s? Face value tells us this is the likely scenario.

Just because some supporters believe certain things. Doesn’t mean everyone at the club besides Bevo believes them also and apparently doesn’t speak up about it. Seems like a fair stretch to think that’s the case when we have absolutely no idea what’s going on within the club.

I have given Bev the benefit of the doubt because not sure about his assistant coaches and who chooses them BUT Bev is losing me slowly especially when he has not addressed conceding consecutive goals 4 plus so many times. This has now become the rule rather than the exception.
