Does anyone here just support "the game" and not a particular club?

I do think there are a lot of people out there (including lots on this site) who barrack against another team stronger than the one they purport to follow.
I follow Geelong if it is good for Hawthorn and I detest Geelong.

Thru the wonders of Foxtel, I attempt to watch every game of the round t some stage throughout the week. I love the EFC, but if they folded tomorrow, I believe I'd still do the same thing

I'm the same. I love the hawks and would never think of changing but if they suddenly were evicted from the competition, I would still support the sport because I just love the game too much.

Love the game but its Collingwood that increases my passion for it. Sometimes I do just sit back and enjoy a good game but not very rarely, in most non-Pies matches I watch I support the underdog. Unless it is Carlton, never support them...

Support the Lions way more than "the game" but happy to watch a non-Lions game because I enjoy watching the game. Since GC's inclusion I've been to a few non-Lions games and intend to go to more next year.

The ones who support "the game" more than their club are generally people who participate in code-war dick measuring contests.

When Melbourne started throwing games it became a little too painful to watch them. Years later... and they are now worse than ever.

Consequently, I just watch whatever team is playing on TV and only go to the football to watch teams my friends support.

I do tend to barrack a little- Geelong & Sydney recently, because they're both brilliant to watch and show a passion that has clearly vacated the team I picked.

I'm pretty much the opposite of this. I used to love the game and watch every game I could. I think I've lost my passion for the game over the last few years and only really still follow it because I love the Dons. Other than Essendon games these days I only watch finals or matches between two top teams.
pretty much the same. used to watch as much footy as i could but the game has changed too much for the worse. i know many many supporters like me used to love the game but would not watch it at all any more if not for their team.

I don't think you'll find one generation of supporters who would say "yeh, the game is better than when I was young"

I try to find a balance. I'll watch and attend games my club isn't involved in, and while I couldn't care less about the result, I do enjoy watching other players. And as Melbourne supporter, it's good to be reminded how the game can be played properly.

Well I do love our game and dont really have a favorite team but have loved watching the likes of Brisbane and Geelong over the past few years.

But there are a number of teams that I like to barrack against IE: North, Footscray, St Kilda Carlton and of course Collingwood so in a way I do get involved in a match.

My mate got drafted but it didn't work out so he now just follows footy. He watches a lot but doesn't support any team. He tried to get around Gold Coast but couldn't. He is starting to favour the swans though. Can't really blame him.

Did he follow a team before?

I watch the AFL League/Season with a lot of interest, because I love footy.
I can't really watch a game without getting involved.
I nominally support Freo and am sympathetic to West Coast.

But when it come to who I really support, who my real club is, that's the Claremont Tigers.
You'd have to understand that I grew up down the road from them and started supporting them before there was an AFL.

There's really no difference for me between my Claremont and someone elses Geelong, WCE, Hawthorn, Carlton or whatever.

Yes OP I feel you. I was a die hard eagles fan as a little kid, I remember my little town going crazy after the two grand final wins. But we moved out of Australia for many years and when I came back all the players I loved had retired, and I didnt feel much connection with the new eagles. I even tried supporting freo for a while but they don't really do it for me.

Aussie rules is still my favourite sport in the world so I watch whenever I can but but I don't really support a team. I choose which team im going for during the actual match.

Is it humanly possible to support the game but not a team? Bit like saying you support charity but don't give anything.

I guess. I love NBA but don't support a team. I like too many and can't choose one haha.

me.

i follow saints in darwin, family association from pretty much the start of the club.

i don't have an AFL (or SANFL or WAFL, or TFL) team, why would I. I have no ties into Melb, Syd, Bris, Adl or Perth. Some of the teams i have to refer to Google maps to find out where they supposedly come from and all of them are 4 hrs flying time from here. I have driven thru Geelong twice, to Torquay and back on the same day (they have played some mighty good footy in the past few years), Hawthorn is in melbourne somewhere, I went to DFO at Essendon airport once, should i follow them? My sister lived in North Melbourne with her army husband for a year? maybe them. A friend had a house in Richmond, I have cousins in Perth, they are ****wits (no offence perth people it's just them not a general thing), Adelaide airport has improved beyond measure.

No team has really tried up here, they come here because they are told too, need the money and generally both so i couldn't be bothered supporting them.

I'll follow the local kiddies in the AFL.

So i know what i'm looking at when i watch games, unlike some of the idiots here who think you need a team to follow to understand the game. I've probably played and seen more games live and on TV than most people on here. Even now i'm likely to watch 2, sometimes 3 and very occasionally 4 games a weekend of NTFL when you are watching nothing.

Even when Collingwood doesnt play I find myself picking a team that is playing in the game I am watching and will barrack for them.

I just struggle to sit back and watch a game of footy without going for one of the teams.

All sports are pretty meaningless if you don't care who wins. Ok, maybe once in a blue moon you might want to marvel at the skills involved, but then you may as well go the circus - and who goes to the circus every week?

The main interest in sport is the soap-opera around who wins, who's going well, who's falling behind - it's a journey.

Easily. Most sports I watch I don't have a favourite team, I merely watch it because I like the sport. Baseball, basketball, gridiron, soccer, rugby, cricket, the sports in the olympics, all of these sports don't really have a team I'm following. Afl is actually the exception to the rule, if anything.
